CHAPTER 2

Draco sat quietly at Slytherin table as Crabbe and Goyle talked over him about who knows what. He never liked the First Day Feast, he found it rather long and boring. There were other things that he could be doing, such as torturing Harry Potter and the Gryffindor Trio. Yes, that was more entertaining for him.

Maybe an Unforgivable Curse... Draco thought. Father taught me how to do them, I’m sure that he wouldn’t mind me practicing on that stupid git, Potter.

A sharp nudge shook Draco from his thoughts.

“What is it, Crabbe?” Draco barked.

“Um, sorry, I just wanted you to look at that girl standing back there--” Crabbe answered timidly.

Before Draco could turn to look, Professor McGonagall was tinkling a spoon against her goblet, which was usually a sign to students that Professor Dumbledore would be speaking.

“Welcome back, students,” Dumbledore began. “I have one quick announcement to make. We have a new transfer sixth year student with us this year.” Dumbledore waved a hand and the girl who was standing in the back began to walk forward. People from all tables stared and talked amongst themselves as the girl walked quietly to Dumbledore, who was now standing where the Sorting Hat was just moments before.

Draco felt sick to his stomach. “Denna,” he whispered.

“I would like to introduce Miss Denna Malfoy,” Dumbledore continued.

The Great Hall gasped in unison, then began to buzz loudly. Draco could see people at his table staring at him.

“Draco, darling?” Pansy Parkinson asked. “Who’s Denna?”

Draco pretended not to hear her. He was still feeling a bit queasy and didn’t feel like answering questions.

“Miss Malfoy has been sorted separately, and will be a member of Slytherin house,” Dumbledore said. He put a hand on Denna’s back and pointed to the Slytherin table. She took a seat near the new first years and then looked down at Draco.

Draco did nothing.

Why didn’t they tell me?? Draco thought. His face had begun to redden with anger. Draco thought back to the years past.

Denna and Draco were twins. They were your normal sort of children. Well, as normal as you can get for being Malfoys. They were always playing together and getting into trouble together, pretty much never doing anything separately.

Until their eleventh birthday.

Denna and Draco had both gotten their Hogwarts letters, which came as no surprise. They jumped around, chattering about how wonderful it would be to get to go to school together. Suddenly, their father, Lucius, grabbed Denna by the back of her shirt.

“You will not be going Hogwarts, Denna!” Lucius roared.

“But Father, why not?” Denna cried. “You and Mother went to Hogwarts, so Draco and I should go to Hogwarts!”

Lucius let go of Denna’s shirt and sat her on his knee. “Denna, your mother and I decided that it would be best for you to go to Beauxbatons, rather than Hogwarts.”

“But Father! I want to go to Hogwarts with Draco!” Denna said, throwing her arms around her father’s neck.

“We want you to become a proper witch and young lady. Beauxbatons will be best,” Lucius said calmly.

“But-”

Lucius put a finger to Denna’s mouth. “No more,” he said. She slid off his knee and ran to her bedroom.

Draco came back to present time, with a small smile on his face. Draco and Denna, at the same school. Bloody brilliant, Draco thought.
