Once More with Phoenix
Barb
- Story Summary:
- What if Harry's difficulty with Occlumency stemmed from the fact that Voldemort had put a spell on all of Great Britain, forcing everyone to sing about his or her feelings, rather than being able to keep them a secret? Scene 10
Through the Fire
Harry is kneeling on the hearth in Umbridge's office, his head in the fire. Cut to the kitchen of number twelve, Grimmauld Place, where Harry's face is seen in the fire. Kreacher is at the kitchen door, about to leave the room. Harry is shouting at him desperately.
Where has Sirius gone? Kreacher, has he gone to the Department of Mysteries?
An unseen orchestra starts to play what seems to be an overture; Kreacher stops and speaks quietly as the music cuts off abruptly, since he is not actually going to “sing,” figuratively or literally.
Master does not tell poor Kreacher where he is going.
But you know! Don't you? You know where he is!
Kreacher is silent for two beats, then begins to cackle loudly and gleefully.
Master will not come back from the Department of Mysteries! Kreacher and his mistress are alone again!
Kreacher exits the kitchen. Harry stares after him, incredulous.
You--!
Staring around the empty, gloomy kitchen, he begins to sing...
I touch the fire and it freezes me;
It brought me to the house of Black.
But he has gone.
He's left and I'm alone...
Oh Padfoot, please come back!
Cut to Umbridge's office again; she pulls Harry from the fire and glares down at him as though she might slit his throat. She sings:
You think I'm stupid, but I'm not!
Harry sputters as he also sings, trying to cover.
I'm only tryin' to get my broom...
Now he sees Hermione across the room, being held by Millicent Bulstrode. Umbridge has Draco Malfoy take her wand and Harry's wand and she continues to sing.
Your lies will end--I've captured all your friends!
And now you'll meet your doom!
Neville, Ginny, Luna and Ron are also brought into the office by members of the Inquisitorial Squad.
You shall not talk through my fire!
That privilege is not earned!
And soon you shan't be a liar
For I shall--
Cut to Snape, walking to Umbridge's office.
That Potter cannot help but fail
He'll get us all killed 'fore the end
I hope he fries; I'm free if that brat dies
He's lucky I'm his friend...
Cut back to Umbridge in her office.
'Cause you cannot use my fire.
Some people--
Snape arrives at the office.
He will--
(in unison)
--never learn.
Cut to Umbridge, Harry and Hermione walking through the Forbidden Forest.
He only needed your fire
To talk to--
Cut back to Umbridge's office. Snape is gone and Ron, Ginny, Luna and Neville are fighting off the Slytherins before leaving the office. Ron begins to sing the secondary theme; the others continue it.
Will they manage to subdue her?
Sirius's chances may be fewer
If we take too long to help him out.
They're outside now, walking toward the forest; several long scratches are running the length of Ginny's cheek; a large purple lump is swelling above Neville's right eye and Ron's lip is bleeding.
Harry needs our help to save him.
Sirius? You mean Stubby Boardman?
(frowning, perplexed)
Care to tell me what this is about?
Cut to the four of them confronting Harry with Hermione, who are spattered with Grawp's blood and standing at the edge of the forest; the four start singing the intro to the chorus.
We'll see it through, we're here to do what we can do.
Cut to the six of them flying through the sky on their Thestrals, the setting sun making it look like the clouds are on fire.
So we will fly through the fire.
Cut to the six of them standing before the door to the Department of Mysteries as Harry returns to the original melody, supported by the others.
I'm going in alone--wait here.
No, Harry, we'll face this with you.
(harmonising)
What can't we face?
We're coming in--
(still harmonising)
--if we're together?
Can we just stop the squabblin'?
They go through the door and stand in the circular room.
All right, now we are through.
The door shuts and the circular wall starts spinning dizzily around them. They go into the brain room and stare thoughtfully at the brains in the tank. They continue to sing the secondary theme.
(looking at the brains)
Aquavirius maggots, maybe?
Cut to Lucius, standing in the Hall of Prophecy, his mask on his face.
(singing the original melody
in a duet with the others while
they continue the secondary theme)
So Potter's fin'ly come at last...
Cut back to the brain room.
No, they're brains...
I think we should leave...
Split screen: Lucius in the corner, the kids in the center.
The Dark Lord's dreams--
The six of them return to the circular room; the doors are spinning around them.
Everything is turning out so dark.
--have been his guide
(staring at the spinning doors and
singing the theme from the first scene)
--going through the motions--
They pass through another door and enter the Death Chamber.
We should leave...
(staring at arch, listening)
You hear that? In there...
But what he finds--
Talking? Yes, I hear them...
There? Where?
Ain't what he had in mind...
They return to the round room; Hermione makes a fiery cross on the door.
That should help--we'll always leave a mark.
The wall spins around them again, Hermione's burning cross creating a ring of fire around them.
There's nowhere left to hide.
The wall stops and they try, unsuccessfully, to open another door.
That's not the one--he's really got us on the run--
The doors spin again; this time Harry flings open a door and strides through it, the others following in his wake as he walks past ticking clocks.
(holding his final note while the others sing)
He will come to me--
They enter the Hall of Prophecy, shelves of glass orbs surrounding them, looking like they're filled with blue fire; they continue to sing the chorus as they walk through the hall.
And we have flown through the fire
The point of no return
So we will walk through the fire
And let it burn, let it burn,
Let it burn, let it burn!
Ron points out one of the orbs to Harry, who takes it off the shelf, staring at it. Then Ron taps him on the shoulder, his eyes wide, and Harry turns around to find twelve masked Death Eaters with their wands trained on them.
Showtime.
