- Author's Note:
- This takes place in year five at Hogwarts. Story line is my own original idea, and some characters (Like Jenna) are my own creation as well. Please don't steal. Enjoy the story!
Dammit, Dammit, Dammit!, Jenna thought obviously bubbling with anger. I can't believe I did that! How stupid can I get? As she sat in a chair in the empty common room, her mind was still whirling from her encounter with Harry earlier that day. The way she acted, how stupid she sounded, that awful look he gave her. A look somewhat filled with...concern, if she was not mistaken. Concern? Why the hell would he be concerned about me? A little voice in her mind answered her right back. Because, you idiot, you stood there gawking at him for 5 minutes and then proceeded to fumble through some very unintelligent words. That's totally unlike you.
But it was like her in reality. She often made a fool of herself at home. Very willingly most of the time too. She was always the one making jokes and reaching for laughs. Now, Jenna found it hard to recall that girl, the one she used to be. She was losing herself and very quickly. She's been there two months and already this place had taken a serious toll. But did it have to be Harry that saw me like that? Why did he have to be the one who caught one of my few moments of weakness? Jenna would have been more content with Draco seeing her. Wait scratch that. The notion immediately swept through her mind that Harry would be much more forgiving than Draco. The white haired rat would definitely use that moment against her, but Harry wouldn't. It was just part of each of their natures. How she knew this, she had no clue, but she felt very strongly that it was the truth.
Still it didn't make her any less embarrassed or upset. Her stomach began to churn with nausea. Jenna immediately became scared and disgusted with herself. Why am I getting so worked up over useless Harry Potter? Her disgust quickly melded into fury for letting this happen. She felt a burning pain rise up in her throat and her first reaction was to scream and break everything in the room. But no, there's a more productive way to handle this. She found that being angry at Harry was far easier and that's exactly what she did. She made Harry the target of her hatred instead of herself. That little jerk had no right to look at me like that! I should have flung the skinny four eyed git across the room! Wait, did I really just say "git"? Oh sweet bejeezes, I've been in England way too long!
Shaking her head, half in amusement and half in distaste, she finally removed herself from the comfy, white chair she had been glued to for the past hour. She had Quidditch practice with her favorite person in a few minutes. Oh joy. Their first practice together actually. This should be interesting, she thought as she snatched her broom from upstairs. She had acquired a rather good broomstick. The best actually. A Firebolt. Draco had been enjoyably pissed when he found out. Harry however had barely reacted; he simply asked how she got it. She had replied with some nasty comment, one she couldn't recall at the moment. In reality, it was quite a simple answer. While the Firebolt was expensive here in the wizarding world, in American money standards it wasn't that bad. When they exchanged money at Gringotts, she realized she was pretty well off as a witch. It was a far cry from her mediocre status in the US of A. She wasn't poor or anything, but lower middle class, I guess you could say.
So here she was with a Firebolt walking down the corridors of Hogwarts. For a second she felt like a normal student, like she fit there. Just a regular witch on her way to play a regular witch sport with other regular witches and wizards. The moment was gone as rapidly as it came. And she was sure it would be a long, long time before she felt that way again.
Somehow through all these thoughts she had made it to the Quidditch pitch where all the other Gryffindor players awaited. They stood around as if they were looking forward to her arrival, all except Harry of course. Angelina beamed at her as Jenna made her way across the field, pulling her gold and maroon robes over her shoulders. The rest of the team looked at her excitedly. Harry just avoided her eyes. In her opinion, he seemed just as embarrassed by this afternoons events. Trying not to even think of Harry, she greeted the Gryffindors, "Hey guys, ready to see some awesome flying?"
They nodded in anticipation and mounted their brooms. Obviously, they hadn't taken her remark as an insult. She was glad; it wasn't meant to be. Jenna had taken a vow to try to be more friendly to her fellow housemates, especially those on her team. She found that she rather enjoyed the way they had treated her yesterday when inviting her to join the team. Not that she was about to go out of her way to please anyone. She liked being feared too much.
Soon they were in the air, floating the way butterflies did. It was a refreshing feeling, it made Jenna feel free and cleared her mind of all concerns. Angelina was soon yelling instructions, telling them to line up as if playing an actual game. Jenna took her place not far from Fred. Angelina let the balls loose and soon the Chasers were practicing plays and making passes. They were chucking the Quaffle at George, the new Keeper. He was surprisingly good, especially after being a Beater for so long. Jenna watched as he made a dive to save a ball thrown by Katie Bell.
Fred then circled around Jenna and shouted some words of encouragement. Time to party, she thought as she tilted her broom to the right. She quickly spotted a Bludger zooming at Chaser Kelly Osland, a sixth year who had just started playing now that Alicia Spinnett had graduated. Jenna leaned down on her broom and shot forward with great speed. The ball was coming up on Kelly fast, but Jenna was faster. While Kelly took a shot at George, Jenna made a skilled hit at the Bludger and it rocketed in the opposite direction. A cheer went up from her team. She had to struggle to keep herself from turning red. Fred then made his way over and slapped her hand enthusiastically, while George screamed something about making the right decision about switching positions. Geez, I hit the ball once and you'd think I'd just won the World Cup for them or something. Despite herself she smiled with satisfaction. She was definitely enjoying this.
Jenna readied herself again as the training continued. And it went well. Very well. She didn't miss a single Bludger and each time she got promising applause from her teammates. She hadn't even noticed Harry, until he shot like a bullet after the Snitch. He caught it naturally, and another cheer rang out.
"Great job everyone! This was an amazing practice. This year's team has the potential to be the best ever! See you guys same time tomorrow!" Angelina yelled happily. They all landed then and helped capture and secure the balls.
Jenna was just about to turn and head towards the school when something smacked into her with great force. She stumbled back a little and saw that it was Harry who had run into her. "Yo Potter, watch what you're doing! Is your eyesight really that bad?," she spit out coldly. He just stayed silent and stared deep into her eyes. For a moment she was mesmerized by Harry's alarmingly green eyes. She then shifted uncomfortably under his gaze. "Stop looking at me like that!"
Harry didn't flinch, but he did speak up, "What happened today in the hall?"
Jenna stood stupefied. She hadn't expected that reaction, especially not so bluntly. She guessed she was just used to the way Draco danced around a subject. She quickly recomposed herself and replied, "A mere moment of curiosity, Potter. Don't take it to heart. Won't happen again."
"Don't lie. Something was wrong. I saw it," he stated. So she was right. That was concern on his face today. She wasn't sure of how to respond though. So she just tried to look casual and annoyed at the same time.
"Why to you care?"
"That's exactly what I was going to ask you." Stop looking at me like that, she thought angrily. This boy really had a piercing gaze. Not an angry one, just a gaze as though he were looking into your soul and was trying to read it. Harry stood there patiently, waiting for her answer.
"Are you expecting a response from me? Well, it's not gonna happen. At least not until you answer me first," Jenna said. Harry shrugged his shoulders. For a second she thought he would just turn around and leave it at that, but no. The little pain had to open his mouth.
"Well, I saw the way you looked today, not at all like your usual wretched self. So I figured something had to be wrong. I saw it in your eyes, just like I do now."
Jenna was suddenly enraged, not at the insult he had thrown her way, but at his last remark. The one about her eyes. How could he have seen it? Why was he looking in the first place? Does he know what I'm thinking now? Jenna was now very aware of her body. She fidgeted as Harry continued to glower at her. Dammit Potter! Not only was he pretending like he knew her, but he was too close to the truth for comfort. For a brief moment she was tempted to reveal how she had the exact same dream as he did. And how much that creepy thing had frightened her. But she restrained herself. There's no way she's ever let Harry know she had been scared. She didn't know what to say so she did the only thing she could think of. She reached over and violently smacked Harry upside the head.
He looked dazed for a moment and then his face twisted in resentment, "Fine! I was just trying to be nice! I thought something might actually have gotten through that thick hide of yours and reached the minuscule heart you have buried somewhere. But obviously not, so I guess I'll just go." His words were emotionless and filled with hatred at the same time.
"Finally your getting the hint! You know not everyone thinks highly of you Potter, so stop acting like your opinion of me matters to me in the slightest."
"Why don't you stop pretending like your words hurt me? Look, I'm tired of putting myself on the line here. I'm not gonna bother with trying to change you anymore. It obviously is an impossible feat. All I ask of you now is to respect me. To stop treating me like scum. You're no better than me."
Jenna was now fervid with rage. "What? You're the one who needs to stop acting like your better than everyone else! Just because you have an ugly little scar on your big ass head doesn't put you above anyone!"
"I didn't say it did!" They had both been screaming intensely, but they now fell silent. There was nothing else to be said. Both of them knew that, so they just stared each other down, eyes beating into each other like laser beams. Harry broke first. He looked like he was about to spit on her, but he just whipped around and stalked off. Jenna was left searing mad and feeling as if she had just been violated.
We don't have to speak
We don't have to shake no hands
And your eyes aint gotta float my way
You don't have to use my name
In your conversation
We don't have to agree and
You don't have like me
And its alright with me
But as long as I'm around
You better make sure you respect me
You aint gotta like me
Its alright with me
But as long as I'm around
Make sure you respect me
You don't have to smile
You don't have to like my style
I don't care what you think
Just as long as you know
I ain't no game
So don't play wit' me (Ooooh)
Just watch what you say
When you're talking to me
Cause I don't want to break out
Inside and have to say
You don't have to use my name
In your conversation
We don't have to agree and
You don't have to like me
And its alright with me (No No)
But as long as I'm around
You better make sure you respect me (Yea Yea)
You ain't gotta like me
Its alright with me (Its Alright)
But as long as I am around (Ooohh)
You better make sure you respect me
"Get your big arse out of my face, you prat!" Draco was having a fit right in the middle of the Slytherin common room. It was something he did often. But if you had to live with those people you'd understand his reasons for annoyance. His complaint at the moment was Goyle. The dumb lutz had spilt a drink on the floor near Draco's feet, splashing the red liquid on his shoes. If that wasn't enough, Goyle had bent down right in front of Malfoy, leaving his butt literally in Draco's face.
At Draco's rant, Goyle grunted and turned his body in the opposite direction. Draco just shuddered with disgust. Goyle may be his friend, but the guy was still quite hideous. Last thing Draco ever wanted to see was Goyle's oversized behind.
The rest of his housemates were being equally irritating at the moment. Crabbe was playing a game of wizard's chess with Blaise Zambini. It was really an amusing site. He just sat there scratching his greasy head like an ape with lice. The blank look on his rough skinned face usually would have made Draco chuckle, but he was in no mood. And earlier in the afternoon Pansy Parkinson had tried to grope Malfoy. She had flitted over to him, asking something about the chemistry of Potions and then segwayed into the "chemistry" between the two of them. Following this she had run her bony little hands up his chest. It goes without saying that he shoved the girl away roughly. Just because they went to the Yule Ball together last year, it meant nothing. He only went with her because their families knew each other and there was no one else he wanted to go with.
Besides, he hated to be touched. There's only one person I wouldn't mind rubbing up against me, Draco thought with a faint smile curling on his lips. Yes, Jenna was definitely someone he would allow to touch him, in fact he'd be more than happy to oblige. He started to think of what it would be like to just lean in and kiss her pouty red lips. It was something he daydreamed about often.
There was just something about that girl he was attracted to. Maybe it was her striking looks. She wasn't overly gorgeous, just very pretty and...different. He remembered once seeing her roaming the halls late at night in her Muggle clothes. She was wearing baggy plaid pajama bottoms and some sort of jersey (American football? Or the one on the ice maybe. What was it called? Hockey?) that hung loosely off her shoulder. Her hair was pulled up in a careless knot on the top of her head. Rebellious strands escaped the bun and hung around her face. She hadn't seen him as he had darted behind a statue at her arrival, but he remembered the image very clearly. He thought she had an exotic beauty in that moment. Something far from most other girls. Standing there in the oversized clothes, she would seem disheveled or even somewhat boyish to anyone else. But to Draco, in that moment she was the epitome of femininity and elegance. Just the way the shirt hung on her and how it complimented her personality. Draco had never seen anyone look so appealing.
But looks couldn't be all that attracted him to her. No, there was definitely more. Much more. Maybe it was her power. She was like the symbol of strength in this school. There was never a moment were the girl showed weakness. In every conversation she had something witty to say and in every argument she had a fitting retort. The confidence in her walk echoed control and superiority. The smoldering look she always shot from her smokey gray eyes burned her victim and assured her dominance. And who could forget the actual physical power she possessed. Draco couldn't. He always picture her standing on the tables tossing dishes the night of her arrival to Hogwarts.
Still there was another factor in his obsession. One he couldn't pin point. It had been pissing him off all day too. That was why he was in a bad mood now. He just couldn't figure Jenna out. No matter how hard he tried, there was always still some mystery behind her coy smile that Draco couldn't uncover.
He hadn't had many chances lately anyway. He had barely seen her, much to his dismay. With the exception of yesterday on the field, he had a small amount of run ins with her. Every time it was as if she had less patience for him. All he got from her now was the occasional icy stare or fiery remark and she would keep on walking. This annoyed Draco more than anything she could say to him. It was like she saw him as inferior. Him! A Malfoy! It was absurd! That's why he had been honestly pleased by yesterday's events even if his ribs were still a little sore. At least she hadn't ignored him.
But sitting around in the common room was driving the Slytherin even more mad. His thoughts were eating him up and the surrounding noise of his housemates was infuriating. He pulled himself off the olive colored sofa and headed toward the exit. His goonies, Crabbe and Goyle, attempted to follow him, but Draco waved them off.
Once out into the open halls, his mind cleared a little. He was still far from understanding anything about Jenna, but at least there was no more background music of annoying Slytherins. The halls were mainly empty. Classes were over now. Most people were in one of two places: the library (dorks) or their own common rooms. Draco knew Jenna was in neither. She had Quidditch practice at the moment. Her first. So she was outside on the pitch. With Harry. Draco suddenly felt a flare of hatred for the boy, which was not unusual just no expected. Draco quickly realized that he was jealous of Harry just because he was with Jenna. Ugh, something is definitely wrong when I get envious of that stupid git, Draco thought with discontent.
Draco was now turning a corner in the endless halls of Hogwarts School fighting to rid himself of all the emotions that filled him. He wasn't used to them. He only knew the simple ones. Anger, hatred, vengefulness, amusement, and satisfaction. Lately new feelings had crept inside, much to Draco's horror. Some such as obsession, passion, lust, admiration, respect, and now envy were soiling him. He had had interests before, but nothing enraptured him like Jenna. He's cared about things before, but none like Jenna. He had wanted things before, but none like Jenna. He had looked up to people before, but none like Jenna. He had been mad when people had things he didn't, but was never jealous, not until Jenna. It all came back to her. One stupid girl was wrecking everything and he hated her for it (or at least he tried to; it just didn't work).
He was so wrapped up in his own inner angst that he didn't hear the swing of the door in front of him or the low mutters of an upset girl. At least not until he crashed into her. Upon contact, she was lit with fury.
"What is with you people today!?! Can't any of you walk straight!?!" Draco was about to responded bitterly until he looked up and recognized her as the girl who was torturing his mind. Jenna was standing before him in her Quidditch robes, which were partly open, and was dusting herself off hastily. She was mumbling something again and looking as if she would stomp on the next person who dared to address her. She raised her head suddenly, and her face was full with resentment as she noticed Draco.
"What did I expect? Should have known it was you," she said bitterly. Draco watched as she finished removing her robes and revealed another one of her Muggle outfits. This time she was sporting a pair of form fitting jeans, slightly faded, and a long sleeve black shirt. It was made of cloth covered in a mesh material and emblazoned across the front were the words "I Love Rock" and a small picture of the British flag. This surprised Draco. After all her talk about hating England and wanting to go home, she still wore the flag like it was nothing. Yep, Draco didn't get this girl at all.
"Why? Did you cop a feel of my chest and recognize it's curves from the day on field?" Draco smirked suggestively at the Gryffindor. Her face twisted awkwardly for a second, as though she were about to hurl, and then returned to the expected grimace.
"Don't flatter yourself, Draco. There's not a single muscle on your puny excuse for a body." Draco stepped back as if slapped. It was not her words that dazed him, but the way she said his name. She called him Draco. Barely anyone called him Draco. He was always Malfoy. People always referred to him by his last name because it was what struck fear into their hearts. Draco was too informal, too casual, too...personal. He tried to recall whether or not Jenna had always used his first name. He quickly realized that she had, and began to wonder why he'd never noticed it before. Why it had never bothered him before.
Coming back to reality, he saw Jenna staring at him expectantly. He gathered himself rapidly. "Oh you really think your childish insult hurt me? Please! What you say means shit to me. I'm a Malfoy! I'm a God damn legacy at this school! I hold more power than you'll ever have," he shot back more indignantly than he meant to.
But Jenna barely seemed irked by this. "Oh really? You think you have power? You have nothing but your last name! People don't respect you, they hate you. Not because your scary, but because your an asshole! So what if your father has money or connections, that doesn't mean your worth a damn. But me, I have real power. People fear me. They run at the sight of me, like I was the plague! And they respect me because of this power. They know if they stepped out of line I could take the down in seconds, wand or no wand. Now that's power." She stood inches from Draco's face. She hadn't yelled those words; she'd whispered them into Draco's ear with a tone of venom in her voice. She was breathing heavily, as though her anger was making her heart beat too fast.
Draco was breathing heavily as well, but for different reasons. Being so close to her was making his pulse race. When she spoke those words, he could feel her breath blowing into his ear so gently. It drove him wild. Her look of evil and hatred was as sultry as it was menacing. Her eyes were narrowed, slightly reminiscent of Draco's usual gaze, and her lips were pursed tightly shut. Her words affected him just as much as her features. What she said was true, though he'd never admit it to her. But it was like she saw a different Draco, the weak Draco, below his last name. This only made him want her more. It was just too much for him to take. She was right there. His for the taking. He had to do it.
And he did. At that moment, he reached his slender hands up and grabbed the back of her head, forcing her forward before she could react. Their lips smashed together with incredible force and passion. Jenna went rigid at the touch, but didn't pull away. Draco loosened his grip and was now running his hands through her golden brown locks. He moved his mouth against hers, soaking in every drop, for he knew it could end at any second. But his lust made him take it a step further as he tried to guide his tongue into her mouth.
It was like a wake up call for her because at that moment she furiously shoved Draco away from her, causing the blonde boy to slam against the wall behind him. Jenna's face was distorted with shock and loathing. She immediately raise her right hand as if to send him flying across the room. Still somewhat floating from the kiss, Draco drawled, "What? Are you gonna use your little powers to punish me now?"
"No, actually I was planning on beating the shit out of you. I don't need magic to destroy you," she spit out acidly. Draco believed her. He thought the girl was very capable of kicking his ass.
"Don't pretend you didn't enjoy it," he responded grinning wickedly. She lowered her arm to her side and returned her gaze to normal.
"Like I told you before, you'll never win me over, in any way, shape, or form, Malfoy." He noted that she had resorted to using his last name, and couldn't help but feel slightly disappointed. Jenna then spun around casually and began to saunter off. Halfway down the hall, she turned around again and pointed her wand at Draco while chanting a few words. A song began to fill Draco's ears. Jenna did not stay to sing along, instead leaving Draco alone to listen to its words.
I know how it used to be
You're never this nice
You can't fool me
Now you talkin'
Like you made a change
The more you talk
The more things sound the same
What makes you think
You can just walk
Into my life
Without a good fight
I just sit back
And watch you make a fool of yourself
You're just wasting your time
No, you're never gonna get it, never ever gonna get it, my lovin'
No, you're never gonna get it, never ever gonna get it, my lovin'
No, you're never gonna get it, never ever gonna get it, my lovin'
No, you're never gonna get it, never ever gonna get it, my lovin'
Now you promise me
The moon and the stars
Save your breath
You won't get very far
It doesn't matter what you do
Or what you say
I don't love you, no way
No, you're never gonna get it, never ever gonna get it, my lovin'
No, you're never gonna get it, never ever gonna get it, my lovin'
No, you're never gonna get it, never ever gonna get it, my lovin'
No, you're never gonna get it, never ever gonna get it, my lovin'.
To Draco's horror the song never stopped. It was like she had set it for continuous repeat. She probably had. It was still playing when he reentered the common room, causing laughter to spill from the rest of the Slytherins even his so-called friends, Crabbe and Goyle. He couldn't shut the damn song off no matter how hard he tried. He even had to fall asleep with it still ringing in his ears.
The next day at breakfast the song served as some amusing morning accompaniment. Well, everyone else found it amusing. Draco was raging. He only got more purple as he saw Harry and his two friends, the Weasel and the Mudblood, having a laugh at his expense. Draco immediately located Jenna and demanded she remove her curse. She said it was impossible through her fits of giggles. She said she had instructed it to play 1,000 times before stopping and it had to run it's course.
Draco returned to his table completely dejected and humiliated. He hated that girl so much at this point. Not only had she turned him down, put him down, and privately embarrassed him, she now was making a mockery out of the Malfoy name. This had to stop. He had to repay the bloody wench. Or at least that's what Draco would normally think. All he thought of now were her lips and the way she looked last night. He peeked over at her table. She waved playfully and gave her now famous half grin. Hmmm....I wonder if kissing her right here and now would be a good punishment.....
Author notes: Also I'm gonna start leaving more explanations after each chapter. This chapter is called Contradictory-Part 1. The title is on the base that the characters do or say things that oppose previous beliefs about them. For example: Jenna claims she is going to be nicer to her housemates even though it goes against her nature in the story so far and than she contradicts that statement by saying she wasn't going to go out of her way to please anyone. Harry also can't make up his mind about whether he wants to help Jenna (after seeing her confusion) or smack her. Draco has the most contradictory statements in this chapter. Like Harry, he can't decide if he hates Jenna or wants to make out with her (obviously we know what he decides!). He also says that she's not that pretty, but then goes on to describe her beauty. Jenna's outfits are opposite as well (boyish pajamas to tight, more girlie jeans and rock shirt). There are numerous other examples as I'm sure you noticed.
Contradictory-Part 2 will be chapter 7 and will also contain the theme of opposites. It should be ready in another day or two.
And I would like to ask that people start reviewing! No one has yet! Is my story that bad!?! Lol just kidding. Look I love feedback and would really appreciate your opinions. It would help my writing. Thanks! Hope you like chapter 6!
