Through the Barrier

C.E. Ahlen

Story Summary:
Emily Williams is Swedish, basketball playing, sarcastic, and oh yes, magical. Sure, Emily knew that the Harry Potter books were realistic, but REAL? Boy, was she in for a huge surprise. When her family moves to England she just happens *coughRoncough* to fall through the barrier and to platform 9 3/4. She leaves for Hogwarts and meets all the usual characters, including some new ones, like the special Helen Shipley. Observe: No Mary-Sue-ing here! ;-)

Still to Cathy, but a huge thanks to my new beta; isla142!

"So, you're sister to Ron?"

"Gällersta school for witchcraft and wizardry..."

"James?" she whispered."

"Has anyone seen Trevor?"

"She looked up into a pair of cold grey eyes."

Chapter 2. On the train.

They all helped each other with their trunks and then they tried to find an empty compartment. They found one in the middle of the train and settled down.

"How long is it until the train leaves?" Harry asked Hermione.

"Three minutes and thirty-two seconds."

"Thanks."

"So, Emily," Ron said, "how come you're named Williams? That's not a very Swedish name, now is it?"

"No. You're right," Emily answered. "It isn't. But my fathers parents are from Yorkshire. My dad moved to Sweden when he met my mum."

"Do you have any brothers or sisters?" Harry asked. "I don't."

"I know," it slipped out of Emily.

"How do you know?" Harry said questioningly.

Damn! Not again! She wasn't supposed to know that stuff! Quick thinking. Quick thinking. Oh yes, of course!

"Doesn't everyone?" she said and pointed at her own forehead. "You're kind of famous, you know."

"Yeah, right. Well, do you have any brothers or sisters?"

"Oh, one brother and one sister. My sister is three and absolutely adorable. Her name is Annie. Then I've got a brother named Thomas. He's five years older than me."

"Is he, like, you know...," Ron didn't know where to continue.

"A wizard," Hermione said. "Ron wants to know if he's a wizard."

"Oh, no!" Emily laughed. "He's a muggle alright. My parents too. I'm a muggleborn."

"Me too," Hermione said and smiled. "But what about Annie? Is she magical?"

"Well.... I haven't thought of that really. But I guess not. At least not yet."

Suddenly a girl with red hair poked her head into the compartment.

"Oh, good. I found you," she said to Ron, Harry and Hermione. "Can I sit here with you guys? The only seats left is with the Creeveys, the first years, or the Slytherins."

"Sure," Hermione said, "come in."

"Oh," the girl said when she saw Emily. "I'm Ginny. Nice to meet you. What's your name?"

"Emily Williams. It's nice to meet you too, Ginny. So, you're Ron's sister?"

"Is it that obvious, huh?" Ginny said and fingered her hair. "But you've got it too I see," she continued with a meaning glance at Emily's red hair. "Is it real?"

"Completely," Emily said proudly. "And I love it. Have never thought of colouring it. You?"

"Me neither. So, how come you're on your way to Hogwarts?"

"She's a transfer student from Sweden," Ron said.

"I think she can talk for her self, Ron," Ginny said to him. "Which year are you in, Emily?".

"I'm in sixth year. Same as them." She nodded at the trio.

"Do any of you sweeties want some sweets?"

It was the lady with the sweet-trolley who asked.

"No thanks. I've brought sandwiches," Emily said.

"Me too," Hermione nodded. "Is it a muggleborn thing, or what?" She smiled.

"I'd like some," Ron said.

"So do I, but mum gave you our money, so you'll have to pay," Ginny told her brother. "Is that alright with you, brother dearest?"

"Yeah, right," Ron murmured.

"I'd like some sweets, please," Harry said and bought almost half of what was on the trolley.

"So Emily," Hermione said when the sweetlady had left, "what school were you in?"

"Um... Gällersta school for witchcraft and wizardry..."

"Really?" Hermione looked surprised. "I've never heard of that one. I've just heard of Stockholm's institute for young wizards and witches."

"Eh... It's a new school..."

"That's unusual... Well do you..."

Before Hermione could say anything more, the door to the compartment opened and a young woman with short black hair peaked in (Authors note: No Cathy, it isn't you, just your hair!).

"Hello. Could you kids please tell me wherethe prefect...."

She stopped in midsentence and starred at Harry. All colour drained from her face.

"James?" she whispered.

Harry got quickly at his feet's.

"No," he said fast. "I'm not James. I'm his son, Harry. Harry Potter. Did you know my father?"

"Of course, how silly of me." The woman laughed slightly. "Yes, I knew your father. Who didn't? He was very popular. Charming, handsome and an excellent Quidditch player. I knew your mother as well. We were in the same house and she was one of my best friends at school."

"Who are you?" Hermione asked.

"Oh, I'm sorry! I didn't tell you, did I? I'm Katie Shipley, your new Defence Against the Dark Arts professor."

"Welcome to Hogwarts, professor. I'm Hermione Granger and this is..."

"Has anyone seen Trevor?"

A tall, rather muscular, and quite handsome boy had appeared in the doorway behind professor Shipley.

"Neville?!" Hermione said in disbelieve. "I mean, WOW! What have you done?

"I've been doing some workout over the summer," Neville said and blushed. "Well, have you seen Trevor?"

"No, but...," Hermione lifted her wand. "Accio Trevor!"

The toad came flying over professor Shipley's head. Hermione grabbed it and gave it to Neville.

"Here you are." She turned to professor Shipley. " As I was saying before Neville came, this is Ron and Ginny Weasley, that's Emily Williams, you know Harry already, and of course... Neville Longbottom."

"Longbottom?" professor Shipley said curiously. "As in Frank and Alice Longbottom?"

"My parents," Neville said. "Did you know them?"

"I didn't know Frank that good, but I knew Alice very well. She was a friend of mine, but in Ravenclaw. Well, well, those days are gone. I'd better get going. Where do the prefects sit?"

"In the front," Ron said.

"Thank you. I'll see you around, then. Bye!"

And then she left.

"Wow," Ginny said after a while. "She was.. cool"

"Kind of," Emily replied and nodded.

"Yeah," Ron said and looked at the closed door. "Harry, pass me one of those chocolate frogs, will you?"

The rest of the ride, they all ate of Harry's sweets and talked about almost everything.

When there was only half an hour left on the journey, the group decided that it was time to change into their robes. Hermione and Ginny left the compartment to find somewhere to change. Emily, on the other hand, stayed.

"Aren't you going to change into your robes?" Ron asked.

Emily thought for a moment and then said; "Well, you see, I haven't gotten my Hogwarts robes yet. And the girls in my old school had to wear pink and yellow robes, and with my hair, that looks horrible. And besides, you all wear black, and can you imagine how it would look if I came with a pink and yellow robe, and red hair?"

"Oh," Ron blushed. "Well, would you mind to leave anyway, cause' Harry and I would like to change, and..."

"Sure. I need to go to the toilet anyway. Where are they?"

"In the back of the train," Harry said.

"Thanks."

Emily started to go towards the back. She was almost there when she rounded a corner and BANG! She hit someone and fell to the floor.

"Watch where you're going!" someone sneered coldly.

"Oh I'm terribly sorry!" Emily said and helped whoever it was to pick up it's things. "I guess I didn't look where I was going."

She looked up into a pair of cold grey eyes. He looked exactly like she had imagined. Though he was a bit older than she would have thought. It was, of course, Draco Malfoy.

"Weasley?" he said with a cold glare and a disgusted look.

"As a matter of fact, no. But you got the W right. Williams. Transfer student from Sweden."

"Oh." Draco dropped the disgusted look immediately and actually smiled to Emily instead. "Well, welcome to Hogwarts then. I hope you'll end up in Slytherin. I'm there, you know. What year are you in?"

"Sixth. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go to the toilet ."

Draco smiled pleasantly and bowed to Emily.

"I'll see you at the feast then." And then he left her.

Author notes: The usual: Review!!!!

And by the way, a little explination of the words Lucia and Luciatrain in the last chapter:

No offence, but I though everyone knew about the Swedish tradition of Lucia. It's on the 13 of December every year, and people dress in white long dresses, holding candles, and singing special songs. They walk in a line, mostly two and two, after a girl who is elected to be the "Lucia", (she is mostly blonde and very cute of some stupid reason, it doesn’t matter if she can not sing, humph...). She is called the Maiden of Light and have a crown of candles in her hair. The whole thing is called a "Luciatåg" or directly translated "Luciatrain." All of it is very beautiful. The reason? Umm..... don't know really.... I think it's because it's so cold and dark outside and the Lucia has as a "job" to bring light and happiness to peoples lives. If you have any more questions about it, don't hesitate to ask. My e-mail is in the top.
