Chapter 4: Of First Days and Mudbloods

The morning came much too fast, and a look at the clock on my nightstand said it was already 6:20. I quickly got out of bed and found that I was the last one to wake. Ellie came out of the bathroom, already dressed in her uniform, and said, "Good, I was just about to wake you up, Andie."

I smiled at her, gathered my belongings and hurried into the bathroom, which was decorated in shades of silver and green. I stepped into the closest shower stall and quickly showered. Since I had not yet learned the spell to dry my hair, I pulled it back into a French braid, while still wet. I dressed in my own uniform, smiling at the green badge that now adorned my robes and the green and silver tie that had appeared on my bedside table this morning.

I emerged from the bathroom to find Aimee and Ellie ready to go, but waiting for me. I looked around for Isadora, just as she rushed past me from the bathroom. By the time I had pulled on my black robes and my black hat, gathered my books and my bag, Isadora was ready to go.

It was 6:55 as we filed up the stairs and into the Common Room. We had five minutes to go. The first year boys were already there by the fireplace, and Ellie flounced over to a tall, dark-haired boy, who looked very much like her, though, he wore his black hair straight to his shoulders. His features, too, were sharper and more masculine, and he stood a head taller than her, so that she had to stand on her tip toes to kiss his cheek. She smiled, and waved us all over.

We approached, rather hesitantly, and she began the introductions at once. "This is Aimee Pucey, Andie Black, and Isadora Harden," she said, indicating each of us in turn. "And girls, this is my twin brother, Damien."

He nodded, and smiled, before indicating the other boys standing next to him. "This is Rabastan Lestrange," he said, acknowledging the handsome boy I had met in Diagon Alley, "Evan Rosier," indicating my blond-haired cousin - he shared the same looks as my mother and Cissy - "and Paul Yaxley," indicating an unattractive boy with bushy eyebrows, and shaggy brown hair.

After we all said our hellos, four students, including Bella, came up to our group. "Good morning, little first years," a blonde boy said, "My name is Joseph Dolohov and I am one of the fourth year students assigned to help you out. This is Liza Higgs, also a fourth year, Bellatrix Black and Nicholas Chang, both third years."

"We will be splitting you into pairs and each one of us has been assigned to help you out. I will be taking Aimee Pucey and Isadora Harden. Nicholas will have Paul Yaxley and Damien Wenlock. Bellatrix will have Andromeda Black and Danielle Wenlock, and Joseph will have Rabastan Lestrange and Evan Rosier," Liza said. "Now, let's all head to the Great Hall for breakfast."

I smiled at Bella, as she came over and linked arms with me, and I gave a quick introduction between Ellie and Bella before we left the common room. I tried very hard to memorize the confusing hallways so that I could do this on my own soon, but by the time we had gotten to breakfast, I was lost.

Breakfast was a loud affair with everyone getting to know one another more, and everyone rejoicing in their last moments before classes started. Bella wanted to know everything about my first night and wanted to know all about the other girls in my dormitory. I tried to answer her questions as best as I could, but it was never enough. I was relieved when Professor Slughorn came down the table passing out our schedules.

I heard Ellie groan in disgust even before I could look down at the slip of paper that I had just been given. Our Wednesdays consisted of double Transfiguration, History of Magic, Potions, and Herbology. I shook my head; Bella always said that Transfiguration was horrible because of Professor McGonagall and that History of Magic was the most boring subject ever. We finished eating and then Bella was elected to show all of us first years to Transfiguration before she continued onto Divination.

We all followed Bella to the third floor and filed into the Transfiguration classroom. I immediately took a seat in the front row, but I soon realized that I was the only one of my housemates to take a seat in the front row. I turned around in my seat to find that Ellie and Damien had taken seats at the table behind me, and Aimee and Isadora were at the next table over from them. Evan and Rabastan sat behind Ellie and Damien, and Paul sat alone at the table next to Isadora and Aimee. I bit my lip; I didn't want to move and sit in the back next to Paul, but I wasn't sure it would be good to sit next to someone from one of the other houses.

I was poised to move when a group of students, Gryffindors by the look of their robes, entered the room. When they saw us, they all fought for seats that wouldn't put them next to a Slytherin. Two boys were the odd ones out and the sandy-haired one sat down next to me, while the dark-haired boy took a seat next to Paul.

"I'm Ted Tonks," the boy next to me spoke up.

I looked over at him and found him to be a bit taller than me with wide blue eyes. He seemed nice enough, so I replied, "Hi, I'm Andie Black."

His eyes widened slightly and I smirked, knowing that he had heard about my family.

"What do your parents do for a living?" I asked, curious as to why I had never heard of the Tonks family.

Ted looked slightly confused and answered, "Well, my mom is a teacher, and my dad is a surgeon."

I frowned in confusion, and asked, "What's a surgeon?"

He raised an eyebrow and said, "It's kind of like a doctor."

I was still confused, not knowing what a doctor was, and asked, "Well, did your parents go to Hogwarts?"

"No, I'm the first wizard in my family," he answered as if this was obvious.

"Wait, you're a Mudblood?" I said, my eyes widening in surprise.

Unfortunately, at that moment, Professor McGonagall entered the room. "Ten points from Slytherin and detention, Miss Black," she said. "Eight o'clock tonight, in my office."

I sighed and said, "Yes, m'am," before putting my head in my hands.

I remained quiet for the rest of the lesson, taking notes on theory and then attempting to change my matchstick into a needle. By the end of the double lesson, only a Gryffindor named Emmeline Vance was successful. However, I had succeeded in turning my match silver.

The Slytherins all trudged out of the classroom, and Rabastan said to me, "Great job, putting that Mudblood in his place. It was definitely worth losing points."

I bit my lip and refrained from saying anything. I didn't mean to get in trouble, but I just couldn't believe that Ted was a Mudblood; he looked so normal.

I kept to myself the rest of the day, only answering questions when I was called on. At dinner, I sat between Ellie and Aimee and tried to avoid Bella. I spoke with Ellie, Aimee and Isadora about all of the homework that we had to work on and we looked at our schedule for the next day which included double Defense Against the Dark Arts, History of Magic, Charms and Astronomy.

After dinner, we hurried back to the common room and started on our Transfiguration homework - a series of theory-based questions to answer. We had just pulled out our books when Bella came in and took a seat on the arm of my chair.

"So, how was your first day, Andie?" she asked me, her brown eyes sparkling.

"It was fine, but we already have tons of homework," I replied, biting my lip and reading the first question.

"Well, I heard that you already lost some points from Slytherin and you have detention tonight," Bella continued, narrowing her eyes.

"It was nothing; you know how Professor McGonagall is. I just had to put that Mudblood in his place," I answered, hoping to diffuse the situation with Bella.

Bella's face broke into an uncharacteristic smile and she said, "Yes, well, I'm very proud of you, little sister."

I gave Bella a half smile and said, "I need to get this finished before my detention. Sorry, Bella!"

"That's fine, Izzie and I are going to the library before curfew," she said with a wink. I had a strong suspicion that she was going to look up more on Dark magic, and I felt my heart drop. She stood up quickly and jumped up, linking arms with Izzie as they left through the entranceway.

I watched my sister leave and then turned back to Aimee, Isadora and Ellie continuing our homework until I noticed that it was ten minutes before eight. I put my books away, said goodbye to the girls and left for detention

I made my way to the first floor and knocked on the office door. Once I heard Professor McGonagall say, "Enter," I opened the door and stepped inside.

"Miss Black, I have had to endure many detentions with your older sister over the past two years. Is this what your future holds for you?" Professor McGonagall asked, looking at me.

"No, Professor," I said with my head down.

"Then, what was the meaning of your outburst this morning? We do not allow the use of that word in this school, Miss Black," she said, with her eyes narrowed.

"I apologize, Professor, but I did not realize. I mean, that's what he is, isn't he?" I asked, genuinely confused.

"Miss Black, I understand that you may have been raised to believe such terms are appropriate to use, however they are not. That term is very derogatory and is by no means tolerated. Trust me when I say that you have gotten off easy with this punishment and that the next time will not be so. Do you understand me?" Professor McGonagall said, standing up.

"Yes, m'am, I understand," I replied.

"For your detention tonight, I would like you to clean all of those cages out by hand," she continued, gesturing to the row of cages holding guinea pigs to the left side of the office. "Then, tomorrow, you will apologize to Mr. Tonks for using that word. I will know if you do not and you will serve another detention," she finished, before returning to the paperwork in front of her.

I nodded and turned to the cages. I spent the next hour cleaning out the six cages. When I finished, Professor McGonagall dismissed me and I hurried back to the common room, so as not to be caught out after curfew.

I was more than a little confused. My entire upbringing went against everything that Professor McGonagall said tonight. I went to bed after finishing a bit of Herbology homework and woke up the next day to another full schedule.

My first class was Defense Against the Dark Arts with Professor Fleming, a little old stooped witch, who didn't look able to handle a class of students let alone the Dark Arts. It was a rather boring class, as was History of Magic. After lunch, Charms was a bit livelier as we began to learn how to levitate objects. Finally, we had Astronomy with the Gryffindors. After the first class, I had learned my lesson and always sat in the second row with Aimee. After learning about star charts, the class was set our first bit of homework. When the class was dismissed, I hung back and waited to speak with Ted Tonks.

"Ted, I'd like to apologize for yesterday. I did not mean to call you that, I was just surprised that you were not like me," I began.

"It's fine, Andie," he interrupted. "I've been informed about your family, and I realize you didn't mean to be rude or insulting. It's just in your nature," he finished before walking off in the opposite direction.

I was surprised by his attitude. What had he heard about my family? This Mudblood did not know his place, did he? 'Well, he would just have to be taught a lesson,' I thought as I continued down to the Great Hall for dinner.
