Chapter Twelve

With March came the first mention of exams that were to be held in early June.

All of the seventh years were to be attempting their N.E.W.T.S, but no one seemed thrilled with the prospect of revising.

"You've got to be kidding!" Exclaimed Angie, walking out of Potions, "he honestly expects us to remember this much?"

Angie was still holding on the three-foot long piece of parchment that contained all the information that the students SHOULD know in order to just pass.

"I am so set for a fail," she wailed, rolling it up and placing into her bag.

"I don't think you're the only one," muttered Harry, who was still recovering from shock, "probably the only people to pass will be Hermione and Lexey the Wonderkid."

"Somebody say my name?" Asked a voice behind them, belonging to Lexey, "all scared about the final?"

"Of course," replied Neville, who'd fainted in the class.

"Ah, it's not too bad," she said, flipping hey honey-gold hair over one shoulder and turning to find her twin, Lane. "Snape's not too bad, you know. He'll cut us some slack, just watch."

"Yeah, but he likes you," whined Angie, who'd gotten nothing but point deductions from Snape all year, "he still hates me, no matter how hard I try."

Harry hadn't told her the exact reason why this was. In fact, no one knew anything about what he'd witnessed a month ago. He was too scared to tell Sirius and Remus, particularly Remus, who he'd actually talked to. He didn't want Dumbledore to know that he'd made contact, it could cause too much trouble.

"You just have to look above that, Ange," said Lexey, patting the distraught girl on the shoulder. "Snape hated me when I first came here, but all I had to do was prove that I was able to do the work and give everyone a good run for their money." She stopped for a moment and looked around, "hey, where's Hermione?"

Everyone stopped and looked around, she was nowhere to be seen, and then Angie remembered something.

"Oh, she had an important meeting with Dumbledore. Her and Malfoy were the first to leave."

"Urgh," shuddered Lexey at the mention of Malfoy, "I can't believe he's Head Boy, all he should be is Head Pain. Personally Harry," she commented, looking at Harry, "you should have been Head Boy, you're so much better than him."

"No I'm not," muttered Harry, "if it wasn't for him, I'd be dead."

"No," forced Lexey, looking Harry in the eye, "if it wasn't for him, half of the problems at this school never would have happened. His family seems to have something to do with everything."

Harry thought for a moment and realised that she was right. A lot of the problems in the school had something to do with Malfoy's family. Ginny almost died when Lucius, Malfoy's father, planted Tom Riddle's diary in her books, Malfoy was always at the centre of every problem, making it worse.

"I bet," continued Lexey, "the only reason he's Head Boy is because his father offered Dumbledore an amazing sum of money, or an offer that Dumbledore couldn't refuse."

"But," fought Harry, thinking of Dumbledore, "he'd never accept anything, not money, not anything."

"I didn't say it was money Harry," answered Lexey, moving Harry off to a side, so no one else could see. "You and I both know that Lucius is a Death Eater, maybe he threatened to tell Voldemort about the curses that now shroud the school. Not being able to risk losing so many students, Dumbledore accepted."

Harry thought back to when Lexey had been a Death Eater in her fifth year, not because she wanted to, but because she needed to find her parents, who'd been imprisoned.

"Surely not," he exclaimed, shaking his head, "nobody would try that, not even Lucius."

"Harry you don't know Lucius like I do." She was right, she'd spent so much time with him that year and when he discovered that Voldemort was placing her above him, he'd almost killed her. "He'd do anything to make sure that his family were the best, in whatever that is. In this case, he'd do anything to have you forgotten, after all Harry, you're Voldemort's worst nightmare. What more could Voldemort hate than to have you walking around the school like you owned it, instead that's Malfoy, a much better choice in his terms. Lucius gets what he wants, and the students don't hear about you as much. I mean, after last year, everyone believes that Voldemort has far exceeded your power. But, are you sure it wasn't just a ploy?"

"I don't understand," muttered Harry, still shaking his head in disbelief, "it seemed so real and I was there, you weren't. If Voldemort had have had the chance, he'd have killed me."

"Most probably," she considered. "But, that wouldn't fit in with everything. Maybe Malfoy had been tipped off by his father about what was happening, then he'd know when to storm in. it seemed pretty well timed didn't it?"

"Yeah, I guess so."

"If you'd have died, sure Voldemort wouldn't have to worry about you, but the Head Boy this year would probably have been Ron." She bowed her head for a few moments, recalling many memories. "He was maybe even more popular than you, he just hadn't fought Voldemort, so he had no hero status. But, if that had happened, then Lucius wouldn't have his family at the top of the school. Malfoy would still be a snivelling snake."

"He still is," muttered Harry.

"That's beside the point. Lucius probably helped Voldemort get into the castle for this chance, and the plan was successful. Here Malfoy is, thinking that he's Head Boy on his own merits when his parents know that it's a load of crap. What can you do?"

"Not much," answered Harry, allowing Lexey's thoughts to settle in his head. "I hate it when you're so logical, Lexey, it always makes sense."

"I know," she laughed, "but come on, I'm hungry, let's eat."
