Chapter Five

Harry stumbled into Remus on his way to the hospital wing, dropping the books in his hand.

"Oh, Harry," cried Remus, noticing Harry for the first time. He too had been wandering the halls lost in thought. "I'm so sorry, are you alright?"

"I don't think so," stammered Harry, looking up at his old Defence against the Dark Arts teacher, and one of his father's best friends.

Although Remus was younger than forty, a passer-by could have sworn that they could see all the wisdom of the world in the man's eyes, which were a deep chocolate brown and always reassuring. His honey-coloured hair was flecked with grey, tied in a careless ponytail to keep it off of his face, that was both honest and menacing. No one wanted to double cross this man, one look at him showed that he was as cunning as a wolf, because that's what he was. Although he had the body of a man, he had the mind of a wolf and there were some moments, during the change, when he wished he could stay like it forever. For the time being, his lithe and strong frame was cloaked in battered and faded robes.

Taking Harry around the shoulders, Remus looked into the boy's eyes, "why, what's happened? Your scar isn't hurting, is it?"

The bombardment of questions sent Harry into a headspin.

"No, I've just got a headache, I need to rest," he replied, bending to recover his books from the floor for the second time that day.

"Okay then, Harry. If ever you need someone to talk to, I'm here," reassured Remus, helping Harry pick up his books.

Reaching out to an open one, Remus picked it up and looked at the flowing linkscript.

"I know this writing, it's Lily's," he said, flipping the pages of the diary.

Harry saw the book Remus had in his hands, desperately wanting to snatch it from him.

"Where did you get this Harry?"

"Dumbledore gave it to me," Harry lied, averting his eyes so Remus could not find the truth hiding in them.

"Oh, well then, here," he replied, closing the book and handing it to Harry. "When you're finished, I wouldn't mind looking at it, that is, if you don't mind. We all miss her, but you most of all."

Remus' eyes welled with sadness and Harry swore that he saw a small tear escape the chocolate pools.

"That's fine," muttered Harry, shifting the weight from the books to his other hand.

"Okay then, well you better get to the Hospital wing, don't want any accidents happening. Oh, and if you see Sirius, tell him I'm looking for him."

"Will do," called Harry watching the man disappear into an empty classroom.

Instead of progressing to the hospital wing, Harry walked down a few empty corridors, eventually settling in an empty one that was completely silent.

Opening the diary to the page that Harry had seen Remus looking at, he read the short passage, dated November the thirteenth, the same date twenty years ago.

I'm not supposed to breathe a word of it to anyone, but Remus is a werewolf. Severus told me so, after telling me about Sirius' evil plan, which almost killed him. No wonder Remus kept disappearing once a month, he had to go through 'the change' and no wonder he never looked at me, he couldn't risk hurting me.

Severus told me everything today in Charms. All about his ordeal this week. I swear that I will kill Sirius and James, how could they put an innocent life in danger? How awful, when I see them next, I'm going to rip into them. Maybe not James quite so much, he did save Severus' life in the end, but at the very last moment. Frightened the guy to death.

I talked to Remus in private today, telling him that I understood about his being different and all. I didn't say anything about my knowing that he's a werewolf and all, but I think he knew that I knew. He was so sweet, apologising about never being nice to me. He told me that he likes me, but he couldn't do anything about it, Sirius and James laughed too much about it and he didn't want to scare me off. He also thinks Sirius and James are completely out of control at the moment.

Personally, they deserve to be expelled, but all they got was a month of detentions. Dumbledore loves them both I know it, I don't know how James didn't end up Head Boy, he could afford it. Maybe that's why they're still here, James' parents fund this school too much... urgh, he makes me sick!!!

No wonder Remus was so upset about Lily, he loved her!. Harry found himself crying at this discovery, the story was so innocent, but so depressing. Too many things were entwined in one group of people, love, hate and jealousy. It sounded too much like his life.

Standing up and brushing off his robes, Harry sauntered to the common room to have a nap.
