Chapter 1- The Moonlight Flight

Harry Potter opened his eyes and reached over to his nightstand. He fumbled around, searching for his glasses before finally locating them. He looked at the alarm clock and noticed that it read "2:58". He had been 15 years old for 3 hours.

He climbed out of his bed and walked over to his window. Privet Drive was bathed in moonlight from the full moon. Harry scanned the skies for any sign of Hedwig, his only companion during the summers he spent at 4 Privet Drive. He absently brought his hand up to his forehead to run his fingers over his scar. The scar shaped like a lightning bolt, inflicted upon him when he was only one year old by Lord Voldemort.

You see Harry Potter is no ordinary boy. He is a wizard, or at least a wizard-in-training. He was going to begin his fifth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry on September 1st. He turned away from the window and looked around his room.

His desk was covered in books, quills, pieces of parchment and Hedwig's empty cage. Harry had been working hard all summer on his homework. Before leaving Hogwarts last year, his teachers had assigned them a lot of work over the holidays. There was the "History of Giants in Britain" essay Harry had already completed for his History of Magic class. He had just completed his assignment on Animagi earlier that day for Professor McGonagall, his Transfiguration professor. The professors were preparing them for their O.W.Ls (Ordinary Wizard Levels), which were the tests every fifth year student at Hogwarts took.

He looked out the window once more, hoping to see Hedwig. He was expecting a letter from his godfather, Sirius. Sirius was in hiding, having broken out of Azkaban, a wizard prison two years before. Harry had found out he was innocent of the twelve murders he was accused of committing, but the only proof of Sirius' innocence was back with his dark master.

Harry's thoughts turned to Lord Voldemort. Lord Voldemort was an evil wizard who had killed Harry's parents when he was one year old, but had failed to kill him. After that night, he went into hiding. Harry had confronted Voldemort in first year at Hogwarts. Last year though, Voldemort had once again risen and killed a Hogwarts student and tried to kill Harry, but he was unsuccessful. He and Harry had dueled and their wands had connected, reversing the spells Voldemort's wand had performed. Harry had barely escaped Voldemort's grasp.

Harry sighed. He wasn't tired. He didn't know what had awakened him in the early morning hours of his birthday but he wasn't tired now. He looked around his room to find something to help to make himself sleepy. Homework? Nah, he thought to himself. He didn't want to spend his birthday working on his homework. He spotted his trunk and walked over to it. He lifted the lid and pulled out his broomstick and his invisibility cloak.

I'll go for a quick ride around the neighbourhood. Just to celebrate my birthday, he thought to himself. He quietly opened his window and stopped. He heard Uncle Vernon groan in his sleep. Assuring himself that everyone was still asleep, he pulled on his invisibility cloak and mounted his broomstick and flew out the window.

He soared high above the houses on Privet Drive. From a distance, they all looked identical. This was not the first time Harry had taken his broomstick out late at night. He needed to practice for the upcoming Quidditch season this year at Hogwarts. It had been over a year since Harry had played Quidditch because it had been cancelled last year due to the Triwizard Tournament, which had taken place at Hogwarts last year. He was the Seeker for the Gryffindor team and was quite a good flier.

Harry pointed his broomstick downwards and proceeded to dive towards the ground and pull himself upwards again. He was quite good at dives. Executing a fifty -foot dive is what got him on the Quidditch team in his first year. He dove again towards the ground, but his invisibility cloak got caught on a tree branch as he approached the ground. His cloak was pulled off him and he reached back to unsnag it from the tree branch. He had forgotten to pull out of his dive and grabbed onto his cloak before he could crash into the ground. His broomstick fell onto the ground and he was dangling from his cloak, ten feet from the ground, stuck in the tree.

Think, Harry thought to himself. He couldn't use magic to get himself down or else he would be expelled from Hogwarts. While he was thinking for a way to get himself down from the tree, he failed to notice that his cloak was slipping from the tree. He looked up at the branch just in time to see it snap and yelled as he fell to the ground.

He landed on the ground with a thud and groaned loudly has he rolled over onto his back. He looked up at the bright sky, full of stars, unable to move. He heard the sound of a door opening. He realized he had landed in someone's backyard. He tried to get up so he could get make a break for it, but his arms and legs wouldn't lift themselves to move. He turned to see who came out of the house and gasped in surprise.

"HARRY POTTER.... WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" screamed Mrs. Figg.
