AN UNEXPECTED HOPE

PROLOGUE

Harry Potter had spent yet another summer at the Dursleys' home once again for summer vacation. It had been the best summer he can remember having. The terrible thing about it is that his uncle had started drinking a lot. Harry believed it was because of him and his "freak" nature his uncle had to deal with now, because his Uncle Vernon tried beating the magic out of him more and more.

It was late night and Harry was doing his homework when his beautiful snowy owl Hegwid swooshed through his window dropping a package in front of him. As he was going to pick the parcel up, four more owls flew in at the same time. Three were ones he did not recognize and the fourth was the hyperactive one his best friend owned named Pig.

Harry leaped from his bed to catch the hooting Pig for fright his Uncle would come in and hit him again. He brought Pig over to Hedwig's cage so he could eat after his long journey. Harry turned to identify the three other owls but they left right after they dropped their letters and packages off.

Harry went to his bed to open his letters. The day after tomorrow was his birthday so he wasn't expecting any mail until his actual birthday. He was even more surprised to see that there were two other packages on his bed besides the one Hegwid brought for him. He opened the letter that was attached to the package his own owl brought. It was from Hermione. Smart owl, Harry thought before he read the letter.

Harry,

I hope you are having a good summer! I was with Viktor Krum for most of the summer, but I am having the most fun here with the Weasleys. Kreacher died last week while we were cleaning. His head is hanging next to his mother's. I'm really sorry you can't be here right now. We all really miss you. Ginny is a little disappointed too. You have to admit she has gotten really cute and she seems to have a small crush on you again! Just an idea I thought you can think about! Honest! That's all! The Weasley kids are all planning something that involves you, but I don't know what it is. Well I got you a gift. I know it isn't much, but when I seen it I thought it fit you so perfectly! Have a good birthday! Hugs and Kisses-
Hermione

Harry sat and wondered what the Order must be up to right about now. He sent daily owls to them, but he never got a reply from any of them. He pushed his thoughts away as he started unwrapping Hermione's gift. He chuckled as he seen it was a book, but he had to cover his mouth to hide his laughter when he read the cover.

Quidditch; My Secret Moves and Plays

By: Gilderoy Lockhart

Lockhart was his second year Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts. They did not get along and Harry had no respect for him either. He had seen him last year when he went to St. Mungo's to visit Mr. Weasley. Harry picked Ron's package up; it was two boxes connected to each other. Harry opened the top one up first, forgetting about the other. It contained a lot of sweets and chocolate frogs. It also had a card attached to it.

Harry,

Happy Birthday mate! How is your summer going? Me, the twins, Ginny and Mundungus were thinking of a way to see you and we came up with a plan! Since you can't visit us, we can come to you! You will still have that Protective Charm on your home, so we thought you, Ginny, and me (plus Hermione who is now here too) can sleep in your room, while the twin's share and bedroom with your fat cousin. Mum said it was a joke, but we are all taking this idea very seriously. So keep an eye out for us! I hope your Muggle family is treating you better. If they don't then begin making up weird words making it sound like a spell. Or if that doesn't work, Fred and George have a lot of cool new inventions they can send you. What did you get on your O.W.L.s? I did quite well, which made Mum happy. She is buying me new robes for my good test grades. Well I need to get going so take care!

Ron

Harry folded his letter back up thinking of Fred and George sharing a room with his cousin Dudley. He couldn't imagine anything good happening with that besides scaring his cousin to death so he went to the next package another owl sent. He could tell it was from Hagrid by the messy handwriting it had on it.

Harry,

I hope you are handling yourself okay. Grawp and me have made a lot of progress. He is really great and making plenty of progress. He also asked about you and Hermione a few occasions. I hope them Muggles are treating you good. If they do anything they shouldn't, curse your cousin and take a photo. I would like to see him with some big pig ears, but that is only me. For better news, we found a new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. I think you will do pretty well this year with the replacement. Well anyways, Happy Birthday! I should end this short so I will see you at school shortly.

Hagrid

Oh yea. I found you something that used to belong to your father. I think he might have wanted you to have it anyways. Take care and stay out of trouble. Hah, whom am I kidding? Happy Birthday!

Harry was anxious to see what his father owned as he took the box. The only other thing he inherited from his father besides his bad eyesight and messy black hair was his Invisibility Cloak. Harry opened it and inside was a black velvet box. He opened that to find a silver necklace with a lion shape medallion on it. Harry quickly put the chain on and had a strange energy feeling magically running through his veins. He was about to climb into bed when he realized that there were two more letters on his bed. Just a card? No present? Harry thought humorously. He tore open the letter and read it out loud to himself. It was from Remus Lupin:

Harry,

Just wanted to wish you a Happy Birthday. I have a special gift for you, but I want to give it to you myself. Dumbledore said you could have it too! He also said it was a good idea so I am going to try stopping by soon. I hope you are doing okay. I'm staying at my new house for a while, you should see it, and I think it's great. I just wanted you to know that I didn't forget about you and your lucky day. I'll talk with you soon and I hope you are doing great and staying out of trouble!

Remus

Harry put his letters inside the loose floorboard and thought about how difficult that letter was. He then picked up the last one, which turned out to be his Hogwarts letter giving all of the new things he will need for the new term. He fell asleep as soon as he shut his eyes and slept great for the first time that summer, leaving Ron's other box hidden halfway under his bed.

Kafkina Elisa Potter stayed up most of the night reading all of the old Daily Prophet papers. She had been studying up on everything going on with Voldemort, Albus, and especially Harry Potter. She needed answers and she needed them fast. She ran to her closet and pulled out some clothes out and into a backpack and carried out her broom.

"Where are you going to Kia?" a voice said with worry. Kia wheeled around to see a little girl standing in the bedroom doorway carrying an old doll and a pink blanket.

"Bailey, I am leaving," Kia said. She walked towards the girl and knelt down beside her. "I am going back home, okay? Don't cry Bailey I will come visit you! This is my chance; I need to know the truth. And maybe when I come back, I will have met my brother and you can meet him too!"

"I don't want you to leave Kia! Who will I talk to? Who is going to be my friend? I don't have family, Kia, you are all I have!" Bailey cried as Kia hugged her tight.

It was true though. Bailey didn't have anyone else in the world except for the Headmistress Madam Moquista. Kia befriended Bailey the moment she arrived at the school on orders from Moquista. Moquista is the founder of Moquista's Advanced Wizarding School. She owned a huge home and turned it into a school when she thought that kids weren't being taught what they should be. She was encouraged to turn a wing of the school into an orphanage when she met Melissa Stagnat, an orphan she later adopted.

"I will be back for you Bailey. We are family, I can't just leave you behind, but right now I need to deal with this on my own," she replied as she let the little girl go.

"I'll cover for you until you come back then," Bailey wiped the tears from her face.

"No need, Bailey, Madam Moquista will find out as soon as I get to Hogwarts, but thanks Bailey. I love you," Kia walked over to the window and strapped on the bag.

"I love you too Kia. I'll write to you," Bailey said as she ran out of the room crying.

"I'll be thinking about you Bailey," Kia said aloud before mounting her broom and flying out.

While flying, Kia heard barks coming from the ground below so she flew towards the land until two figures came into view. She slowed her broom down and recognized her two dogs running in the London direction. They were her most trusted friends, besides Bailey, and she knew she couldn't leave them behind. First off, they would always know where she was, and secondly, she didn't believe she could deal with this on her own. Excitement ran through Kia as she thought about seeing her grandfather again. She also had a certain dark-haired guy on her mind as she imagined what she was going to do once she got to Hogwarts. She hadn't heard from her boyfriend in quite a few months and he never went longer then a week without writing before. In his last letter he said he had some important business to attend to immediately and she hoped with all her might that he wouldn't do anything too drastic.

After twenty minutes of flying, Kia arrived in London and started walking from there. She minimized her broom and transfigured two trees into dog leashes--not that her dogs needed them, they were popular for their loyalties to their owners. The Siberian husky and the Chesapeake Bay dogs were as reliable as house elves. It took another thirty minutes to get to where she wanted to be. When Kia entered the Leakey Cauldron, Kia walked straight to the back where the brick wall was as all the late occupants stared at her. After opening the brick wall and revealing Diagon Alley, Kia took her pets off the leash and transfigured them back into small trees. After she placed them to the side of the road, she stuck out her wand hand. A huge purple bus came whistling to a halt in front of her and a tall, oily-faced young man stepped out of the bus to greet her.

"Welcome to the Knight Bus, emergency transport for the standard witch or wizard-"

"Yeah okay," Kia said losing patience. "I need to get to Hogwarts as soon as possible!"

"Er, ok tha's going to be ten Sickles. Wha's your name, lil' lady?" he asked her as he eyed her two dogs.

"I'm so sorry!" Kia apologized shockingly, sticking out her hand. "Where are my manners? My name is Kia." She wasn't comfortable revealing her last name to anyone. She knew that her identity was always a secret amongst everyone. Her own boyfriend whom she had been seeing for the past year and a half still hadn't learned it yet.

"Well Kia, I'm Stan Shunpike and the driver here is Ernie Prang. Ern, this is Kia." Ern grunted in reply as she walked into the bus and dropped the money in Stan's hand. "This is your bed; it's the only one open."

The bed Kia was assigned was the very first one to the front so she would get no privacy from Stan and Ernie. Her dogs jumped on the bed and both rested their heads on her pillows.

Some emergency transport, she thought to herself before she pulled open her bag. She took out some ink and parchment and began writing Bailey a letter while the two workers talked amongst each other. She was almost complete when Stan said something that caught her attention.

"-'Arry Potter? Nah, I heard that all that stuff the Prophet was saying wasn't true at all! And now there's the proof that he was right all long."

"Well, I have never met Harry Potter, but he is far from nutters and if anyone tries saying that all he wants is attention, I would gladly take them on in a duel. He never wants the attention he gets from the public, he doesn't know what to do with it either," Kia said defensively. Stan looked at her like she was planning on putting an Unforgivable Curse on him. Ernie grunted and Stan looked at the driver then back at Kia.

"We are at Hogwarts," he said as he helped her out. "Hope you have a pleasant journey." The bus took off as soon as it came and Kia was left there angry with herself for being rude to that man. She looked around and realized that she was in Hogsmeade. It seemed like just yesterday she was walking from here to Hogwarts with her grandfather, but yet it was really over five years.

She sat on a bench and finished up Bailey's letter. The little eight-year-old girl was the closest Kia ever had to family besides her grandfather, whom she hadn't seen lately.

Bailey,

Don't you worry about a thing do you understand? I will come and get you no matter what it takes. I love you with all my heart and I want you to know that it hurts me to be apart from you as well. I need answers though, answers that only Papa can give me and when I get them, I will come get you. Maybe then you can meet my brother and we can all be a family. I can just see it, Bailey! The three of us living at Hogwarts with Papa after school is out and we will be a normal family, not one so split up like we are now. I hope you are doing well and be ready for me all right? You are my family, maybe not blood, but you will always be my sister and you will also be my brother's sister also! I will share with you I guess. I'll write to you sooner, but until then keep your head high and your eyes open. I love you. I'll see you soon.

Kia

PS: Don't show this to Moquista or I can't come and get you.

She re-read her letter until she was finally satisfied with it. She smiled as she thought about how close the two of them were. They have been the best of friends for seven years already and they practically were blood. They had their own home in the same neighborhood as their school so everything was theirs. She frowned at how she just left her there alone.

Kia pulled open her bag once more and took out a heavy black cloak. It was very chilly outside so she put a heating charm around her and her dogs before getting ready to set off once more.

"Well puppies," she said to her dogs as she resized her broom, "time to go home!"

When Kia Potter arrived at Hogwarts, she went straight to the Owlery and sent Bailey her letter. She hopped on her broom once more and landed perfectly next to the gargoyle statue she knew so well.

"Gummy bears!" she said firmly, but the statue didn't move.

"Lemon drop!" And again there was nothing.

"Chocolate frogs!"

"Bertie Bott's Every Flavored Beans!"

"Sugar quill!"

"Fruit bubbles!" This is getting crazy, she thought before running candies through her head once more.

"Candy cane!"

"Cherry Canon candies!" She yelled each syllable while slamming her feet on the floor like a baby having a tantrum. The statue moved and she smiled to herself while straightening her robes and entering the staircase. She reached the door and stopped when she heard talking.

"Professor, I understand that, but to have someone that young in the Order! This is Harry we are talking about and you said it yourself you don't want him getting hurt! You said you care too much for him for his own good!" a man exclaimed sounding terrified.

Of course he should! Kia thought with a grin. Anyone who judges the Headmaster's opinions better be good at keeping from pissing their pants.

"Arthur, I understand how you feel about the whole situation-" Dumbledore tried replying before a crash was heard.

"Oh I'm so sorry! Really I am! I never meant it!" a girl's voice said apprehensively.

"I agree with Dumbledore," a husky voice growled. "Harry doesn't need to do missions, but he has every right to attend our meetings and know what's actually going on so we don't pull another stunt like last year. By the way Albus, a young, beautiful girl is standing outside your door."

Kia back away from the door quickly with a look of shock placed on her face. He couldn't be talking about her, could he?
