Spoilers for DH. An alternate ending to Snape's story line, picking up where DH left off. Short one-shot.

When Snape can think of only one viable option to get an injured Hermione out of Voldemort's clutches, neither one of them is happy with the resulting situation.

Merlin, what a waste of time. If knowing the future were as easy as looking at leaves in a teacup... Eileen took the final sip, then held the cup in her left hand and swirled vigorously. Three times, clockwise, the way Professor Mopsus had taught them. She drained the dregs, put the cup back down on the saucer, and critically peered inside. It looked like...clumps of damp tea leaves.

Voldemort has been defeated, but for Severus Snape, the war isn't over yet. A farce of a trial leaves his reputation in ruins. Old enemies seeking revenge are out for blood. Bitter and disillusioned, he doesn't hold out much hope that anything will ever change. But just maybe, he doesn't have to stand alone this time....

Peter Pettigrew died a hero. Except he didn't. What would it have been like to find that out after more than a decade? There is a line in the books, that "one finger was all they returned to his mother." That is what spawned this story.

So what happened when Sirius told Severus about how to get past the Whomping Willow? And what happened once they got caught? "Dumbledore's eyes had lost their customary twinkle as he contemplated the three boys in front of him. Sirius Black sat rigidly, ramrod straight, holding on to the arms of the chair with white-knuckled hands, looking everywhere but into the eyes of the Headmaster. Next to him, his best friend James sat dejectedly, head in hands..."
