All You Have To Do Is Smile

********************

Chapter One: That Damn Dark Lord

**********

All you have to do is smile,

To make my day worthwhile.

To light up the sun and the moon.

All you have to do is smile,

And I will walk a mile.

Just to get closer to you.

**********

The night was cold and gray and the moon seemed distant, far away. Jamie Potter, a girl of sixteen, daughter to Lily and James Potter and sister and twin to the famous Harry Potter, sat up on the edge of her four poster bed and flipped on her slippers to go tend to the dying flame. She found that there was no wood left and would have to cuddle under the covers to keep warm. She lived in number 15 Charring Cross Road, a nice apartment building that was located in the heart of London, quite close to the Leaky Cauldron and Diagon Alley. Her next door neighbors were an elderly lady named Mrs. Demarchuk and a girl her age named, Amoura Rookwood. Mrs. Demarchuk was a widow and was pushing her nineties. She still amazingly, Jamie thought, did not need any help living at all. When Jamie had moved in, the elderly lady had made her many fresh home baked pies. Amoura, who was sixteen, had moved out of her parents' home. She was having trouble with her mother and her rules. Though, she still manages to have two jobs to pay the rent and have time to go to school and do her homework. On top of that, Amoura has time to visit Jamie often. It was nice to have a girl her age around, even though she was a Muggle and knew nothing of Jamie being a witch. And you must be wondering how this is possible? How could Jamie be a witch and not go to Hogwarts? When Jamie was not even one year old, Voldemort kidnapped her. He had then expanded Jamie's mind so that her mind was older than her age. Voldemort wanted to use her for special assignments and such. Only when her brother weakened him, he fled. Jamie went to live with Albus Dumbledore at Hogwarts. Everyday had been an adventure for her there. Almost drowning in the lake, eating hot pepper jelly that almost burnt her tongue off, many encounters with the giant squid, and running around the school and interrupting classes was always great fun. Her first day of school was when she had been five, her seventh year at eleven (the year all other eleven year old started). After school was when she decided to became an Auror. Jamie finished her training at fifteen and was now the youngest Auror in Britain to this day. She's also a Death Eater, undercover for the Ministry.

Jamie got back into bed and crunched into a ball. The window was then thrown open, probably by the forceful wind.

"Damn it!" Jamie jumped off the bed and stomped over to the window. She reached for the latch to close it shut when a figure leapt out from the shadow and pushed her onto the floor. Jamie was wandless but wasn't afraid. She had learned to use magic without a wand and had formed a spell that enabled herself not to be killed by the Avada Kedavra curse, something that no doubt came in handy. She sprang to her feet and looked around. The figure was nowhere in sight but Jamie knew better than to think that whoever or whatever it was hadn't left, not yet.

"Show yourself you coward!" she demanded forcefully. Nothing appeared. A slight shiver ran down her spine. She always seemed to get this way when someone was behind her. Jamie pivoted quickly but there was nothing there.

"They must be under an Invisibility Cloak," she thought to herself. Then a simple conclusion came into her mind. Harry. Who else did she know that had an Invisibility Cloak and would lunge at her in the dark? A brother. That's something they would do.

"You can stop the charade now Harry! I know it's you!" There was a shimmer of sliver and a very shocked boy of sixteen with messy jet-black hair, round rim glasses and a lightning bolt scar appeared with an Invisibility Cloak fluttering to his feet.

"How did you know?" was all that would come out of his mouth. He had obviously thought that she wouldn't have found out. But why wouldn't she? Jamie was a very good Auror. He should've known that.

"How else could I not know?" She grinned maliciously. Harry jumped.

"Do. Not. Do. That! You look like Malfoy! For a second I thought you really were him!"

"Awe. Is my wittle baby brother all scarwed?" Jamie was by all means enjoying this.

"I'm only one minute younger! And that doesn't make much of a difference."

"Oh contraire! It makes a world of difference. I have to protect you wittle Harry."

"Like you should talk about little! I'm taller than you!"

Jamie glared at him. She tried to think of a good come back. She would not admit defeat. "So Harry, how's Cho?" Harry blanched. Jamie knew she had hit a nerve. Now to pry out the information.

"Well?"

"Wednogoutanmor." Harry mumbled.

"I'm sorry but I'm afraid you must speak up Harry."

"We're not going out anymore."

Now Jamie wished she hadn't brought Cho up. Harry didn't look very depressed about loosing Cho. He just looked tired. Jamie noticed that when he looked at her, she could she the boy of eleven inside of her sixteen-year-old brother. "Harry..."

"I'll leave now. Sorry to disturb you from your sleep." Harry scooped up the Invisibility Cloak and threw it over himself.

"Don't leave. You look tired. Why don't you just stay the night? You know where your bedroom is." Harry just shook his head and took of the cloak to reveal a smile.

"What was he smiling about?" she asked herself.

"You know that I can't."

"No Harry, I don't know why. Would you care to enlighten me why you can not sleep at your sister's flat?"

His smile was now shown to its full extent. "I have school tomorrow."

Jamie made a mental note to hit her head with a frying pan when he left. "I guess it just slipped my mind." She smiled back at him.

"I really should get going now."

"Uh huh."

"So I'll see you up at the castle soon?"

"Uh huh."

Without another word, Harry was gone. Jamie went back under her warm comforter and silently drifted off to sleep. At this same moment, another boy of sixteen was pacing his room and muttering to himself.

**********

"I can't believe it! I will not, can not, I won't!" Draco Malfoy's usual silvery blond hair was in havoc. To tell the truth, he was a complete utter mess. His hair, that on all occasions was slicked back, was standing up on end. There were black circles under his eyes from lack of sleep, which could have well been a black eye. All he wore was his black silk pajama bottoms; the top lay forgotten on an oak chair. He had been ranting and raving for days on end. The Dark Lord had proclaimed him a Death Eater only a week ago. His first task, to prove himself worthy of such an honor, was to ask none other than his arch nemesis' sister, Jamie Lilith Potter, out. He had refused and said that he'd rather die. But his father had said that he was speaking nonsense and to abide the Dark Lord's orders. It was now the last day before he would return to school and be doomed. Draco had tried to look at the Pros and Cons of the situation but had turned up with nothing.

"Stupid Dark Lord! Thinks he can rule me! Ha!" Draco's stomach then began to twirl. He stopped abruptly and looked at the open door that now showed his mother, a look of deep concern upon her face.

"Are you alright Draco?"

"Fine, mother. Now leave me in peace." Narcissa Malfoy left her son's presence and Draco could hear her head back to her room at the other end of the Manor. He got up to close the door shut when he heard voices out in the hall. He stood where he was and listened intently.

"Where were you yesterday!" That was definitely his father. Draco could tell from the icy tone in his voice. Only he and his father could produce that tone correctly.

"I...I was out." It was a girl's voice. "Jenna," Draco thought. Jenna was his sister that he had only known he had since the beginning of the summer. She had lived as a Muggle for sixteen years of her life. Jenna never really talked about the night of the near fatal incident. Draco always tried to get it out of her but she would always end up in tears.

"Out where?" shouted Lucius.

"Nowhere important." Draco was worried for his sister. This was her first summer at the mansion so she didn't know her father that well. She was in for a big surprise.

"Listen to me girl," he spat. "You will tell me where you were or it will be forced out of you."

Jenna didn't weaken in anyway, as far as Draco could tell. Her voice didn't waver nor did she show any sign of relenting. "She thinks she can be strong but it won't last," Draco whispered to himself.

"I don't have to tell you anything!" Draco heard a deafening slap and then he saw his sister, in robes of deepest green, sweep past his door and down the stairs. Draco went to look out his window. A few moments later, a dark figure was running across the never-ending grounds and it disappeared into the trees. Draco sighed. She would soon regret everything she was doing. Lucius would wait for her to come back and then she'd be sorry. He wished he could help his sister but he had troubles of his own.

**********

A golden sunlight filled Jamie's room, making her soft pale skin glow. She could she the light from the sun dancing across her eyelids, forming pictures in her mind. Jamie opened her eyes and sat up, then leaning against her pillow. She put her arms above her head and closed her eyes trying to remember the wonderful dream that she had been having. She was on the beach, sand between her toes, the gentle waves coming and going on the shore. There was a man behind her, holding her in his strong arms. In front of them was a boy, playing in the sand. His shovel and pail scattered about. Jamie smiled in spite of herself. Then the vision was gone. And all memory of it vanished. Was this what she wanted? A family? But how could that be possible? She was sixteen, not even an adult. She sighed and pulled back the blood red curtains of the four-poster and proceeded to the bathroom to take a shower. She felt very cold under the hot flowing water, a conspiracy that was beyond something she could understand. Jamie quickly tied her hair up into a loose bun, not bothering to dry her hair. She went to her closet and pulled out a maroon no sleeve top and a short blue jean skirt. She then went into the kitchen to grab a quick breakfast before leaving for the Ministry. Only, someone was already in the kitchen, searching for a snack in the fridge. The stranger shut the fridge door and straightened up.

"Jenna? What are you doing here! You have school this year. Don't you remember?" said Jamie exasperated. Jenna was a smart girl from what she knew. Young Miss Malfoy had received an award at Stonewall High of excellence in her studies.

"Oh right," replied Jenna.

"Do you have all you school supplies with you?"

"No. I left them at the Manor. I sent your owl to Draco to explain. I hope you don't mind."

"Not at all. Will Draco be bringing your things then?"

"Yes. I just need to be there by 11:00." Jenna then reached for her left cheek. When she took her hand away Jamie almost screamed. A bluish blob was covering Jenna's whole left side of her cheek.

"What happened to you?"

"Lucius." These words issued from Jenna's mouth with a hint of loathing. Jamie wasn't shocked at this news. She had guessed that it had been her father.

"Did you bring anything here?" she asked.

"No. Nothing."

"Then come with me."

**********

Draco didn't get any sleep that night. He kept thinking about Jamie Potter, the girl who had been tormenting him. He wanted to defy Voldemort but he knew that he would be killed, even though he was the son of Lucius Malfoy. Damn the Dark Lord. As the sun seeped through his window, Draco ran the process through his head.

Step 1- Near the end of dinner, head to the portrait of Lily and James Potter

Step 2- Wait for Jamie to come

Step 3- Invite her to take a walk

Step 4- Head to the big oak tree

Step 5- Ask her out

An easy five step plan. Draco hoped that it would all work out. The only part of the deal he didn't like was the deal itself, if that did make any sense. He didn't like Jamie and he was very sure that she didn't like him. What if she said no? He had never thought of that. But who could say no to Draco Malfoy? He tried to push all his thoughts away from his fate that befell on him and instead started to pack for his sixth year at Hogwarts. Draco usually was neat but today he didn't feel like it. He stuffed his belongings in his trunk and closed it shut. Just then, there was a tapping sound at the window. Draco pulled the latch open and an owl zoomed in. The letter dropped on his head and the owl left as quickly as it came. The letter fell to the floor and Draco scooped it up. It didn't have a seal so he unfolded it.

Draco,

I know that you must have heard the fiasco with Lucius last night. I'm at Jamie's flat. She said

that she'd bring me to Kings Cross so don't worry about that. I was wondering if you could

somehow sneak my things and my trunk along. I didn't bring anything with me. My trunk

is already packed and Snowflake is in her cage. I hope that isn't too much trouble.

I love you lots,

Jenna

"She owes me big time," he said softly. He went to her room, grabbed the Invisibility Cloak from in her trunk and placed it over the trunk and Snowflake. He walked down the many stairs and passages until he reached the front hall. Nobody was awake yet considering it was quite early still. Draco went into the kitchen and pulled up a chair. He leaned back and awaited his mother's cooking.
