Chapter 1. My Arrival.
On September the twelfth, my father escorted me to the front doors of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
"You'll be welcomed, Morgan, with open arms," Father told me almost in a whisper. "You and that boy will achieve great things while you're here"
"Buy why father?" I asked, curiosity getting the best of me. "How is it I'm going to achieve great things? Who is this boy you speak so fondly of?"
"Harry Potter dear. He's the other chosen one. He'll help you along the road to greatness," he said; urgency noticeable in his voice. He opened the doors to this grand entrance hall and led me along huge corridors covered with beautiful paintings. But these paintings weren't like any other. The characters on them moved. I was amazed by this. I've never seen moving paintings before. This was all new to me. The amazement didn't stop there. As we got to another branch of corridors, I heard a strange sound coming from above. I looked up just in time to see a set of stairs moving to another corridor.
"Father, look at those stairs. They're moving!" I exclaimed. Father looked at me and smiled.
"Yes, it's quite interesting isn't it? I always loved watching the stairs move and I was always talking to the paintings-"
"You talked to the paintings? Father are you going nuts?" I asked him in an exasperated tone. He chuckled and turned to me.
"Hogwarts is full of wonderful and eye-popping things. You'll soon understand what it is I'm saying. Come now, we're going to be late."
We stopped in front of stone gargoyle. I looked up at father. He muttered "Canary Creams" and the gargoyle leapt aside to reveal a set of spiral stairs.
"Up here." he advised me. And up we went until we came to a stop in front of a huge oak door. He knocked and from a distance, beyond the door, I heard a muffled voice that said:
"Come in." Through the doors we went and in front of my eyes I saw a large room. It was elegant, and had many bookcases lining the walls. Behind a desk stood an old man. He had long white hair and a beard that almost reached the ground. His sparkling blue eyes shone bright behind the half moon spectacles. I assumed him to be the principle of the school. I mean, his office was so big. He had to be the head man on this turf.
"Headmaster, I would like you to meet my daughter, Morgan." father gave me a look that told me to greet the Headmaster.
"Hello sir." I responded in a confident voice.
"Hello Morgan. I'm so happy to meet you," he said quite cheerfully.
As I looked around the room, Father and the Headmaster spoke to each other.
"Do you have anyone to show her around? I'm unable to stay." Father asked.
"Yes, Harry Potter will be showing her around. He's an excellent student. I've just called for him to come up to my office. He'll be here anytime now." The headmaster explained. There was knock at the door.
"Yes, he's here now. Come in." he said.
Then, the door opened and in walked the most handsome guy I had ever seen. He was tall and had a broad chest and shoulders. Oh and his eyes! Goodness, they were like a pair of emeralds staring back at me. I caught myself staring too long and quickly looked back at the headmaster.
"Mr. Potter, I'd like you to meet Miss. Morgan Lennox. She's a newcomer to our school. I was wondering if you would be so kind as to show her around the castle. She'll be starting the term later today and will need to get acquainted with the grounds quite quickly. Are you up for the challenge?" the headmaster asked him. Harry smiled and nodded.
"Follow him Morgan. He'll show you around and hopefully introduce you to some people." The headmaster told me. I slowly walked over to him and extended my hand.
"Nice to meet you." I said to him and smiled. He grasped my hand firmly and shook it.
"Nice to meet you too." he said.
He headed out the door of the office and I followed him. He lead me down the spiral staircase and out through the gargoyle. He then began the little chit-chat.
"So um, how do you like it so far?" he asked me.
"It's pretty cool. This castle is beautiful." I responded.
"Yeah, it's huge too." he said.
After a while, Harry spoke again.
"Your accent, it's not from around here. Where'd you come from?" he asked.
"America" I responded. A look of pure shock spread across his face. "What?" I asked.
"Nothing, it's just that we don't get people from that far away. Why'd you come here?" Harry asked.
"I have no idea. Father said he came here as a student and he wanted me to also." I explained to him.
Harry took me all over the castle and grounds. It was a beautiful day. Perfect for a walk, with a hot guy.
"So, what's it like being here day after day. I mean, don't you find it hard to concentrate with all this scenery?" I asked.
"Personally, I love it here. As for the scenery, I'm hardly able to even look at it during the year. I'm so busy with schoolwork. But don't get discouraged. It isn't hard work. There's just so much of it." We began to walk back towards the castle.
When we got up to the castle, Harry opened the doors to a grand dining hall.
"This is the Great Hall where we eat. You can meet Ron and Hermione now. They're my best friends," he explained to me.
"Oh, cool. I can't wait to meet more people." I responded. He then led me over to a large table, second from the right, to where a red headed boy and brown bushy haired girl sat. I was so excited about meeting new people. I only hoped that they liked me.
"Hi Harry, where were you all day?" said the boy, I assumed to be Ron.
"Showing our new student around. Guys, this is Morgan Lennox. She'll be joining us in Gryffindor, I think. Morgan, were you ever told about what house you'd be in?" he asked me.
"Yeah, my father told me before we arrived that I'd be in Gryffindor." I said to him.
"Hi Morgan, it's nice to meet you. I'm Hermione Granger," she said to me in a welcoming voice.
"Hi, it's nice to meet you too." I said kindly. I looked over at the boy.
"Hi." was all Ron said.
We quietly ate lunch till the doors to the Great Hall opened. My father, accompanied by the Headmaster, walked in. The hall quieted down when they entered.
"Continue with your lunch." The Headmaster said.
Father spotted me and walked over to where I was sitting. He smiled politely as I introduced him to my new friends.
"Nice to meet you all. Morgan, I've got to be going. I had your uniform put in your dormitory already. The Headmaster has said that you'll be starting a class today. So I suggest that you dress in your uniform after you're through eating. Good luck sweet pea. I'll see you next June. Good bye." he then kissed my forehead and turned around and left. I watched as he left through the wooden doors to the Great Hall. Then I heard a mock soft voice sound above me.
"Ah, a new student. Why is a lady, such as yourself hanging around these losers?" the voice asked. As I turned around, I saw a blonde-haired boy with a pointed face. He was so ugly, I had to put him out of his misery. His pointed face and bleach blonde hair reminded me very much of a ferret. My least favorite animal.
"So I don't have to put up with ferret resembling idiots like you!" I said to him. I heard someone giggle lightly behind me.
"Go away, Malfoy." came Harry's voice.
"So, I see you've become friends with a mudblood lover, eh?" he said in his cold voice. At that moment, all sanity left me. No one called my friend a 'mudblood lover' and got away with it. I new enough about the British wizarding culture to understand the full meaning behind the term mudblood, And I hated anyone who used the word.
"Take that back now!" I said, standing up to show this Malfoy kid who he's messing with. I was taller than him by at least an inch, giving me a bit of power over him.
"Why should I? It's the truth you know." he said smiling evilly.
"I don't care if it's the truth or not. I don't like it when people say mean things to my friends, and I absolutely hate that word. Now take it back, or you'll regret it," I yelled at him. I could see out the corner of my eyes that people were looking at us. They seemed amused by this whole situation. But I didn't care. My mind was set on how to get rid of this creep.
"Is that a threat? Oh, I'm so scared" he taunted.
"No, it's a promise. Now get the hell out of here now, or I'll jinx you to Kingdom Come." I said as calmly as I could.
"I have to get my things ready for my next class." he said with a slight blush. He turned on his heel and left as quickly as he came. I turned to my friends and saw blank looks on their faces.
"What?" I asked.
"That was Draco Malfoy," said Ron.
"So? What's so important about him?" I asked. They still looked shocked.
"His family is known for being a part of the whole Dark Arts thing. We know for fact that Lucius, Draco's father, was in You-Know-Who's inner circle of worshippers. And Draco just happens to be our enemy. Since our first year in fact." said Hermione. I let the words of what Hermione had just said sink in. The Malfoys' are known for being right in that circle Father was talking about with Mother this morning. This must be bad. I've heard so much about the light and dark sides, but never in school. This is a definite change for me. I nodded my head to show that I heard her and decided to change the subject. I was interested in seeing my new room for the next two years.
"Anyway, mind showing me where I sleep? Father told me to change into my uniform after I was done eating and I have no idea where I should even begin to look for that dorm of ours. I mean, this school is just too big." I said and smiled.
"Here, I'll show you. I've got to go up to the Common Room anyways. I left my books up there." she said and led me up many steps to the entrance of the Gryffindor Common Room. A painting of a Fat Lady was what separated us from the room.
"Red Roses" Harry muttered and the painting swung open to reveal a well furnished room with couches and tables and an extremely large fireplace.
"Wow!" I breathed as I took in the sight before me. "This is absolutely beautiful. Are you sure this is the Common Room and not the Queens' room?" I asked. Hermione led me up to the dormitories.
"Here it is." Hermione said to me. I looked around in the dorm. There were five four-poster beds. I found mine easily. It was the only one with the curtain open and all parts to my uniform were on it. My blouse and skirt, my vest and socks. I walked over to it and picked them up. I spotted a dressing screen and walked over to it.
"I'll just get behind one of these to change. Mind if I ask a few questions?" I said to her.
"Sure, ask me anything." she said with a friendly tone.
"Well, there's a bell schedule right? What time do classes begin every morning?" I asked.
"Nine o'clock sharp. A bell rings every morning at seven, than again at seven thirty to make sure all of us are up. Breakfast is at eight."
"OK. What are the teachers like?"
"Well, Professor Snape, whom you're about to meet in a bit, he's horribly mean, but the other teachers aren't like that. He's the only one. For example, McGonagall who teaches Transfiguration is absolutely wonderful. She's my favorite professor. Binns is History of Magic. Quite boring if I do say so myself. Then Sprout, she's nice. She teaches Herbology. Lupin, he's my second favorite professor. He teaches Defense Against The Dark Arts. He is by far the coolest professor. Hagrid teaches Care of Magical Creatures and he's been my friend since my first year. Professor Flitwick is a goblin. What else is there to say about him eh? And I think that's it. See all the teachers aren't so bad. Only Snape." she said. After she was done talking, I came out from behind the dressing screen.
"How do I look?" I asked her.
"You look just like a Gryffindor. Come on, we're going to be late." she said. I followed her out the door and down into the Common Room.
"Finally, I thought you were going to be forever up there." said Ron. I smirked at him.
"If you want me to go back up there, I'll be glad to. I'm exhausted as it is." I said to him. He shrugged.
"All right, let's go to class. Don't want to be late, since it's Snape. He'd love an opportunity to give us a month's worth of detention." Harry suggested. So, we all got up and walked through this huge portrait and into the corridors. They led me down into the dungeons.
"Why does he hold his class in filthy dungeons?" I asked.
"Because this is where the Slytherin Common Room is and Professor Snape is head of that house." answered Hermione.
"Oh." I responded. Then, at last, we reached what seemed to be the classroom.
"Here we are" said Harry. It wasn't as bad as I thought, but still pretty filthy. They showed me to a table and we took out our books, and waited. I looked around the classroom and noticed a lot of people were looking at me. Some smiled welcomely, while others turned their noses up to me. I decided to concentrate on what was going on outside when suddenly the door burst open to the classroom. A tall, black and greasy haired man came thundering into the classroom.
"Turn to the page in your book that says how to make remedies. I want each of you to team up with a partner and make one. A semi-chubby boy sat cowering in his seat, wide eyed with fear, giving Professor Snape his undivided attention. From the looks of it, the boy thought that the Professor was going to do him in for something. I then looked at Snape and saw merciless eyes staring back at the boy. Harry caught my eye and I mouthed to him:
"Who's that boy"
"Neville Longbottom" was what he wrote on his piece of parchment. Then the Professor stopped in front of my table.
"And who might you be?" he asked.
"Morgan Lennox, I'm new" I responded. He advanced on me, standing right next to me.
"Oh yes that's right. This is Gryffindor today isn't it? The headmaster told me I should have a new student in my Gryffindor class today. I suggest that you don't work with Potter. He's very unreliable. A horrible potion maker might I add?" he said to me.
"Actually Professor Snape, I'd rather have Harry be my partner. He's not steered me wrong yet." I responded coolly. The professor narrowed his eyes at me.
"Well, that was not a request, it was an order. I want you to sit with Mr. Malfoy over here. He'll be of better help to you than Potter." He responded. "And for your lack of listening, ten points from Gryffindor and counting if you don't get to that seat within five seconds." I narrowed my eyes at him and got up to find my new seat. "Now get to work, everyone!"
"So, Miss. Mudblood lover, back for another visit. You'll be enjoying this one. I believe we never finished what you started in the Great Hall a few minuets ago. How about we end it now?" Malfoy sneered.
"As I recall, you were the one who walked over in the first place. So, naturally, you started it." I said to him coolly. He narrowed his eyes at me.
"Don't act all cool, you silly little Mudblood-"
"Mr. Malfoy, twenty points taken from Slytherin for you lack of self control towards a person. Anymore rude comments, and you'll have a detention." Professor Snape said. I was so happy about Malfoy getting points docked that I gave him an evil little smile and went back to my work.
"You're such a filthy, mudblood lover." he hissed at me.
"Shut up you creep!" I said to him. I looked up and saw that Snape was approaching our table.
"What is this nonsense?" he asked. "I thought I told you two to shut your mouths and work!"
"Well, I can't exactly work with someone who mutters under their breath to me!" I said a bit louder than I had wanted to.
"Well deal with it. But because the both of you decided to disobey my rules, how about a detention tonight?" he said so cruelly that I wanted to slap him. "You will appear in this classroom at eight o'clock sharp. Now, quietly get back to work. And if I hear one more peep out of any of you, you'll have detention for the rest of the week. Understood?"
"Yes." I said through gritted teeth.
"Yes." said Malfoy.
We both glared at each other for the rest of the class. But when I wasn't glaring at Malfoy, I was staring at Harry. He was so handsome. I only hoped that he wasn't taken. That he was single like me. I was just thinking about Harry and I holding hands through the corridors when Malfoy began to taunt me again.
"I see the way you're staring at Potter over there. You really should stop. Potions is a lot more interesting than that glasses-wearing freak," he said.
"I've been concentrating on potions for the last hour. Now shut up before Snape gives us another detention."
