Chapter 1 - The Return to Hogwarts
Ginny Weasley trotted down the stairs of The Burrow, tying back her red hair into place as she went. It was the morning that she would be returning to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for her sixth year of training. And she couldn't wait to go.
Ron Weasley, her older brother by one year, was already seated at the table in their homely kitchen. He was working his way through a huge bowl of steaming porridge. At his side was Harry Potter, also with a bowl of porridge, but Ginny nearly ignored him. Her young, schoolgirl crush on him had long passed. Her eyes were entirely on Seamus Finnigan.
"Morning Ginny dear," Mrs. Weasley greeted her. "Do you have all of your books? Your wand? Your..."
"Everything's packed. I checked my list four times," she added as her mother opened her mouth to say something else. The 16 year-old Ginny was nearly as organized as Hermione Granger. If she said she had it, she had it.
"Well, eat some breakfast then," her mother said, thrusting a bowl into her hands. Ginny took it and began to eat the thick substance. She caught Ron's eye, who grimaced before his eyes gleamed. When Mrs. Weasley turned her back on them, he poured half of the remaining porridge into Pigwidgeon's food dish. The tiny owl slurped it back before their mother turned back, with a little help from Hedwig, Harry's gorgeous snowy owl.
"Let's go, let's go," Mr. Weasley shouted, bursting into the kitchen. The three kids gulped back a few more bites before following him out the door. He'd managed to buy another car, and enchant it with his wife's permission. She had demanded that he not charm it to fly, like the Ford Angelica he had once had. Instead, Mr. Weasley fixed the invisibility button.
Ginny handed her trunk to the boys, who heaved it into the back of the car. "What's in that thing?" Ron asked, rubbing his biceps. "I swear..."
"Bricks probably," Harry offered. Ginny glared at him.
"Books that Hermione wanted to borrow, of course," she replied airily, slipping into the front seat of the red Chevrolet Cavalier. "Hurry up. You guys are so slow. Honestly." She huffed and slammed the door closed. Harry and Ron climbed into the back seat while Mr. Weasley took the wheel.
"All buckled in? Nothing left behind? Got your owls boys?" They both lifted the cages into the air to show the softly hooting owls. Seemingly content that they were ready to go, Mr. Weasley started the car.
"Bye mum!" Ron and Ginny called out at the same time. Mrs. Weasley waved tearfully from the front door of The Burrow.
"Bye Mrs. Weasley! Thanks for everything!" Harry added. Ginny knew that her mother was very important to him. She was the only motherly figure he had in his life.
The car drove along a leaf-covered road towards London. King's Cross wasn't that far away from their home, and she was glad. Cars scared her, and Ginny wasn't too sure on how Muggles rode in them all the time.
The place was packed. The four of them walked through the crowds of people until they reached the spot between stations nine and ten. Mr. Weasley hugged Ginny firmly before sending her through. On the other side of station 9 ¾, the Hogwart's Express waited patiently as students clambered on. Ginny hauled her trunk, with some difficulty, onto the train and into a compartment near the back. Ron and Harry joined her soon after, and Hermione rushed in to greet them.
"Harry, Ron, Ginny!" she cried, pulling the three of them into a tight hug. "It's so good to see you!" Ginny smiled at her friend.
"Aren't you supposed to be in the Head Boy and Girl's compartment?" she inquired. Hermione shrugged.
"I already settled in, and I think Justin isn't even here yet." Justin Finch-Fletchley was the Head Boy this year. Ginny had been sure that Harry, or even Ron, would have gotten the spot. "I just needed to stop by and say hi," Hermione chirped.
"Please go easy on us this year 'Mione," Ron begged.
"We promise to be good," Harry said. Ginny noticed his fingers were crossed behind his back. Hermione gave them a piercing stare.
"Do you honestly think I believe that?" she demanded.
"We'd hoped so," Harry replied. "Do you?"
"No," Hermione huffed. "I'm going now." She pointed at the boys with her finger. "Be good."
Chapter 2 - Enter the Girl
"I can't believe you did that," Ginny moaned from her seat. Ron looked up at her with raised eyebrows.
"What?" he demanded.
"You totally set yourself up to get checked. Look. His knight can take your bishop, and then it can go for your king." She leaned over and pointed at Harry's blue knight and Ron's poor bishop.
"Can not..." Ron began to protest, and then his eyes grew wide. "Oh no. At least don't give him ideas Gin."
"I am not," she started when the compartment door slid open loudly. The three glanced up at the figure in the doorway. Please don't be Malfoy, Ginny pleaded in her mind. And it wasn't. Instead, a tall, slim girl stood there, her fingers curled around a brown duffel bag that's color matched her hair.
"Hi," she said, her voice obviously trying to hard to be happy. "May I sit with you?" Ginny looked back at Ron and Harry, who were both staring in complete fascination.
"Of course," Ginny said after she was certain they weren't going to talk. "I'm Ginny Weasley." She held out her hand to shake with the girl's.
"Kerry Brown." They shook hands quickly. The girl dropped her duffel bag onto the floor and slipped into a chair. The boys had yet to take their eyes off of her. "I'm new."
"What year are you in?" Harry finally asked, looking as if his tongue wasn't quite following his commands. Kerry looked down at him, where he was laying on his stomach.
"Seventh." It was now that Ginny realized that the girl had an accent, and she tried to place it. She sounded...Canadian. "I used to go to the wizardry school back home, but my dad works for the army." She smiled almost ashamedly. "I'm an army brat."
"What's that?" Ron asked curiously. He was leaning towards Kerry, and Ginny almost laughed out loud. Her brother was such a boy.
"Army brat? It means that you're the kid of someone who works in the army, and you get moved around a lot. Right now my dad's been stationed over here to work with the English government." Kerry looked thoughtful, and Ginny immediately realized that this was the kind of girl Hermione would love to talk to. It was obvious that Kerry was a Muggle-born, not a pureblood, just by the way she talked.
After a moment of awkward silence, Ginny piped up again. "Oh, by the way, this is my brother Ron and his friend Harry." She pointed to each in turn, even though it was probably obvious which one she was related to. The red hair usually took care of that for them.
"We're seventh years too," Harry added. "Do you know which house you'll be in?"
"No...I have to do the Sorting Hat still. Not with the first years," Kerry furthered quickly. "Your Headmaster...Dumbletore...Dumble...Dumble...what is his name again?"
"Dumbledore," they all replied.
"Right. Him. He said I was to go to his office afterwards and get sorted then." Kerry flushed. "How do you get sorted anyways?"
"They stick a hat on your head," Ron started.
"It talks, it does," Harry continued.
"It reads your mind and tells you what house you'll be in," Ginny finished. "Don't worry about it. My older brothers, they're twins, Fred and George, used to tell me that they made you wrestle a troll. But that's not true. It's not scary at all."
"Unless it tells you you're supposed to go into Slytherin," Ron piped up. "Then you should run away screaming."
"Why? What's bad about that house?"
"All the wizards from Slytherin are evil," Ron stated. "All of them."
"Especially Malfoy," Harry agreed.
"What about me?"
