Harry Potter and the Wizard of Oz

Chapter 3

Hermione had been following the yellow-brick road for a while, and there was a fork in the road up ahead. She wasn't sure which way to go.

There was a pumpkin patch to her left where there was a scarecrow on a stand, presumably scaring the birds away. Hermione went up to it, and noticed it had round glasses, emerald green eyes, and a lightning bolt scar on its forehead. This didn't seem that odd, until he spoke.

"You might want to go that way," it said suddenly, pointing to the right, "it's the quickest way to Oz."

Hermione jumped a foot in the air. She gasped, and backed away, horrified.

He said, "Oh, by the way, my name's Harry Potter. What's yours?"

"Y-you're a scarecrow! How d-do you have a n-name?" Hermione asked quickly.

"I'm not a scarecrow! Well, at least I didn't used to be... the Wicked Wizard of the East put a curse on me. I used to be one of the most famous wizards of all time.... The curse was so I'd be a scarecrow until I admitted that I had stolen some of his potion supplies, which I didn't! He always accuses me... anyway, what's your name?"

"Oh, I'm Hermione Granger, and guess what? You don't have to be a scarecrow anymore! I accidentally killed Snape, so you're free!"

"Not necessarily. You see, I was to be a scarecrow until I admitted I had stolen the potion supplies. I haven't yet, even though I never stole any... it looks like the only chance I have is to go to the Wizard of Oz for help! Do you mind if I journey with you? He could give me back my body!" Harry exclaimed, and leaped off the stand, onto the yellow-brick road.

Hermione was overtaken with joy.

"Of course I don't mind you coming... I'm traveling to Oz so the Wizard can send me home. A tornado brought my house here-- well, me and my owl, Hedwig," she replied, and they set off happily, taking the right turn to Oz.

After traveling down the yellow-brick road for some time now (with Harry by her side), Hermione was no getting a bit hungry. She hadn't eaten since the night before.

"Harry, do you know of some place that we can get something to eat?" she asked, eagerly awaiting the answer.

"Er, no. The yellow-brick road doesn't have drive-thru restaurants...."

Hermione looked around sadly. She was very hungry, and was glad when she spotted a grove of apple trees along the road.

"Look, apples!"

Harry and Hermione made their way over, and picked an apple.

"Hey!" called someone, "leave my apples be! People don't go around picking things off you every day, do they?"

Two strong hands grabbed Hermione around the waist, and pulled her up into the air.

"Let go of me!" she screamed, as Harry whacked the tree, trying to free Hermione.

After a few minutes of struggling, Harry finally succeeded, and Hermione was freed from the grip of the apple tree.

They ran down the yellow-brick road until they could run no more, and, ironically enough, there happened to be a shady resting place over to the side of the road.

Hermione pointed it out, and they went over to rest.

But something stopped them.

In the grass stood a tin man, with green stripes all down his shirt front.

His mouth was bound shut with super glue, as were the crooks in the legs, so he couldn't move.

"Oh goodness!" she gasped, and they hurriedly set to work un-super gluing his body.

When he could finally move (and talk), he pointed toward the North.

"Oz would be that way, I believe. But don't trust me... I'm just a lousy Slytherin," he said angrily.

"What do you mean?" Harry and Hermione chorused.

"Oh nothing," he replied.

"What's your name?" Hermione piped up, "I mean, if you have one...."

"Draco Malfoy. What's it to you?"

Hermione was taken aback.

"Nothing; we were just wondering if you would like to come to Oz with us, maybe to get you a better attitude," Harry said smoothly, making Draco grimace.

"Fine. Going with you is better than staying here... the Wicked Wizard of the Northeast super glued my mouth and legs shut a few weeks ago. I haven't been able to move since."

"The Wicked Wizard of the Northeast?!?" Hermione gasped, shocked.

She had never heard of him before.

"Oh, you must not know. He's my father (stepfather, actually), Lucius Malfoy. He's sort of evil, so watch out. Not that I'm worried about you, or anything--"

"Sure. Now, let's go, before the Wicked Wizard of the West comes, or something!" Harry said angrily, pulled Hermione away from Draco, and they began the rest of the journey to Oz.

"I'm tired! Can't we rest now?"

Draco's sharp voice cut like a knife through Harry's peaceful thoughts about his human body, but now he was left with nothing.

"Not too much far now," he replied, mad at the tin boy, "hey, you never explained why you're made of tin, Malfoy--"

"Draco!" Hermione said impatiently, and then let Draco answer.

"My father also turned me into a tin man... I used to be a handsome, blonde boy. Now I'm just--"

"Yech!" Harry said in unison with Draco.

He grinned at him, and they both wrapped their arm around Hermione at the same time.

But she didn't mind.
