The compartment door slammed shut behind me. I shoved my trunk onto the shelf above my head and sat down on the leather-covered seat across from Hugo.

We were both quiet, thinking about Hogwarts, no doubt.

Beside Hugo, his new pet frog, John Paul, croaked happily. This was the reason we were both very surprised when the seemingly contented toad leapt off the bench and across the floor. Hugo stood up angrily and launched himself after John Paul.

Unfortunately, just then the compartment door slid open and the jumpy pet escaped out into the hall. Hugo dashed out the open door, almost bowling over the unsuspecting girl who had opened it.

She stood and looked quite bewildered as my cousin continued his mad romp after the runaway toad.

I contained my urge to laugh at the confused look on her face, and then shrugged apologetically at the newcomer. "Sorry about him, he's a little over-attached to that frog of his. Anyways, I'm Lily Potter." I waited a moment for the usual wide eyes that I always saw when I introduced myself.

But she didn't even flinch, so I continued. "And he--" I pointed casually to a red-faced Hugo, who had returned clutching John Paul a little too tightly- "--is my cousin, Hugo."

The girl smiled warmly. "Delia Price, nice to meet you."

An awkward silence passed between us and I flashed a pleading look over at Hugo, who had just sat down again in his seat across from me.

He met my green eyes with his dark blue, but only shrugged and shifted around a bit uncomfortably.

I sighed; it was up to me. "Would you like to sit down?" I asked the girl.

Her face lit up. "I would love to, thanks. You see, I would find someone else to bother but my parents are non-magic folk and that doesn't exactly seem to excite most people."

Something else important to know about me is that I hate injustice more than anything in the world. I frowned. "I thought we were done with all that discrimination. But be sure that you will never find such treatment with us; you are always welcome here."

Her smile grew wide and brightened her pretty, light blue eyes. "Thank you, I really appreciate it."

I looked to Hugo again, this time hoping he would back up my welcome.

He shrugged again noncommittally. "Whatever she says, I suppose," he muttered to Delia.

I glared at him but decided to ignore his positively unsightly behavior. "Fine then, perhaps we'll even be in the same House!" I told Delia excitedly.

"The same what?" she asked, looking a bit puzzled.

"House," I repeated, looking at her just as quizzically. Then I remembered her Muggle heritage and realized that she had no idea what I was talking about.

Hugo finally got his dim wits about him and began to explain. "Well, see, this is how it goes: there are four Houses at Hogwarts. You do you what Hogwarts is, I reckon?"

I clearly recognized Hugo's half-playful jab but apparently Delia didn't. She nodded earnestly. "Yes, that's the school we're going to, right?"

"Uh, yea," Hugo answered, looking a bit confused at her naivety. "Well anyways, there are four Houses: Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, Slytherin, and Gryffindor. My parents were in Gryffindor and so were all my uncles and my aunt. Even my older sister's in Gryffindor. So that's where I'll be."

Delia crinkled her brow. "But how do they determine your House?"

"The Sorting Hat," Hugo said with a hint of disdain in his voice.

I kicked him in the shin.

"Ow! What was that for?" he asked me in outrage.

I just rolled my eyes and explained to Delia, "It searches your mind and puts you where it thinks you'll fit best."

Suddenly I realized why she hadn't known who I was. She was a Muggle girl, except, of course, for the fact that she was a witch. People like that were called often Mudbloods, although it is an offensive term that I won't use again.

"I see," Delia replied, as if she was pondering the explanation carefully. "Well, do you suppose I'll be in Gryffindor along with you two?"

I shrugged. "Only the Sorting Hat knows. But it would be lovely, wouldn't it?"

She smiled her radiant smile and I wondered how people couldn't help but like this sweet girl.

Hugo muttered something under his breath that sounded a lot like, "Just lovely." He really is such a prat sometimes!

As our conversation came to another stand still, I heard loud voices in the hallway.

The compartment door slid open suddenly and a blond boy walked in, flanked by a posse of about five other children who all appeared to be about two years older than the three of us.

The minute the boy saw us, his "in command" smile turned to a sneer. "It's the little Potter girl!" he said, startling me. How did he know who I was? And who was he?

"So I see you've finally joined your incorrigible brothers at school, what a pleasure! Don't make yourself scarce, sweetheart." His gray eyes pierced into me and my stomach flipped at his intense gaze.

With those words, he turned and swept from the compartment, leaving me staring after him in shock. For some reason, my whole body felt numb and I could barely think about what had happened.

After a moment, I regained my tongue and asked Hugo, "Who was he?"

Hugo just shrugged. Shrugging seemed to be his favorite gesture at the moment.

So I turned to Delia, hoping she could be of more assistance. But once again, I remembered this was her first day in the wizarding world -- she had no clue.

I couldn't quite shake the image of the boy from my head but I tried my best to forget about him and return to the present.

"I'm going to go change into my robes, care to come, Delia?" I asked the girl beside me.

She nodded, smiling her brilliant smile. "Alright, I'm in."

"We'll be right back," I told Hugo as we grabbed our robes to change.

I walked shakily down the hallway to the ladies' room and held open the door for Delia.

She began to chat animatedly about the weather, our new classes, and her life before now.

I tried to sound interested but the memory of the blond boy's penetrating stare still stuck with me.

Delia paused and looked at me carefully. "Lily, are you alright? You look a little sick."

I tried to forget the boy's memorable stare and struggled to smile at my new friend. "No problem; I'm fine."

She looked skeptical. "It's about that boy, isn't it? You've looked awfully dazed since then."

I forced myself to shake my head and say reassuringly, "Don't worry about me!"

When we emerged from the little room, our appearances were completely altered.

Both clad in long black robes with our wands tucked away safely in the innermost pockets, we were now witches on our way to school, the place we were meant to be.
