Lightning

If Teddy was a calm, placid lake, then Lily was a blinding bolt of lightning.

Everybody thought that Teddy would marry Victoire, who was rather like a calm placid lake herself, so it was quite a shock when Lily and Teddy fell in love.

Firstly, the age difference was large- more than eleven years. Victoire was only two years younger than Teddy. But nobody could complain, because Teddy's father was a good thirteen years older than his mother, and they had been wonderful people. Teddy grew quite weary, however, of pointing this out to heckling family members.

Secondly, it was temperament. Teddy was quiet and reserved. He was funny and well-liked, but only with close friends, but too often he retreated back into his shell. Same with Victoire. Lily, on the other hand, was friends with the entire school it seemed, and was vivacious, lively, and had a gift for humor. She was brilliant light, he was the silvery moon.

Thirdly, they looked so different. She had flame-red hair, and he preferred a rich royal blue or sometimes a light brown. Their unique hair always stood out in a crowd.

Lastly, Teddy had thought his godfather would murder him if he found out.

So it was a complete and utter shock, when at a dinner at Harry's house with the entire Weasley-Potter clan, Lily laid down her fork in the middle of the meal and announced that she was in love. They had been talking about telling their families soon, but he didn't think they would find out like this!

"Dad, I'm in love."

Everybody grew quiet. The Weasley-Potters were pros at knowing when some quality family drama was coming.

Teddy sunk a little lower in his seat across from her.

"Is that so?" Harry asked, raising an eyebrow.

Lily nodded happily. Teddy watched, frozen with dawning horror.

"May I ask who?" Harry inquired, sounding amused.

Shit.

"Teddy," Lily announced.

She beamed across the table at him. There was a gleam of wickedness in her eyes. She knew how much he dreaded the family reactions, so she had ambushed him with her declaration. There was no going back. Teddy buried his face in his hands, face on fire.

There was a shocked silence for approximately ten seconds, and then everybody began speaking at once.

"She's too young-"

"I thought he liked Victoire!"

"How lovely!"

"Pay up, little brother."

"Opposites do attract..."

"The age difference!"

Harry was the only one not speaking besides Lily and Teddy. His mouth was hanging open.

"Breathe, Dad, breathe," Lily said lightly. He snapped his mouth shut. Teddy raised his head and looked at his godfather. Harry wasn't glaring, but he wasn't grinning either.

His face seemed to say Break my daughter's heart and I will kick your arse.

I love her, Teddy mouthed.

Well, he thought he had mouthed. He must have said it out loud, because everybody looked at him. Harry gave a slight nod.

Lily leaned across the table and kissed him.

The family began cheering (well, some of them. Lily's siblings and her younger cousins were making retching noises.)

If Teddy was a calm, placid lake, then Lily was a blinding bolt of lightning. Brilliant, beautiful, and maddeningly unpredictable.

And he loved her for it.
