Harry Potter and The Society

Chapter One:

I fidgeted nervously with my honey colored hair as I stood in the crowded train station. People were rushing all around me eager to get onto their respectable trains. They were muggle of course - my parents always complained about how the wizards had to be suppressed by the non-magical world - and were oblivious to the train station hidden in their mist.

"Rose, are you ready?" said my new friend Hermione. I had met Hermione on vacation in the Virgin Islands. My father had 'business' there and I was forced to come along, as usual. Meeting Hermione had made my summer much more exciting. I was so shocked when my parents actually allowed me to go to Hogwarts with Hermione. I suspected the only reason her father has agreed was because of the rumor that Albus Dumbledore had left the school to help fight the War. Either that or he wanted me to help him.

Fat chance, I thought bitterly.

"What? Oh - Yeah, hold on a second. I need to get my trunk," I said bending down to try and lift the heavy trunk. I heard the pounding of feet and then a voice call out -

"Oi, Hermione there you are. We were looking all over for you." Looking up, I saw that the speaker was a boy about my age with shocking red hair and freckles. Even if Hermione hadn't me all about him I still would have been able to pick him out as a Weasley. My father was often speaking of them at home to mother.

"Hello Ron. How was your summer?" said Hermione. I smirked seeing the faint blush appear across her slender neck when Ron hugged her quickly. I had spent the last two months listening to Hermione complain about how Ron was too thick to notice her affections and this wasn't the first time the thought crossed my mind to hook them up.

"It was okay, Harry and I missed you though, tell me why you had to stay with your parents all summer?" Ron said, his voice bordering on whining.

"Ron! I told you, what, fifteen times. I didn't have to. I wanted to," she said exasperatedly.

Ignoring them I bent back down to resume the struggle with my trunk. None of us noticed the second boy walk up to them. Giving up on the futile struggle I looked up to see him smirking at the pair. As if he sensed my gaze the boy smiled at me and said -

"You seem to be having a problem with that trunk, can I help?" His voice was low and he seemed almost surprised to find them pass his lips.

Hearing his voice Hermione and Ron stopped arguing and looked at him. Hermione grinned at him and hugged him warmly. Ron, however, ignored him as he finally noticed me. He looked at me suspiciously, but I pretended not to notice.

"Oh, how silly of me, Harry, Ron, this is Rose. I met her at the Virgin Islands over the summer. She was the reason I chose to stay there. Her parents needed to stay there for a few more months and my parents offered to take her with me, so she's coming to Hogwarts." Hermione grinned. Harry seemed interested in Hermione's new friend. Yet Ron still looked at me with hidden dislike.

"Hello, it's nice to meet you guys. Hermione told me so much about you." I smiled as amicably as I could at the two. The introduction was cut short by a shrill whistle. I assumed this was a warning to the passengers that the train was about to leave. Ron, helping Hermione with her stuff, explained that he and Harry had already saved a compartment.

"So, do you?" asked Harry suddenly. I must have looked bewildered because he elaborated, "need help with you trunk?"

"Yeah actually, I do, thanks." Taking one end as I took the other Harry raised an eyebrow.

"You're not from around here are you? What school did you go to before?"

"I didn't. I was home schooled I guess. My parents travel a lot and they always took me with them so they taught me everything. I've known magic since I was little," I explained. Realizing I was barely helping I let go of my end of the trunk and walked beside Harry.

"So you're pureblood then," he said. It wasn't really a question.

"Through and through." A slightly bitter tone slipped into my voice, though I doubt Harry noticed. Not everyone was as intoned to details as I was.

We reached the compartment and sat down. Ron and Harry had a lot of questions about our summer and all about me and they didn't stop talking until the lady with the food appeared. Harry and Ron pigged out while Hermione and I talked.

"So, how do you feel about them?" Hermione asked quietly while the boys ate and discussed the latest broom model.

"They're really nice," I answered honestly. "But I don't think Ron liked me very much."

"Don't be ridiculous, of course he does," Hermione insisted. But I could shake the feeling that Hermione was wrong.

"Ron, Hermione, don't you two need to go down to the Prefects' compartment?" Harry asked suddenly. Hermione anxiously looked down at her watch before nodding and pulling Ron out of the compartment without a word. Seconds after they left our compartment door flew open. I glanced up, but seeing who it was hastily looked down, trying to shield my face with my long hair.

Draco Malfoy entered the compartment with his two goons Crabbe and Goyle. His signature smirk was present on his pale face.

"What do you want, Malfoy," Harry spat. Draco just smirked.

"I was sent here to get the Mudblood and Weasel." Harry tensed with Draco's words and subconsciously reached for his wand. "But, that's not Granger is it? Who is this Potter, your new whore?" Harry jumped up ready to curse him into the netherworld, but I lay my hand on his arm to stop him. By doing so I accidentally exposed my face to Draco.

The sudden change on Draco's face was almost comical in a different situation. His eyebrows scrunched in confusion and he forgot about Harry completely.

"What are you doing here?" he asked me.

"Just leave Draco, this isn't the time, or the place," I said coolly. Harry glanced between the two in confusion. Draco and I were locked in a staring contest that was almost a battle of wills. People didn't say I was stubborn for nothing though.

"Fine. But this won't be the last you see of me," snarled Draco. He then motioned to Crabbe and Goyle to follow him. Before he left he glanced at my hand and said, "Things are about to get a little more complicated for you, darling."

"Do you want to explain what that was about?" Harry said when we were alone again.

I sighed softy. Sitting back down I drew my knees up to my chest, a position that made me feel more secure, and looked at Harry softly. "It's complicated. You know that almost all pureblood families are related," Harry nodded, "Well the Malfoys are distantly related to me on my father's side, and Draco and I know each other from various functions; balls and luncheons, and I guess he was surprised to see me," I made up quickly.

Harry's face showed that he felt that something didn't add up. He appeared to think over the conversation and asked, "What did he mean 'Things are about to get complicated'? And why did he call you darling?" he asked.

"I don't know," I said, my voice thick with worry. "But I don't like it."

"Ron, you like Rose don't you?" Hermione asked. The Prefect meeting had just ended and they were heading to the front of the train to help organize the students as they entered Hogwarts.

"I guess, something about her strikes me as odd," Ron said in a low voice.

"What do you mean, odd?" she asked indignantly.

"It's just, she seems familiar. And not in a good way. What's her last name again?"

"Cooper. It's fairly common. I think you just don't like her because she's the reason I didn't go to your home over the summer."

"That's not true Hermione, you're just avoiding the point. How well do you know her anyway?" Hermione ignored him, "Well, just be careful around her, will you."

Hermione sighed in exasperation but agreed to shut Ron up.
