Chapter Two: Unwanted Thoughts

**********

All you have to do is smile,

To make my life less vile.

To make me long for you.

Jamie had thought that she would bring Jenna to the Ministry for a while and afterwards bring her to Kings Cross on her break. They had to take the visitor entrance, which was an abandoned telephone booth in a rugged neighborhood. When they were both inside, Jenna shut the door behind them. Jamie began to dial 62442. Then a cool female voice sounded inside the telephone box.

"Welcome to the Ministry of Magic. Please state you name and business."

"I am Jamie Potter, an Auror, and I am here to escort Jenna Malfoy, who has been asked to attend a disciplinary hearing."

"What? I am not..."

"St!" Jamie put a hand to cover Jenna's mouth.

"Thank you," said the cool female voice. "Visitor, please take the badge and attach it to the front of your robes."

Out of the metal shoot came a badge where coins usually appeared. Jenna picked it up, it was a square silver badge with Jenna Malfoy, Disciplinary Hearing. She pinned it to the front of her T-shirt as the female voice spoke again.

"Visitor to the Ministry, you are required to submit to a search and present your wand for registration at the security desk, which is located at the far end of the Atrium."

The telephone box shuddered and they were sinking slowly into the ground. Jamie now took her hand off of Jenna's mouth.

"Why did you say that I had a disciplinary hearing?"

"That's the first thing that came to mind. You have to have a reason to go into the Ministry. And I wouldn't be surprised if Lucius did arrange a hearing for you. We'll see when we get inside."

"Jamie! Are you serious! But I haven't even started school yet!"

"Well, the hearing could be for consent disobedience to your parents, or abuse."

"I don't abuse anyone!"

"Well, your father can get you for anything, so watch your back."

The telephone box stopped.

"The Ministry of Magic wishes you a pleasant day," said the woman's voice.

The door sprang open and Jamie stepped out of it, followed by Jenna, whose mouth was hanging open. Halfway down the hall, Jenna could see a fountain. A group of golden statues, larger than life-size, stood in the middle of a circular pool. She ran towards the fountain, ignoring the many glances people were giving her. Jamie went after her but did not run. She tried to act casual and waved to her associates. When she reached Jenna, she found that she was in a trance, memorized by the statues. There were five. Tallest, was a noble-looking wizard with his wand pointing up in the air. Grouped around him were a beautiful witch, a centaur, a goblin, and a house-elf. The last three were all adoringly looking up at the witch and wizard. Glittering jets of water were flying from the ends of their wands, the point of the centaur's arrow, the tip of the goblin's hat, and each of the house-elf's ears.

"Jenna, come on. This way," said Jamie. They went to the golden gate. Underneath this gate read: Security. There was a badly-shaven wizard in peacock blue robes. He looked up as they approached and put down his Daily Prophet.

"I'm here with a visitor," said Jamie, lazily pointing a finger at Jenna.

"Step over here," said the wizard in a bored voice.

Jenna stepped forward and saw that he held up a long golden rod and passed it up and down her front which he took a very long time doing. Jenna put her hands on her hips and tried to look annoyed something that wasn't too hard to do. She glanced at Jamie who had a hand over her mouth to keep from issuing her laughter.

"Er, sir?" said Jenna.

"Hmmm?" he said still going up and down her front.

"I think it'd be a good idea if you checked my backside too?" She tried to sound sweet and innocent but there was a hint of the Malfoy drawl.

"Oh right." The wizard scratched the back of his head and began to move the golden rod up and down her back. Jenna was pleased that Jamie was holding in her laughter but was sure that she would let it out once out of earshot of this, shall we say, interested particular wizard. Thankfully, he didn't take as long as he did with the front and didn't need to be told when to stop. He stood up and rudely thrusted his hand out towards them.

"Wand."

Jenna took her wand out of her jean pocket and handed it to the wizard. He dropped it on a brass instrument. It began to vibrate. A narrow strip of parchment came speeding out if a hole in the base. The wizard tore this off and read the writing on it.

"Ten and a half inches, phoenix-feather core, been in use for...two weeks?" He looked befuddled by this. "That correct?"

"Yes," said Jenna very coldly. So what if she had only gotten her wand two weeks previous. It made sense considering she had only know that she was a witch not even two months ago.

"I'll keep this," said the wizard, putting the parchment through a golden spike. "You get this back," he added, gently placing the wand back into Jenna's outstretched hand.

"Thank you."

"Hang on," said the wizard slowly.

His eyes darted from the silver visitor's badge on Jenna's chest to her forehead.

"Thank you...er." Jamie caught a glance at the wizard's own identity badge. "Well, thank you again Eric!" Jamie grabbed for Jenna's shoulder and steered her away from the desk and towards the gate.

*********

Draco had been sitting at the table for a while. His house or manor seemed peaceful, something it hadn't been ever since Draco could remember. When Jenna came home with them, the noise only intensified. His parents would always fight about both Jenna and Draco, more frequently it had been Jenna. They had had sixteen years to fight about him. Draco could tell that his father disliked his sister. They themselves had a number of quarrels. Mostly, they were stupid things that his father went too far with. One thing was that the Malfoy's were rich. There was no need to wear cheap clothing. So one day, when Jenna had gone downstairs from breakfast in cotton pajamas that had snitches zooming around, it didn't go to well. To add to the situation, she had slippers, and a housecoat that matched made with a soft, fluffy material. Jenna wore a snitch necklace with matching earrings, and a beautiful charm bracelet. The whole outfit being snitches was fine with his father but the outfit was made from cotton, not silk. Everybody in the family had silk pajamas. Draco could clearly remember her father laying a pair on her bed, on the first night of her stay at the manor. You can only imagine his reaction. He called her a Weasley and that she was a disgrace! Even though Jenna had no clue to whom the Weasley's were, she said that Lucius was the disgrace, saying the things he did behind the Weasley's back. Lucius was very angry after that. Draco was wise and said nothing. He rather thought that the pajamas suited his sister. She didn't seem the kind to want to wear silk. But you had to admit that they did match. He also thought it stupid, that instead of asking who or where she had gotten the pajamas from, since they definitely didn't buy them, and no Muggle would have pajamas with a symbol of the wizarding world, his father was complaining that they weren't silk. Lucius called them cheap and ordered Jenna to go and change into the ones that he had bought her and then throw the "cheap" ones out. Jenna obediently went up stairs and came back down, looking exactly the same. Lucius asked why she didn't have the silk ones on. She told him that she had thrown them out because he did say to throw out the cheaper of the two. Jenna then vowed to wear those snitch pajamas's everyday, washing them regularly of course, and also said that she was going to buy Lucius a cardigan and some jeans. She claimed that he needed some clothes he could relax in. He didn't need to wear dress robes everyday. Her final remark to him was that if he was trying to impress anybody, it wasn't working. Draco laughed out loud at that vividly clear memory. He would never have had the guts to say that to his father. Amazingly, she had said all this only one week after she had first arrived at her new home and living with a new family. Draco was reminiscing that day when a sudden sound met his ears. He put all four legs of the chair down on the floor.

His mother, Narcissa, was very quickly making some eggs. Their house-elf was busy cleaning, and Arnold was off tending the Quidditch pitch. Draco got up to help with the toast. Jenna had taught him how to use the toaster. His mother fancied Muggle cooking appliances, one thing that his father hated. Lucius always tried to think that he was getting food either way. Narcissa almost let the frying pan fall when Draco had made the gesture of getting the bread out of the bag and putting it in the toaster.

"I never knew you knew how to use a toaster."

"I didn't, not until Jenna showed me. You weren't home and Albert nor Winnie was around. I had to make my own breakfast. So..." He stopped because of the wide smile his mother had. It looked almost fake and extremely eerie.

"I'm glad to see you two getting along nicely. I was worried that you would pester her, be sarcastic, or bicker all the time. Since you're not used to having another sibling in the house."

"Oh don't get us wrong Mum. We bicker a lot, just when you can't hear us, pestering is an old past time that I couldn't live without, and how could you not think that I'm sarcastic! It's what I do. She just takes it well. Quite annoying really. It's like she knows when I'm serious or pulling her leg. Sometimes, it's even scary! I mean, she's only been here and known me for two months or so, and I feel like she knows me better than I know myself! She's still a big mystery to me but I'll figure her out. I'll get something on her."

Narcissa stopped everything she was doing and turned to her son, putting a hand on his forehead. "Are you feeling alright Draco?"

"Yes mum. Get off of me!" he said swatting her hand away. She stepped back further and looked him up and down.

"It's just you were acting civilized to me. No rude comments or snarly attitude. Usually all you say to me is "food". Or I need this washed. Or where is this and that. And...." Narcissa half gasped half smiled. "And you're wearing a polyester shirt!"

"Yeah, so."

"You know as well as I do that you never have carried a civilized conversation with anybody for that matter and you never wear anything that is polyester. You and your father."

"You're right mum." A look of realization crossed his face.

"And you never call me Mum, it's always been mother. You've seem different ever since, well, Jenna came and I never really thought much of it until now and-"

"Jenna. She's the one who gave me this shirt. It is quite nice. She made it herself." The shirt was silver, the same colour as his eyes. There was a green snake with spots and slashes of other colors that curved around the shirt, sleeves, and neck.

"Where is your sister. I have to thank her."

"My own mother doesn't know where her daughter is? Typical."

"Stop it. I want the other Draco that could have civilized conversation."

Draco laughed. Was this what it was like to have a real mother? One you could joke around with and have fun? Did she really do more than just cook and clean? Draco had never seen this side of his mother but he rather liked it. He made a mental note to thank Jenna when he saw her again at Kings Cross. All his thoughts involving Jamie Potter vanished from his mind. At least for now. He was suddenly brought back to earth by his mother's shrill voice.

"Now, tell me where your sister is," she demanded.

Draco stopped laughing. She was serious now. "She's going to meet us at Kings Cross and said to bring her trunk and owl."

"Then you better put her things in the limo now. You know your father won't let you bring her belongings to the station after running off."

Draco nodded and grabbed a piece of toast that he had just buttered and walked quickly to the Entrance Hall. He opened the front doors and saw that the limo was already parked outside the door. Draco opened the trunk of the limo and put his sister's trunk and his own inside. He placed his own eagle owl in the back seat along with Jenna's snowy owl under the Invisibility Cloak. He slammed the door of the automobile shut and proceeded into the manor.

The light was shining brightly through the tall stained glass windows. A faint sound of high-pitched, angry voices could be heard further down the hall. Draco could see his father and mother fighting. What else? He wished that they would just give it up. They got married, had two kids, shouldn't they be happy? Draco laughed at himself forever thinking that this was possible. Only fools wish for the normal, happy, family life. His next thoughts went to the person he loathed more than no other, Potter. He had a normal, happy, family life.

Draco re-thought what he was thinking. Potter doesn't have a normal life. He hasn't had one since he was one. Always defeating the Dark Lord. Happy? Well he had friends and the whole wizarding world to worship him. A family life? He had a sister. Draco had a sister, a mother, and a father. Why he ever thought that Potter was normal, he didn't quite understand. The way he was beginning to look at it was that the guy deserved some slack. He didn't need a pompous ass jerk following him around and shooting insults his way. He had enough problems.

Draco shook his head. Why was he thinking about Potter? He banged his head against the wall to try and get all those things that he had been thinking. Did he really think that Potter needed some slack?
