A Witch's Goodbye

A long, long time ago...
But I can still remember
How freedom felt, all that while
When I knew if I had a chance
That I could hold my blood traitor stance
And maybe someone'd save me from this trial...

But the contrary made me shiver
When every Daily Prophet giver
Bore bad news--it was a misstep
And, it seems, it was our last step

I can't remember if I cried
When I read about how Snape had lied
But I knew that hope had been denied
The day Harry Potter died.

So bye-bye, who is left to defy?
We were ready but already
Unsteady hope has run dry.
The good wizards can't laugh, and a smile goes wry
And they say now that the end must be nigh
They say now the end must be nigh

Did you write the lies of love,
And did you give the Potter boy the shove,
When the Prophet told you so?
Did you believe Fudge had a goal,
When Dementors sucked out Crouch's soul,
And where did Dumbledore tell Snape to go?

Well, I knew at last the times were grim
When the Stone was stolen on a whim
You all granted your views
Merlin, that bludger left a bruise
I was a lowly first year Quidditch punk
With a Cleansweep five and a beat up trunk
But I knew we were out of luck
The day that Potter died.

I started sayin' ,
Bye-bye, who is left to defy?
We were ready but already
Unsteady hope has run dry.
The good wizards can't laugh, and a smile goes wry
And they say now that the end must be nigh
They say now the end must be nigh

Now for three years we've been attack prone
And the list of deaths grows past the known,
But four years before were truly key
When the Headmaster brought the Order into the scene,
With a portrait that could make the saintly scream
And the will to stop a killing spree

Oh, and while the Convict was safe and sound
The Dark One led his godson 'round
The Convict's life unearned
No body was returned

And while Nick provided death remarks
The godson's anger a fight did spark
But we were weeping in the dark
The day that Potter died.

We were saying,
Bye-bye, who is left to defy?
We were ready but already
Unsteady hope has run dry.
Good wizards can't laugh, and a smile goes wry
And they say now that the end must be nigh
Say now the end must be nigh

Summer swelter in a refugee's shelter
Dementor's vile spawn did welter
Problems deep and falling fast...
They landed hard upon my class.
The students tried to ignore press brass,
With the Headmaster's abilities at last surpassed.

Now the cave's dank air was stale perfume
And it was a Gryffindor's doom.
We all got up to take a glance,
And the fear of war enhanced
'Cause a powerful curse the Lion killed
To none did the twice traitor yield.
Now it seems our fates were sealed
The day that Potter died

We started saying,
Bye-bye, who is left to defy?
We were ready but already
Unsteady hope has run dry.
The good wizards can't laugh, and a smile goes wry
And they say now that the end must be nigh
They say now the end must be nigh

Oh, here we are all dying in disgrace
A formation now to be erased
With no way left to save our kin
So come on, Death be subtle, Death be quick
Death come make Tom Riddle sick
'Cause justice is a witch's only friend

Oh, and as I watched him in my rage
My hands were bound tight to a cage
No warlock born known in Hell
Could break that demon's spell.
And as the flares climbed high to warn the Light
And their leader came to cure our plight
I saw Riddle laughing with delight
The day that Potter died

He was saying,
Bye-bye, who is left to defy?
They were ready but already
Unsteady hope has run dry.
The good wizards can't laugh, and a smile goes wry
And they say now that the end must be nigh
They say now the end must be nigh

Themis prophesied the news,
And I asked her for some kinder views
But she just wept and turned away.
I went up to the Gryffindor floors
Where I'd heard students chatter years before
But the ghost there said the students couldn't stay

And in the streets: the squibs did scream,
And from open eyes, floods of tears did stream,
And not a word was left unspoken;
For we at last were broken
And the three witches I admired most:
Eutripe, Clio, and Thalia, the most
They caught the last carpet from their post
The day that Potter died

And they were singing,
Bye-bye, who is left to defy?
They were ready but already
Unsteady hope has run dry.
The good wizards can't laugh, and a smile goes wry
And they say now that the end must be nigh
They say now the end must be nigh

Bye-bye, who is left to defy?
They were ready but already
Unsteady hope has run dry.
The good wizards can't laugh, and a smile goes wry
And they say now that the end must be nigh
They say now the end must be nigh
