Chapter 7: Contradictory-Part 2
The sound of running water was all she could hear. It blocked out the laughter of those down below. It blocked the creaking of the old wood floors. It blocked her thoughts from actually being heard. And that was the point. To rid herself of the unpleasant memories and the new feelings creeping up on her.
Jenna her face buried in the sink. She was in the process of scrubbing out her mouth. She roughly scrapped her tooth brush against her tongue and teeth. She was brushing so hard that her gums began to bleed. She had already rinsed with both water and mouth wash, but she could still taste Draco.
I can't believe he had the nerve to just grab me like that! Like it was his God given right to be able to fondle me whenever he pleases! Jenna thought with disbelief. She thought she handled the situation rather well despite her confusion and rage. Just moments ago she had placed a spell on Draco that was sure to teach him not to mess with her again. Jenna had been oh-so-tempted to hit him, but she knew this would be much better. Physically hurting Draco was good, but publicly embarrassing him and making him a laughing stock was better. Jenna knew that Draco prided himself on being "classy" and "respectable". Taking that away from him was the best revenge.
But now Jenna had no idea what to do with herself. She had just had one of the most awful days of her life. Not only had Draco invaded her space, but Harry had taken it upon himself to play the saint. He had tried to make Jenna into the bad guy. So what if she was rude from time to time, Harry was never a pleasure himself. But he tried to act like he was doing everything in his power to "save" her from the horrible person she was. And the truth was he had only approached her twice. In the beginning of the year and today. He really had to get over himself.
What does he know anyway, she thought bitterly. What do either of them know. Both Draco and Harry acted as if they knew her. While their opinions of her differed, they both continued their crusade to change her. Draco wanted to turn her towards Dark magic and be her partner in crime. He pretended like she was exactly like him. Harry, on the other hand, wanted her to turn towards the light. Be the good little girl he thought was hidden inside her. He pretend like she was exactly like him. But both boys were wrong. They were more like each other than like Jenna.
Jenna soon realized that the running water wasn't masking her thoughts anymore and that she would never get rid of the Draco taste. She turned off the water and slinked over to her bed in the dorms. She sat on the edge staring off into space before giving a sigh of surrender and laying down. Under her, the blankets were soft and comforting. She considered pulling them over her body, but was too lazy to move. She didn't even bother to change into her pajamas. It was still early. Probably about 8 â˜o' clock and nobody else was up in the dorms. But Jenna didn't feel like facing anyone at the moment so she stayed there, curled up in a ball all alone. She didn't want to face herself either. The only thing left for her to do was sleep.
The next morning Jenna was awakened by the rustling of the other girls. That's how it usually was. No one poked her or yelled to wake her up; she just listened for signs of their preparations for breakfast. Jenna pulled back the curtain that closed off her bed from the others and sat up. She rubbed the sleepy sand out of her eyes and yawned.
Stretching, she emerged from her isolated cave and dragged herself to the bathroom. After brushing her teeth(carefully as not to reopen the cuts on her gums) and splashing water on her face, she returned to the side of her bed. She fumbled to open her chest full of clothes. Not caring in the slightest, she pulled out whatever outfit was on top and dressed quickly and tossed her robes over it. She was gathering her books when she noticed that Hermione was watching her. Jenna stood still and gazed back at her. Hermione looked away immediately and pretended to be getting ready. Jenna was not in the mood for games.
"If you wanna say something to me just say it, Granger." Hermione stopped cold. Her eyes darted around nervously as she searched for a response.
"N-no. I was just wondering why you had gone to sleep in your day clothes that's all."
"Well, it's none of your damn business, but if you must know I was tired and didn't feel like changing." Jenna didn't really know why she had told Hermione this, probably to stop her from looking at her like that. But Hermione bravely ventured forward.
"You must have gone to bed really early because when I came up here at 9 to get a book you were already asleep."
"Yeah so what? I had Quidditch practice and it wore me out." Jenna was getting impatient, with both Hermione and herself. Her tone had become more harsh causing Lavender Brown and Parvati Patil, her other dormmates, to turn in their direction.
"Oh, yeah Harry told me you were.....um doing lots of stunts at practice."
"Why the hell was Harry talking to you about me? What did he say?" Jenna was suddenly interested in what the brainiac had to say. It was her chance to find out exactly what Harry thought of her. But Hermione didn't seem willing to divulge any information. Jenna saw that she was trying to come up with a lie so she gave up. "You know what? Just forget it. And make sure you tell Potter to stop talking about me behind my back. If he has something to say he should be man enough to say it to my face." With that Jenna left behind an unsure Hermione, not to mention Lavender and Parvati, and resumed her journey to the Great Hall for breakfast.
Once Jenna entered the noisy hall she was greeted by a familiar song. She looked around the room zeroing in on the source of the music. She smiled happily at the sight of Draco sitting at the Slytherin table hunched over his plate in shame. His face was practically buried in his eggs. There was a noticeable amount of laughter coming from all directions even the Slytherins themselves. Ahh the taste of victory.
With her mood uplifted considerably, Jenna settled into her own seat and began to eat her breakfast. She was no longer sitting and the end of the table alone, but near Angelina and the rest of the team. They had taken her under their wing within the past few days. It was a little awkward the sudden attention, but Jenna found it a lot better than sitting in solitude.
Her plans for the day were sure to be less exciting than yesterday. Jenna wasn't sure if that was a good or bad thing. She had a few classes and Quidditch practice. She was pretty sure that Harry would keep his distance though. They had made a silent agreement yesterday to ignore each other's existence. Jenna found it a little difficult with him sitting only a few seats down. She raised her eyes to him for a moment and found he was looking right back. They held this gaze for a moment before returning to their separate meals.
Jenna had no time to analyze the moment because it was then that a whooshing sound was heard over head. The hard beating of wings became for clear as the owls approached. Jenna watched as hundreds of birds came swooping from the sky delivering letters to their respective owners. She took note of Harry's own snowy owl before realizing that she had mail of her own.
Jenna did not have an owl so she figured it must be one of the school's. Probably the one she had sent to her mother a little over a week ago. It seemed as though she now had a response from her family. She untied the letter from the bird's leg and gave it a pat before it fluttered off to rest.
Upon opening the envelope, Jenna discovered more than one letter, 4 to be exact. One from her family and one from each of her best friends back home: Dina, Jennie, and Amber. She read her mother's note first finding that they had repainted her room blue like she asked 5 years ago(they decide to paint my room after I've moved, she thought amusedly). Her mother also explained that she had her friends write Jenna letters and then give them her mom so she could send them out at once. This also helped hide the fact to her friends that there was no address for them to send the mail to.
Jenna carefully unfolded her letter from Dina. She talked a lot about school and her baby-sitting job. She even mentioned something about taking dance class. Jenna was happy to see Dina do something so outgoing. Amber's note contained detailed descriptions of all the guys she was into as well as the contents of her wardrobe. Jennie had lots to say about being bored as usual and plenty of sarcastic remarks to cause Jenna to burst into a fit of giggles. Her housemates stared at her like she was crazy, but she ignored them. One thing all the letters had in common were heartfelt messages of how much they missed her. Jenna's heart became sore and longed to be home having a massive sleepover with her "sisters". Again she felt the emotion watering her eyes. She successfully blinked it back as she stuffed the notes back into the envelope.
Luckily all traces of sadness diminished before she felt the tap on her shoulder. Jenna knew who it was already without having to turn around. She heard the music a mile away. "Malfoy," she said lazily. Then she stood up and faced him. The boy did not look happy. His arms were crossed and his gray eyes were icy. Not that she expected any less. "Can I help you with anything?"
"You know damn well why I'm here so don't patronize me," he shouted trying to make his voice heard over the whines on the singers that were chanting lyrics around him. But Jenna persisted to annoy him anyway.
"Why Malfoy, what ever could you mean," she asked in an innocent voice. He glared evilly at her as she fixed her face in an angelic position. When she didn't react he took it as a sign that he'd have to play her way. He grunted impatiently.
"How the hell to I get this crap to stop playing," he asked with a note of irritability.
"I'm sorry there, Malfoy. I wish I could help you out, but you see, I set the song to play 1,000 times and unfortunately it has to run its course." Draco's eyes grew wide with anger.
"Don't lie! This is your spell, surely you can remove it!"
"There's nothing I can do my dear boy. I apologize profusely." She could no longer hold back her laughter. Draco was steaming and it was absolutely hysterical. He stood there for minute before whipping around and stomping back to his seat. Once he was seated again, he looked over at her. She waved playfully before throwing him a smile of triumph. She had got the best of old Malfoy again. Winner and still champion!
Jenna got such a kick out of Draco. He really was quite the character. Always so high in himself, thinking he can get anything he wants when really he was nothing but a conceited little boy with a rich daddy. Jenna loved playing games with the kid's mind. He always got so confused and embarrassed. And angry. That was the best. He always looked so cute when he was mad.
Wait a minute. Did I just say that Draco Malfoy was cute? No, of course not. But ... I did, didn't I? Must have been a momentary lapse. I couldn't have meant it. Could I?
Jenna stared blankly into space trying to sort out her thoughts. There was no way she could find Draco attractive. He was a repulsive, disgusting, arrogant little rat. Yes, Jenna was quite sure that she hated Malfoy with all her heart, but....none of this had anything to do with whether or not she found him good looking. Malfoy's gross, she thought. He has no muscles at all....well he is very well defined even if there is a lack of mass. Ok, but he has a rather pointy face, but....he had a strong jaw line that complimented his structure nicely. Alright his hair, the way it's slicked back...it's sort of rebellious. That's always good. Fine but his beady little eyes were very...intense, sensual even.
This can't be right, I can't have a thing for...Draco Malfoy! Jenna spun around in her seat again to catch a glimpse of the blonde. He sat there proudly trying to look as if he owned the place even though he was being laughed at. Prick. But her worst fears were confirmed. She found that Draco had the bad boy charm. He was even down right sexy sitting there. Oh bloody hell!
He was doing 8-0 on the freeway
In the 6 double O, pumpin Isley
He was gettin kinda close, kinda touch-ay
Cuz he had a little too much Hennessey
He told me that he wanna go home, with me up on the hill to my condo
Told me he would keep it all on the low-low
But I told him, "boo, I don't really know though"
He got closer to me...it started gettin deep
He had me in a zone when he started to show me things
I never saw before
Baby was smooth but I knew it was game
Hell-of-a cool but you men are the same
The way he licked his lips and touched my hips
I knew that he was slick
You make me sick
I want you and I'm hatin it
Got me lit like a candlestick
Get too hot when you touch the tip, I'm feelin it, I gotta getta grip
And it's drivin me crazy baby don't you quit
Can't get enough of it
You got me goin again
Baby, you got me goin again
You make me sick
In the 6 now, so hot
Gotta pull all the windows down
Eyes lead and I'm thinkin bout the sheets now
Wonderin should I really take it there now
He told me he would make it worth it
Again, how many times have I heard this
Kinda funny, but I wasn't even nervous
All his slick-ass lines were kinda workin
I felt my knees get weak...his body was callin me
Just couldn't take the heat
Anyway it was 2 or 3, I had to get off the streets
Baby was cool but I knew it was game
he was too smooth to be screamin my name
Even though we made the best of it
I still told him this...
You make me sick
I want you and I'm hatin it
Got me lit like a candlestick
Get too hot when you touch the tip, I'm feelin it, I gotta getta grip
And it's drivin me crazy baby don't you quit
Can't get enough of it
You got me goin again
Baby, you got me goin again
You make me sick

"Ten points from Gryffindor for your laziness and lack of concentration, Potter! Maybe you should take a page from Mr. Malfoy's book who made a fine potion even with the distraction of that wretched music." Snape was scolding Harry as usual even though he did nothing wrong. But that's what Snape did. Since he was the head of Slytherin, he favored the students in his house, like Malfoy, and punished those in other houses, like Harry. He loved to punish Harry. Snape had extra loathing for him due to the fact that he had conflicts with Harry's father when they went to school together.
It wasn't like the Slytherins were angels, Snape just gave them privileges. Take Malfoy for example. He does well in school, is rather intelligent in fact, but causes more problems than anyone else in the school (except for Jenna ). He picked fights, put people down all the time, and still found ways to pin it on other people (with the help of Snape). Harry didn't get it. How Malfoy always got away with it or with only a light punishment. But he was finally getting it back. Like today, Malfoy was sitting here in Potions class with a curse that played the same song over and over...and over. Harry first noticed it this morning at breakfast when Malfoy came walking in trying to ignore everyone's laughter. What he had done this time to retrieve such a swell gift, Harry didn't know, but Malfoy did deserve it. It really was a sad sight. It was like watching the downfall of a superstar. It's so pitiful you almost feel sorry for them. Almost.
The one behind Malfoy's problems these days was the Wicked Witch herself. Harry never knew what to make of Jenna. Ever since her arrival she's been a human contradiction. One-second she was pissing Harry off and the next, she was making him die with laughter. Jenna was awful to Harry, but was worse to Malfoy. That's why Harry could sometimes tolerate her. She paid Malfoy back for all the terrible things he had done. She humiliated him and yelled at him.
But she did this to Harry as well. She had never cast a spell on him or anything, but she was just as mean. She looked down on him and pretended as if she was God's gift, kind of like Malfoy. But then she'd turn around and act like a normal person. She was actually very cordial and polite to their Quidditch teammates, especially the captain Alicia and her beater partner Fred.
What was even weirder was what happened on the Quidditch pitch yesterday. They had a huge blowout where some very nasty things were said. But somehow they had made a pact to be more civil to each other. Harry didn't know how it happened. They were just staring at each other and the agreement was just sort of made; they were now going to treat each other like equals, show some respect. Jenna was staying true to it so far. At breakfast she just looked at him like a normal person would who was just passing by, no scowl on her face like usual.
"Mr. Potter, you are giving me great pleasure today. Here you are floating in your thoughts and not paying attention. 10 more points from Gryffindor." Harry grumbled angrily before checking his notes and completing his potion.
School ended uneventfully, to Harry's relief. He headed straight for the common room after his classes and right up to his dorm. He didn't want to encounter or talk to anyone, friend or otherwise. He just wanted to sleep. The past couple days had drained him of all energy. Thankfully, Quidditch practice had been canceled due to the fact that Ravenclaw had also booked the field that afternoon. Alicia, who was confident in the team, decided they could do without a day of practice and graciously handed it over to the Ravenclaws. Once Harry was comfortable in his bed, he fell into a deep sleep.
He jolted awake sometime later. Harry sat up and blinked sleepily. It took a few moments for his eyes to adjust. When the room finally came into view he saw that he had missed dinner. Many of his dorm mates including Ron were already tucked into their beds. Harry now wide awake crawled out of the bed and slipped on his shoes.
Making his way down the staircase, Harry heard a rustle of noise below. Apparently it wasn't that late as there were still some students awake. Once downstairs he saw that the room consisted mostly of 6th and 7th years as well as some younger students cramming in homework and studying. Hermione wasn't there to Harry's surprise. She often stayed up late to prepare for the next day's classes.
Harry did not feel up to hanging out alone in the common room so he continued out in to the hall. After passing through the portrait hole, he began to wander down the practically empty corridors. A strand of his sloppy black hair flopped into his eyes. He pushed it back carelessly. Harry didn't know where he was going. At first he was going to head down to the kitchen to steal some food, but quickly realized that he was not hungry. Next he thought of going back to the common room to do his unfinished homework, obviously dreading a scolding from Hermione, but then decided against it. He even considered going to visit Hagrid, but then realized that he may already be asleep himself.
Through his thoughts Harry had found his way outdoors. The night was cold and dry. Winter was approaching fast. The air around him was frigid and made his hairs stand on end. It wasn't as dark out as he expected. The moon gave enough light for him to see. Harry watched the ground as he walked. The green was fading from the grass. A small bug scurried past his feet. Harry's mind was the clearest it had been in days. The sleep had really rejuvenated him and the fresh air only accentuated his clarity.
Harry turned his head up towards the sky. The moon was bright and reflected off his round glasses. Gray clouds billowed in front of the moon creating a mystical affect. The wind suddenly began to blow. The noise rose around him. But Harry realized that he felt no wind and the noise was growing louder. He began to search around him for the source and found it in the sky.
High up in the air, someone was floating in the sky, flying in circles. He focused his eyes and caught sight of a broom. Who would be flying so late at night, he thought. Harry moved closer to the person in the sky, taking many long strides. The figure above became less fuzzy and he noticed it was a Gryffindor; he could see the red and gold Quidditch robes they were adorning, but couldn't make out any features. Just then a ball was seen whizzing through the sky. A Bludger. Fred? Why would Fred need practice? Harry was now almost right below the figure. It was then he finally caught sight of the flow of hair trailing behind the rider. Jenna. Yet Harry found this even more odd than if it had been Fred. Here she was in the middle of the night zooming around on her broom chasing Bludgers for no reason at all.
But she had a reason. There's always a reason. She was practicing. Harry was instantly confused. Jenna never seemed to care about Quidditch or anything magical. She didn't care about the team. Yet the girl was right in front of him practicing her position as Beater. She probably just cares about winning, he thought. She hates to lose. But Harry knew that he was wrong. She wouldn't waste any extra time practicing for something just to show off, especially if she didn't care about it.
Harry began to study her movements. She was fluid and solid in her flying. Her balance was perfect and she always calculated her blows to the Bludgers exactly. Her turns were tight and her speed rivaled Harry's. She had many tricks up her sleeve he saw. Flying came casually to her. She really didn't need any practice at all. Jenna was surprising him yet again. He had thought she cared about no one and nothing but herself, but now he was questioning his theory.
Jenna suddenly skidded to a stop above him. Harry thought he had been caught, but she did not look down. Instead she sat on her Firebolt in the middle of the sky and stared out into the nothingness before her. Harry watched her carefully. Her reddish brown hair was blowing lightly around her face. A loose strand blew into her face and she quickly tucked it back behind her ear, much like Harry had done earlier. The moon was behind her and the light glided around her body majestically. Her figure became a silhouette. Harry could still see her face though. It was dark and melancholy. Like a part of her was reaching for something too far to grasp. Harry knew he was now witnessing a very private and vulnerable moment.
Before he could finish his interpretation, she broke out of her trance and kick started her broom again. Knowing that he had already seen too much, Harry turned around and headed back into the castle. It was much later now. It seemed like he had only been gone minutes, but it was much longer. Harry decided it was finally time to go back to Gryffindor Tower. As he approached the Fat Lady, he whispered the password and entered. The common room was now deserted as the rest of the students had gone up to bed awhile ago. Harry was again sleepy himself and wound his way up the stairs.
The dorm was far darker than the rest of the school and he had to wait for his eyes to adjust again. This time it took much longer. Harry rubbed his green eyes roughly and tried to bring the room into focus. The beds and trunks drifted into view slowly. Harry started to walk over to his own bed, ready to crash for the night. He then clumsily tripped over an object on the floor. He swore quietly and stood up, rubbing his elbow. It was then he noticed that the curtain separating Seamus' bed from everyone was wide open. Curious, he silently crept over to the sleeping boy. Harry pulled back the sheets and blinked, not believing what he saw.
Seamus was there, sleeping peacefully alright, but he did not look normal. The boy was drained of all color. And I mean literally. He wasn't pale or sickly looking, he just had no color. Even his clothes were a benign black and white. His usually tanned skin was gray and papery. He looked like someone out of a 50's black and white television show. And Seamus didn't seem to know anything was wrong.
Author notes: The song in this chapter is Pink's "You Make Me Sick" off her album Can't Take Me Home and it's also on the Save the Last Dance Soundtrack.
Ok about this chapter. It follows the same theme as the last chapter, hence the name. Some moments of contradiction are:
Jenna's new feelings for Draco, Harry's feelings for Jenna, and obviously just the way Jenna acts. She's hard and cold most of the time, but there are a few rare moments of sensitivity in both Jenna(letter's from friends) and Harry's(the broom incident) perspectives in this chap.
Also, Seamus is not sick. Something has happened to him. He is in black and white. Think of the movie Pleasantville. Like that. I know it's a little confusing. I couldn't think of a way to make it come across clearly. Sorry!
Upcoming chapter: Well, lots of new developments to explore. there will probably be an encounter with Draco and Jenna. We'll see. And what happened to Seamus will be explained. At least partly. Hint- It has something to do with the dream. It will be up soon. I promise.
Future: Expect some cool and cruel things to happen between Jenna and Draco! Harry and Jenna will have to meet up again. There will be a Quidditch match but not for a couple more chapters. And no I will not tell you whether or not Jenna and Harry will ever be friends or what their connection is. That will come towards the end. Sorry! lol
