Looking Through Your Eyes

James Potter watched Lily Evans dreamily as he put his telescope away. She was so perfect in every way, so delicate and fragile - he absolutely loved the way she bit her lip when she was nervous and how she tucked her beautiful flaming red hair behind her ears when she was working. She was so...

"Mr. Potter!" Professor Sinistra said. "I asked you to stay behind so Miss Evans can help you!"

James almost died right then and there. "Oh yea... right," he said. "See you later guys," he said to Sirius and Peter. Remus was... how should I say it? Unavailable for certain reasons.

"Later, Jamie," Sirius said, picking up his telescope and walking towards the door behind Peter.

"Don't call me Jamie, Sirius!" James called after him. He slammed the door shut. He and Lily were alone.

"Hi," said Lily. "Have we met before?"

"Umm... I don't think so. I'm James, James Potter."

"Lily Evans," said Lily. "Aren't you a Gryffindor Chaser?"

"Yea..." James said.

"Well," Lily said. "Let's get to work so we can get back to bed. What do you see up there?"

Look at the sky, tell me

What do you see?

Just close your eyes and describe it to me.

"Er... a big black blob with a whole bunch of little dots in it," James said. He was using sarcasm to cover up his stress.

"Oh, I guess that gives you a ten out of ten in creativity," Lily said.

"Why thank you. I'm touched."

"I was being sarcastic."

"Oh."

"I guess you really don't pay attention in Astronomy, do you?"

"Not really," James shrugged. "What's the point?"

"We might not be here."

"Well, it is better than being with Sirius."

"Oh," Lily said, rolling her eyes. "What is that constellation?" she asked, pointing to the sky.

"Er... Pluto?"

"Pluto is a planet, James."

"Oh. Er... Gemini?"

"That's right," Lily said cheerfully. "Wow, it's really nice out tonight, isn't it?"

"It's beautiful," James said under his breath. Lily didn't realize that he wasn't talking about the sky.

The heavens are sparkling with starlight tonight.

"So... what's that one?"

"Mercury?"

"Mercury is a planet too."

"Oh, umm... the Milky Way?"

Lily giggled. "No, that's a galaxy."

"Right... oh, I see it now! Orion!"

"No, actually it's the Big Dipper."

"Oh."

Suddenly a bone-chilling howl split through the air. James closed his eyes tight and tried to forget about it. "What was that?" Lily asked, sounding frightened.

"Oh - uh - I'm sure it was nothing," James said. Poor Remus, he thought.

"Are you sure?"

"No, but let's just forget about it. I don't want to think about it."

"Okay."

They continued to work, and James continued to mess up even on the basic constellations. Suddenly James realized that Lily's head was on his shoulder. He took his finger and twirled her hair around it as Lily asked him what a star was named.

"Sirius," he said confidently.

"I'll bet he told you that."

"Actually, he threatened to kill Pete, Remus, and I if we didn't know it, so... you know."

Lily giggled. James looked into her eyes. They were bright green and made his knees wobble. They're even more beautiful than the stars, James thought.

That's what I see through your eyes.

"So... what's that one?"

"Cancer?"

"No."

"Gemini?"

"No."

"Orion?"

"No."

"Wait - it's the Big Dipper again!"

"No, it's the Little Dipper."

"Drat."

Lily grinned. James swooned.

I see the heavens each time that you smile.

I hear your heartbeat just go on for miles.

James began playing with Lily's hair again. She didn't seem to mind. God, she's beautiful, James thought.

And suddenly I know my life is worthwhile.

That's what I see through your eyes.

"So... name the planets," Lily said.

"Gemini..."

"That's a constellation, James."

"Oh. Uh... Polaris?"

"Star."

"Earth?"

"Very good!" Lily said, chuckling. "Eight more to go."

"Double drat. Venus?"

"Ooh, two in a row!"

"Yay! Um... Pluto?"

"Three in a row! You get a sticker!" Lily pulled her wand out of her pocket and conjured a golden star.

"Ooh, pretty!" James said with slight sarcasm as she gave it to him. "Thanks."

"You're welcome," Lily grinned. God, she's so beautiful...James thought.

Here in the night,

I see the sun.

Here in the dark our two hearts are one.

It's out of our hands; we can't stop what we have begun.

And love just took me by surprise,

Looking through your eyes.

"Six more," Lily reminded him.

"Castor?"

"Star."

"Mercury?"

"Right again! Five to go!"

"Andromia?"

"It's Andromeda, and that's a constellation."

"Right... Mars?"

"Yes!"

"Uranus?"

"Yes!"

"Regulus?"

"No, that's a star."

"Oh... Neptune?"

"Right again! Two more!"

"Pisces?"

"Constellation."

"Saturn?"

"One more!"

"Uh... Cassiopeia?"

"Another constellation."

"Jupiter?"

"You got it!" Lily smiled. I love her smile... James thought.

Look at myself, and instead I see us.

Whoever I am now it feels like enough.

And I see a girl who was learning to trust,

That's what I see through your eyes.

"Now... how do the phases of the moon change?"

"What? Oh, you see - how am I supposed to explain this?" James moaned. "Okay, say this rock is the sun." James took a big rock and positioned it on the ground. "This rock is Earth - "James placed another one about eight centimeters from the 'sun,' " - and this one is the moon." James placed a pebble about a centimeter away from the 'earth.' "Okay, so the Earth orbits around the sun." He muttered a charm and the 'Earth' began to move around the sun. "Meanwhile, the moon is orbiting around the Earth." The 'moon' rock joined the moving rocks. "Now," James said, using his wand as a pointer, "the light from the sun hits the moon at certain angles, and therefore reflects to the Earth at certain angles, hence the phases of the moon. So the light goes boom, boom, boom." James hit the sun, and moon, and the Earth, in that order, with his wand.

"Boom, boom, boom?" Lily asked bemusedly.

"Boom, boom, boom," James replied.

"Well, it appears you something about Astronomy," Lily said cheerfully. "Now let's see how far I can throw that sun of yours..."

"And you're supposed to be my tutor?" James asked, equally bemused.

"Yup," Lily grinned. "But now that it is evident that you actually know a tiny bit about Astronomy, my job is done, and I want to see how far I can throw the sun."

Here in the night, I see the sun.

Here in the dark, our two hearts are one.

It's out of our hands; we can't stop what we have begun.

And love just took me by surprise,

Looking through your eyes.

"All right then," James smiled. "I get the Earth."

At the same time they threw the stones and watched them fall to the ground. "Well," Lily chuckled, "as the moon is too small to throw, I guess we can leave now."

"Uh... yea..." James said distractedly. For a moment he caught her eye. He stared at her for a whole minute before blushing and turning away.

"James?" Lily said weakly from behind him as he put his telescope away again.

"Yea?" James said, not turning around.

Lily placed a hand on his shoulder and he turned around. She was staring at him.

And there are some things we don't know.

Sometimes a heart just needs to go.

"Did you just..."

"Did I just what?"

"Look at me?"

"Yes. What did you think I was doing?"

"No, I mean... you were looking at me."

"Yes... and?"

"James, I think you know what I mean."

James focused more on her shoulder than her. "Yes, I do, and yes, I was."

Lily placed a hand on James's cheek and he looked into her eyes again. She kissed him.

And there are some things I'll remember.

Underneath the open sky, with you forever...

James blinked as Lily pulled away. Lily was turning pink.

"I shouldn't have done that," she said quietly. She turned, grabbed her telescope, and started to open the door when James came out of his trance.

"Lily! Wait!" he said, touching her hand and turning her around. She looked up at him timidly, her cheeks still bright red. James kissed her.

Here in the night, I see the sun.

Here in the dark, our two hearts are one.

It's out of our hands; we can't stop what we have begun.

Lily stared at him when he stopped. She was distinctly amazed.

"That was... wonderful," she breathed, looking at him. James now turned pink.

"And there's more... if you want it, that is," he muttered quietly.

And love just took me by surprise,

Lily looked up at him again and kissed his lips ever so lightly.

And James felt complete for the first time in his life.

Looking through your eyes.
