Living with Danger

AU. March 1982: Hermione Granger, age 18 months, is the ward of her twenty-years-older sister Gertrude, who calls herself Danger. Their parents died without warning last August, and ever since, Danger’s been having dreams – dreams about the little boy she baby-sits, and his father and mother, and his father’s three best friends... dreams that seem to say everything is not as it appears... but what can she do? On March 15, she takes the children to the park, and unexpectedly meets someone from her dreams... a pale man with graying hair, who featured in her dream last night – which had some rather unexpected content...

Chapter 2: A discovery, a dream, a dinner, and attraction on both sides... Chapter 3: Writing to Aletha, full moon, a disaster averted, and something new begun...

Chapter 4: Laying Plans: Discoveries, decisions, dreams, true love, and terrible puns. Chapter 5: Preparations: A look at the Dursleys, a look ahead, and a wedding.

Chapter 6: Curse: The plan goes into action, necessitating leaving Harry with the Dursleys for two weeks. When Remus and Danger return for him, what they find calls for drastic action... and they take it.

Chapter 7: If It Be Thus to Dream... : Harry comes home safely, and Sirius thinks he's going mad... after all, at the full moon, werewolves can't think, and they certainly can't open cell doors. Right?

Chapter 8: A Good Name: Sirius is reunited with Harry, meets Danger, and gradually gets his mind around the concept that he's free. Bring your own tissues.

Chapter 9: Simple Stuff: The Ministry gets word of Sirius' escape, but misinterpret what they learn, and the escapees make it safely home, reuniting Sirius and Aletha. More possible tissue moments.

Chapter 10: What Have You Done? Dumbledore learns of Sirius' escape and discovers Harry's abduction and Remus' disappearance. Special feature - the Curse of the Righteous in action!

Chapter 11: Another Angle: Dumbledore dreams of Danger, Danger dreams of a prophecy, and everyone gets to read the newspaper.

Chapter 12: What It Would Now Be: Aletha gets a new job, Dumbledore gets a bunch of photographs, and readers get a preview of who else will feature in this story.

Chapter 13: The Second Letter: Danger writes to Dumbledore in August about the past few months. Nightmares feature prominently, and a new name for everyone is coined - the Pack.

Chapter 14: You're WHAT?! Aletha has news for Sirius.

Chapter 15: Beautiful Is the Child: Covers from Halloween 1982 to summer 1983, and the unusual events of the first day of June.

Chapter 16: Discovered: August 1983. A trip to Diagon Alley goes wrong, and the public's suspicions about Sirius having Harry are confirmed.

Chapter 17: Crossing of the Paths: August 1983 to July 1984. A glimpse of the Weasleys, glances at Pack life, and a cliffhanger ending as Lucius finally finds what he's been looking for...

Chapter 18: Light and Darkness: July 1984. The Pack supports each other in a difficult time, and the cubs make a new friend and prove their mettle against a formidable foe.

Chapter 19: Justice and Revenge: July 1984. The Pack has a talk with their benefactor and learns the price of their freedom - something totally unexpected...

Chapter 20: Key to His Heart: July 1984. The Pack returns home with their newest cub. How will they teach him the meaning of love - and will he understand them when they do?

Chapter 23: Happy Ending: August 1984-July 1985. Tonks goes to Hogwarts and makes friends with Charlie Weasley, Petunia loses custody of Dudley, and Sirius writes his first novel. Chapter 24: Curiosity and What it Killed: July 1985. Snape gets his face licked, and McGonagall gets herself treed.

Chapter 25: What's in a Name? August-September 1985. A look at Dudley, the Weasleys, and Neville, and the meaning of Snape's first name. Chapter 26: Bits and Pieces: September 1985-December 1986. Snape notices many little things that aren't quite as they should be.

Chapter 27: Two and Two Together: January-July 1987. Snape continues to gather information until he finally figures out the truth. Chapter 28: Three Sides Around: July 1984. Snape finds what he's looking for and goes in.

Chapter 29: Confrontations: July 1987. Snape's gamble doesn't work out quite the way he planned. The Pack hides at Grimmauld Place and teases the psychotic portrait. Chapter 30: It's a Nice Place to Visit: July 1987. The Pack visits Aletha's aunt in America.

Chapter 31: But I Wouldn't Want to Stay: December 1987-January 1988. The Pack returns to England and visits Hogwarts, then move into their new home in Devon. Chapter 32: This Changes Everything: January 1988. The cubs make a new friend - one who's just their own age, and red-headed.

Chapter 33: Make New Friends: January 1988. The Pack meets the Weasleys and the Lovegoods, and Harry and Sirius almost let the secret out. Chapter 34: But Keep the Old: 1988. A letter to Andromeda, Quidditch, Tonks, Shakespeare, and other fun stuff throughout the year.

Chapter 35: One Is Silver: 1989. House-elves, Snape, pranks, a mysterious visitor, vanishing glass, dancing, and the Marauders' Map. Chapter 36: And the Other's Gold: 1990. Appearances by the Dursleys and the Notts, and a couple of really bad things happen.

Chapter 37: Don't Look Back: December 23, 1990. Danger gets an unusual set of instructions on how to deal with a very bad situation. The Pack is separated, and prospects are bleak.

Chapter 38: Open Doors: December 23, 1990. The Pack starts to deal with the new reality, and the cubs are reunited. Chapter 39: Close Every Door: December 23, 1990. Fears are faced, friends are found, and hope is renewed.

Chapter 40: What Can We Do? December 23, 1990. The cubs make a discovery, and a decision, that changes everything. Chapter 41: Debts and Deals: December 23, 1990. Danger meets new people, learns a few things, and comes to a decision.

Chapter 42: Do You Trust Me? December 23, 1990. Andromeda talks to Sirius, and Sirius does something stupid - or does he? Chapter 43: Negotiating: December 23, 1990. More fears are confronted, and a deal formerly struck is invalidated.

Chapter 44: Reap What You Sow: December 23-24, 1990. Various people get themselves ready for the trial of the century. Chapter 45: Vindication: December 24, 1990. The trial itself.

Chapter 46: Aftermath: December 24, 1990. Exactly what it says. Chapter 47: Gifts: December 25, 1990 - March 15, 1991. All sorts of gifts are given and received, some more gratefully than others.

Chapter 48: Unexpected: April-August 1991. Life continues "normally", whatever that means for the Pack. Harry finds an old friend, the Dursleys get a shock, and Sirius does something he never thought he would. Chapter 49: September 1, 1991, London. An era of Pack-life ends, as the three older cubs and Ron depart for school, and Meghan makes a new friend on the platform.
