BEEP, BEEP, BEEP...

Off went Hermione's alarm clock, at 8 AM, as usual. She got up, stretched, and then prepared for another day of the summer, which for her meant reading, surfing the net, and the occasional trip to the beach.

She drowsily walked to the shower, wishing for all the world that she could still be in bed, sleeping. But she had a schedule to stick to. Her parents were always on time; always harping at her if she was late. She knew another day had dawned, and there was no stopping it. School was fast approaching, and her parents were excited for another year. She, strangely enough, was not. Usually, she was excited about school. For her, school meant seeing her friends again, and learning new things. Unfortunately, this year was different. She was going to a separate school than her friends, Chelsea, Hannah, and Megan. For her, middle school spelled nightmare. For her, summer could never go on long enough.

But not even her sour mood could drown out the smell of her mum's homemade muffins. She hurried down the stairs and swung around the post at the bottom. "Good morning, sweetie!" her mother said cheerfully. Her dad had to leave early for the office, but her mum didn't work during the summer. Her mum handed her a muffin, sat down and began leafing through the mail. But neither of them suspected what was going to arrive in the mail this morning.

"Oh, you got a letter."

"Mmmph?" she replied through a mouth full of muffin.

Her mum handed it to her, and what stood out most to her was the fact that it was addressed to her bedroom, not to her house.

"Mum?"

"Hmm?"

"Why is this addressed to my bedroom?"

"What?"

Her mum quickly reached over and snatched it from her. Her lips moved silently as she read the back. "I don't know. This is very queer..." She handed it back to Hermione, who opened the letter, and began to read.

"Dear Miss Granger,

We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please find enclosed is a list of all books and equipment.

Term begins September 1st. We await your owl by no later than July 31st.

Both were quiet.

Hermione's mum broke the silence. "What do they mean, we await your owl?"

"I guess they mean post," said Hermione. "We should look at the list of supplies..." Again she began to read.

"Hermione, what-"

A sharp tapping on the kitchen window interrupted her mum. There was a large barred owl sitting on the windowsill. Hermione opened the window. The owl flew inside and dropped a piece of parchment on the table.

"So this is what they mean by 'owl'."

Hermione's mum picked up the parchment and began to write:

My child would be happy to attend. We just have a few questions.

  1. Where can school supplies of the magical sort be purchased?

  2. How will Hermione be transported to Hogwarts?

  3. Where will the transportation be leaving?

Thank you,

Jane Granger,

"Well, I guess now all we have to do is talk this over with your father."

She left the room and returned with a piece of paper, on which she wrote:

Please send an owl back later this evening, around seven or so. When your letter arrived, my husband was at work. Although I am for Hermione learning magic, my husband may not be.

Thank you,

Jane Granger

She gave the paper to the owl, which promptly left through the open window to deliver its message.

Hermione closed the window, sat down next to her mum and sighed.

"I sure hope Dad agrees. Magic sounds exciting."

Jane Granger looked up. Her and Hermione's eyes met for a brief moment. She sighed. "I hope so too, sweetie." She smiled and playfully tweaked Hermione's cheek, then got up and went into the parlor to read the paper. Hermione got up and went upstairs to finish a muffin and delve into a fantasy book to calm her nerves.

When David Granger arrived home, he was greeted with the smell of rosemary chicken, and an unnerving silence. This puzzled him a bit. Usually his wife could be heard humming while making the side to the meal they were to have, and the distinctive sound of pages could be heard from Hermione's book in the parlor. But today there was nothing. Just silence.

He entered the kitchen to see his wife tossing a salad. He set his briefcase down on the table, and she jumped. She laughed. "You know I don't like it when you scare me like that." She walked over and lightly kissed him on the cheek. "Where's Hermione?" Jane's happy expression faded a bit. "In the parlor." She sighed. "She's not been herself since the post this morning."

"What happened with the post?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.

"She got a school letter."

"Well, what's wrong with a school letter?"

Jane sighed. "It wasn't the kind of letter you're thinking of..."

"Well, then what kind of letter do you mean?"

"I think you'd better talk to Hermione about that."

Puzzled, David walked into the parlor. Hermione was staring off into space.

"Anything you want to tell me, princess?"

Hermione jumped. "Dad, you scared me."

David chuckled. "You looked so out of it, I'm not surprised." Hermione blushed.

"Today has been the weirdest day..."

"Your mum said you got a letter. Has it caused this disruption, by any chance?" David asked, raising an eyebrow.

It was Hermione's turn to laugh. "You guessed right, Dad. Today I got a letter, and I think it explains why I can write on paper by just thinking about what I want to write."

"This bears investigation. Okay, spill it."

"I got a letter that invited me to--"

"Hogwarts?"

"How'd you know?"

"Your great-grandpa may not have sounded like much, but he was a wizard. Magic apparently skipped two generations."

"Great-Grandpapa was a wizard?"

"Yep."

"Cool..."

"Well, I guess we're okay to send the reply, then?"

Now it was David's turn to jump. Jane Granger was standing in the doorway. "No time like the present," David said.

"Alright then. Hermione, it looks like you're going to Hogwarts."

A huge smile lit up Hermione's face.

Done... for now.

So? Tell me, how'd you like it? Say if you thought it was good, and if you thought it sucked, too, criticism makes the next chapter better. Oh, and I've already started the next chapter, so it should be here in about a week, three weeks max. I never plan to keep everybody waiting longer than that. So, in the noble words of Bethany: 'Eat lots of Whoppers (the candy, not the burger!), drink water (it's good for you!), review and PLEASE draw fanart for this story!!'
