Remus is left empty and hollow after Sirius dies; his heart takes another blow and he begins to close up, but remembers a time when he was in a similar state nearly sixteen years previously. What with new blood in the Order and time ticking by, people lose ground for their beliefs and trust when it is most crucial to have such.
