'The two of them like each other you know.'
Albus Dumbledore looked up at the picture of Dilys Derwent, former headmistress of Hogwarts. 'What? Minerva and Filius?' Professors Flitwick and McGonagall had just left the headmaster's office.
'Oh dear God no! How can you even imagine that?'
Albus chuckled. 'Then who are you talking about Dilys? You must be more specific.'
'Mr. Potter and Miss Evans obviously. You're waiting for them, aren't you?'
'James and Lily? Dilys, my dear, by all accounts they squabble endlessly, over the minutest details . . . ', said Albus, trying to appear shocked.
'Albus Dumbledore, don't you try to fool me,' said Dilys, 'I've spent almost two hundred years studying human behaviour and I assure you I can see it when two people like each other, not to mention when you are trying to meddle in their affairs without appearing to be.'
'Why Dilys, I haven't an inkling what you're talking about!' said Albus, still failing to seem serious.
'Fine, then Albus would you care to explain to me why you were so eager to have them as the head students this year? Hmm? Despite the fact that, in your own words, they "squabble endlessly over the minutest details" and every faculty member was certain they would never be able to get any work done?'
'The same teachers who now agree that this new batch of prefects is probably the best in about ten years?'
'The very same. I know the two of them are more than qualified to be heads and that they are both natural leaders. I even concede that I was surprised that they work so well together. But that just proves my point, doesn't it?'
'All right, Dilys. I admit it. I too think that James and Lily like each other, but I didn't make them head students to get them together! But if working together does get them together. . . '
Dilys and Albus shared a smile.
'I for one think they shall be adorable together. Imagine Lily's eyes on James's son . . .'
'I agree. And if I'm not mistaken, the bell rang a few minutes ago, so they'll be here any moment.'
