Either way, you know you're condemned. This is a version of Peter Pettigrew's joining the Dark Lord - what would make a loyal fellow to betray his friends? He was a Marauder; he must have been decent before his crimes soured everybody's memories of him. He must have had a motivation, and here's an idea of what it could have been.

If one drinks from a bottle marked 'Poison' it is almost certain to disagree with one, sooner or later.

But there is a bit of a catch for, you see, neither is anything without the others. The individual will starve in the woods while the collective survives. They are the four proverbial pieces to the proverbial puzzle, differently shaped but equal to the others in every way. There is no keystone for they are all keystones.
