Hermione's Very Secret Diary

1 September

The train ride was long, but then again, it always it. Harry, Ron and Neville talked about the Quidditch Cup, and played Exploding Snap the whole way. I decided to read up on Arithmancy instead. You can never be too prepared for lessons.

The Welcome Feast was fabulous as always...except that Nearly Headless Nick told me something so disturbing that my views about Hogwarts have completely reversed. This castle is the owner of over one hundred enslaved house-elves! How I ever missed that is beyond me. I need to do something about this.

But first I have to concentrate on my lessons. Herbology is first thing in the morning.

5 September

The new Defense Against The Dark Arts teacher, Mad-Eye Moody, sure lives up to his name. On our first day back, he turned Malfoy into a ferret. I won't pretend that it wasn't funny, but Malfoy could have been seriously injured! Anyway, Moody's lesson today was the most interesting Defense Against The Dark Arts lesson I've ever had, and that is saying something. He told us that he would be performing an Unforgivable Curse on us! And he kept shouting "Constant Vigilance", which made us all jump every time he said it.

22 September

Today is my birthday. I'm fourteen. Ron gave me a nice box of Sugar Quills, though I'm confused. He knows that I always take notes. Harry gave me a box of Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans. Mum and Dad sent me some books that I had wanted, and Grandma and Grandpa sent some nice stuff, too.

30 October

The delegates from Beauxbatons and Durmstrang came today. Everyone, including Ron, was fawning over Viktor Krum. I admit that he is a talented Quidditch player, but fame isn't everything. I'm not Harry's friend because he's famous. In fact, I'm Harry's friend despite his fame. I know he didn't ask for it, but it is difficult being friends with the most famous wizard of our age.

31 October

Today is Halloween. There are only supposed to be three champions in the tournament, but somehow there are four. Harry's name was pulled from the Goblet. He says that he didn't put his name in, and I believe him. However, I seem to be one of the few. Even Ron reckons that Harry put his name in as a way to get more attention. I don't know how he can think that, but there is no way I can convince him otherwise. He's always been jealous of Harry. This can't have helped.

5 November

Harry is very uncomfortable about all the fame he's receiving. Apparently, Rita Skeeter is after him now. After that mess she made after the Quidditch Cup, I don't care to see what she does to Harry's reputation.

22 November

Harry has meetings with Hagrid and Sirius tonight. I hope he doesn't get caught.

23 November

Harry just told me...the first task involves dragons. Why Dumbledore let him get into this!!!!

27 November

I don't know how I ever doubted Harry. He was amazing with that dragon. And thanks to that, Ron started speaking to him again. I am so glad. Harry doesn't seem to appreciate the library as much as he should. And he seemed depressed.

Krum's been hanging around the library, though. It seems like every time I'm trying to study, he's in there. It's not Krum that's the problem; it's his "fan club". Twits. Like I said, fame isn't everything.
