It was the last day of Ginny's sixth year at Hogwarts. She sat alone at dinner, listening to Professor McGonagall's farewell speech. Harry, Ron and Hermione had already graduated, and were celebrating with their fellow Hogwarts graduates at the Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade.
There was little else to celebrate these days. Lord Voldemort was still at large, as well as most of his Death Eaters.
Ginny looked up to the Head Table. Dumbledore's empty seat seemed to intensify the gloominess of the room. No one knew when he would be released from St. Mungo's, or even if he would be released.
Professor McGonagall finished her speech, and food suddenly appeared on the four House tables. Ginny wasn't very hungry, and she missed Harry, Ron and Hermione, so she ate very little.
After dessert, Ginny headed upstairs to the Common Room with the rest of the Gryffindors. She sat in front of the fire, reading a book Hermione had borrowed from the library for her. When the common room was almost empty, Ginny went upstairs to her dormitory. After changing into her pajamas and making sure she was all packed, Ginny climbed into bed.
As she drifted off to sleep, Ginny felt a funny feeling, reminiscent of panic, in her stomach. The last time she had felt this, Dumbledore had been attacked by Voldemort, and sent to St. Mungo's, barely alive. Ginny sat bolt upright, no longer tired. She grabbed for the two-way mirror Harry had given her for Christmas.
"Harry Potter," Ginny said, looking at the mirror. Colors swirled across the mirror, obstructing her reflection. Then she saw Harry's reflection smiling up at her.
"Hey there, Ginny! How are things up at the castle?" Harry asked.
"Um, fine," Ginny lied. Somehow she couldn't bring herself to tell Harry. "I was just...checking to see how the party was." She forced a smile.
"Oh, it's wicked," Harry said, also smiling.
"Good! Well, see you later!" Ginny put away her mirror and got out of bed. She dressed and snuck out of the dormitory and grabbed Harry's Invisibility Cloak. If she was going to sneak around at night, the last thing she needed was Filch catching her.
A few minutes later, Ginny found herself on the grounds. There was no moon, and the stars were dim, so Ginny took off the cloak. She walked halfway around the lake before settling herself on the grass. Just a few weeks ago, she, Ron, Harry and Hermione had been lounging here, soaking in the sunrays.
Something shiny was floating in the shallows of the lake. Ginny bent over to pick it up, and before she could see what it was, she was surrounded by a swirl of light, with a pain behind her navel. A moment later, Ginny touched down and almost fell over. She looked at what she was holding: a silver teacup that read H.H. on the side. Ginny looked around. She was in a small room that looked like it belonged in an inn. No one else was in the room, but it was soon filled with a cold voice.
"My, my, it's little Ginny Weasley," said the voice. "I yet again failed to get Potter. Oh well, at least I got someone he cares about."
"You-you'll never get Harry," Ginny stammered. "He'll get you first, he'll always win."
"It's not about him right now, it's about you," Voldemort laughed, raising his wand. Before Ginny could react, Voldemort was yelling "Crucio!"
Ginny was in more pain that she had ever experienced. She lay on the yelling, yelling, sure she was going to die, willing herself to die just so the pain would be over. After what seemed like hours filled with pain, filled with her own screams, filled with Voldemort's evil laughter, it stopped. Ginny was certain she was dead. Her eyes were visionless, her limbs were numb...
"Ginny?"...She thought she heard a voice..."Ginny?"...It was getting clearer now. "Ginny? Are you alright?"...Harry! It was Harry's voice! He was here, he had saved her...
Ginny struggled to open her eyes. There was Harry, leaning over her, trying to wake her. "Please, Ginny, please, wake up..." Was that a tear, running down Harry's cheek?
"Harry," Ginny said thickly. "Harry, I'm OK."
"Ginny! Oh, thank God, you're OK," Harry smiled a small smile of relief, and leaned over to give Ginny a rather awkward hug. "Can you stand?"
Ginny nodded. She had a pounding headache, but the feeling had returned to her body. Harry helped her to stand up. She shook slightly on the spot and Harry put his arm around her waist to help support her. She looked around the room and the sight nearly made her black out. Ron and Hermione were lying motionless on the floor, apparently stunned. Dumbledore was leaning over, working to revive them.
Harry, seeing the look on Ginny's face, hastened to reassure her. "They're OK, just knocked out. Don't worry about them."
Ginny started crying. "It's all my fault. I shouldn't have come here..."
"No, Ginny, it's good that you came," Harry said.
"No, it's not, it's my fault, Ron and Hermione almost died..."
"Ginny, listen to me," Harry said, grabbing her arms and turning her to face him. "Voldemort's gone because you came here. It's thanks to you..." But Ginny wasn't listening. She was staring at Harry's forehead.
"Harry, it's.... your scar's gone," she whispered.
Harry ran his hand over his forehead. "You're right..." he turned to Dumbledore, who was sitting on the floor next to Ron, the two trying to revive Hermione. "Why is my scar gone?"
"Marks of the evil disappear when the evil itself disappears," the old man answered. He looked healthy, but very tired. Hermione woke up then.
"Is he gone?" she asked. "Harry!" she exclaimed, jumping up and embracing Harry and Ginny. "You did it! You got rid of Voldemort!"
