Chapter 1

Hermione Granger woke to her brothers making a racket, once again.

"Fred! George! What are you two doing?" she screamed at the top of her lungs.

Fred Granger stuck his head through her doorway, and said in an equally loud voice, "Nothing, miss! It's just that Auntie Minerva wants you!"

Hermione sighed, got out of bed, and went into the parlor, where her Aunt Minerva, Uncle Hagrid, and the evil next-door neighbor, Mr. Riddle, were sitting.

Just then, her owl Hedwig flew in through the window, and landed on her shoulder.

"There it is! There, I tell you!" Mr. Riddle said loudly.

Aunt Minerva got up, hugged Hermione, and said quietly, "Hermione, darling, you do know why Mr. Riddle is here, correct?"

Hermione shrugged. "Why?"

Uncle Hagrid exclaimed, "Because yer owl, Hedwig! She keeps a flyin' into Tom's garden, and it's messin' up his flowers!"

"That's right," Tom Riddle said stubbornly, "and I'll call the Ministry if you don't let me take that owl, and kill it! It has no right to live!"

Hermione gasped, and started crying, "But Auntie Minerva! Uncle Hagrid! You won't let him, will you?"

"I'm afraid so, Hermione," Aunt Minerva said sadly, "but maybe we can get you a different pet? A new owl, maybe?"

Tears were splashing down her front, as she furiously handed over Hedwig.

"There! Now, just go, Mr. Riddle! You've caused enough damage already!"

Tom Riddle got onto his broom, tied Hedwig's cage onto it, and zoomed off into the sky.

As he was flying, however, Hedwig opened the cage with her beak, and flew out, unbeknownst to Mr. Riddle.

She flew until she reached the Grangers, and into Hermione's room, where she lay sobbing on her bed.

Hedwig poked her quickly with her beak.

"Hedwig?!?" she gasped when she laid eyes on her beautiful snowy owl, "oh, Aunt Minerva and Uncle Hagrid won't be very pleased to see you back. They'll think Mr. Riddle is coming back also... what if he will?"

She picked up Hedwig, put her quickly into her cage, grabbed her Nimbus 2000, and tied the cage to it.

"Don't fly out; if you do, you'll be seen!"

Hermione opened her window as much as possible, kicked off of the ground, and flew away.

She flew until she could fly no more. Landing onto a dusty dirt road, she looked around slowly. She didn't know where in the world she could be.

"Why, hello there!" came a cheerful man's voice from somewhere to her right.

She turned quickly only to find a tall, thin, and handsome man with blue eyes and matted black hair.

He smiled at her, and beckoned her inside a cave.

Hermione followed quickly, eager to get out of the windy weather.

When she had come inside, the man pointed to a chair on the far side of the cave, as he sat down into one on the other side.

Curiously, she said, "Who are you, and what do you want with me?"

"Oh, pardon me! I forgot to introduce myself... how silly! My name is Sirius Black--"

"The escaped convict? Oh, what are you going to do with me? Kill me? Curse me? Turn me into a ferret?"

"No, no, of course not! I would never dream of it... but I was going to offer to give you a free fortune," he replied kindly.

Hermione decided that he wasn't going to hurt her, so she stayed.
