Legacy: Prologue

So It Begins

It had not been planned for. My master would surely not allow me to keep it at this stage in the operations of war. My husband did not know, though he caused it to happen. Yet... somehow I wanted to keep it. It was not made of love - there was no love between us - yet it was mine, it was part of me. It grew, day by day, inside of me. It had been for three months, though I only knew now.

I had not been feeling well. This made my master angry; he demanded that I see a healer. There was a healer among the others, a quiet girl who went about her business as though it was usual. She was a Muggle, the lowest of the low, but with a gift for potions. It does not take the hand of a witch or wizard to make a potion, damning though it is to our race. She knew about our world because her brother was at Hogwarts at one point, though now in the fool Ministry of Magic under the fool eyes of the Minister.

My master had not killed her when he destroyed the rest of her family before her eyes. Severus had prevented it. He always knew when someone had potential with potions, he was never wrong, and had somehow persuaded our master to save her. He was not happy about it, however, and has always held it against Severus. He and the others treat her like dirt, yet Severus always looks out for her. I cannot understand his motive, unless he is a traitor. I cannot imagine Severus as a traitor, not after what that Gryffindor scum did to him long ago. And she bears the mark of our master.

And so I was forced to degrade myself, to speak to the filth that is the Muggle girl. Normally we pretend that she does not exist, unless we seek need of her extensive medical knowledge. It took her three seconds to diagnose my problem, and I immediately recoiled.

My first thought was to get rid of it. The spells and potions available were not difficult to perform. However, I then realised that this was not a good idea. I felt... attached to this thing inside me. After Narcissa had been born, mother had used the spells to get rid of the fourth child, for it was another female. It had wrecked her, so that she was unable to have more children. She was devastated, as was my father, long dead before even her. Both my sisters - even Andromeda, marrying that Muggle-born filth - had a child each. One is a boy, the other a girl. Why not me?

And so I have dared to keep this thing inside me, unplanned and probably not wanted. Now I go to tell my husband. I hope that he will not hurt me. The child is part of me, and will be the only thing that I know is mine. It gives me a strange feeling; one of great peace and warmth. I know not what my master will say, for I know that I must tell him soon, too. I must also think of a name. But I hope for a boy to continue the line of the Lestranges. His blood will be pure, must be pure...

Author notes: What happens before the next chapter: The war has been ended for ten years, Voldemort defeated and dead. Bellatrix died at the hands of Neville, and her son given into the hands of the Muggle by Snape. Snape vanished, but eventually returned to marry the Muggle. They have a daughter, two years younger than Bellatrix's son. Now, he is about to go to Hogwarts for the first time.
