Facing his fifth year at Hogwarts, Harry is reluctant to go back with Voldemort having risen again. After an attack on Harry's owl, Harry anticipates Sirius' arrival at Privet Drive to prepare for his trip to Diagon Alley. Harry once again travels on the Knight Bus, encounters the mysterious witch that has been following him, and deals with Petunia.

Harry and Sirius, after a delay with the Knight Bus, finally get to Diagon Alley. There, Harry meets with Hermione, where they discover all is not well in the wizarding world.

After learning about Fudge's propaganda campaign against him, Harry decides to leave Diagon Alley. However, Harry and Hermione have been thrown from an unexpected and violent explosion at Gringotts. As Harry staggers to his feet, he realizes he is in mortal peril, and he must find Hermione and Sirius before they too become victims.

After the devastating attack on Diagon Alley, Harry recuperates in the Leaky Cauldron. As Harry grapples with the consequences and casualties of the attack on Diagon Alley, he receives several surprise visits as he copes with the lastest blow to the wizarding world.

Harry returns to Privet Drive, according to Mr. Weasley's instructions. With the events of Diagon Alley weighing heavily on his mind, Harry seeks rest and healing. However, when the conflict between Petunia and Vernon erupts, Harry learns a valuable lesson from someone he would never have guessed.

Harry says good-bye to Privet Drive when he goes with Mr. Weasley to the Burrow. With the drama of Privet Drive behind him, he looks forward to a couple of fun filled days at the Burrow before his return to school. It is, however, short lived, when the Weasley family too has been drawn into scandal.

In the aftermath of Percy's separation from the Weasley's, Hermione, Ron, and Harry prepare for their fifth year at Hogwarts. The train ride, however, is loaded with a tense feeling of anticipation. But when the trio are separated into their own train compartment, Harry must deal with squabbles and a rivalry that has not waned over the past summer.

Harry, Hermione, and Ron finally arrive at Hogwarts. As they look forward to the feast and the sorting, Professor McGonagall arrives and takes them separately to the school. Harry, however, finds that Hogwarts is not completely safe, when he is confronted with an unexpected foe.

After Harry's disastrous encounter with a sentinel, he is taken to the hospital wing by Professor McGonagall. With the thoughts of his visions swirling in his head, Harry, Hermione, and Ron begin their fifth year at Hogwarts.

After Dumbledore's announcement that his short departure will cause classes to be delayed, Harry's day is filled with meetings. As Harry meets with Dumbledore before he goes away, Harry, Hermione, and Ron begin to understand that Voldemort is searching for a mysterious and powerful object. Harry, besides figuring out Voldemort's plan, attends many other meetings, keeping his day very busy indeed.

Harry's scar is hurting once more, and Harry suspects danger. As he roams through the school, pondering his scar, he ends up in Dumbledore's office, searching for clues of Dumbledore's mission. He receives a visit from the mystery witch, who takes Harry to a place he never in his life wanted to be.

After Harry's terrifying experience in Azkaban, Harry must face something equally as terrifying: the opening day of classes. With teachers loading heavy amounts of work upon them, the fifth years are extremely busy. And on top of it all, Harry, Hermione, and Ron are confronted with new information on the mysterious seer of Voldemort's and new information on the enigmatic Orb of Power.

The school workload continues to increase for the fifth years of Hogwarts. However, on top of everything else, Harry, Ron, and Hermione must deal with a mysterious Defense Against the Arts teacher who is seemingly Obliviating all of the members of her class...

The Quidditch season is almost upon Hogwarts, and Gryffindor needs a new Keeper. Harry and the Gryffindor team hold try-outs to fill Oliver Wood's post. While this involves very little work for Harry, he also has to deal with a poisonous Draco Malfoy and dreams of a certain sentinel that holds a key to the past...

Harry's always managed to defeat the challenges that he's presented with. Yet on Halloween, Harry finds that he just can't win. He can't win against two of his professors, who seem to want him to fail and enjoy so when he does. He can't win against Malfoy, who seemingly has found a new way to get under his skin. And he can't win in an area he has had very little experience in: romance.

After storming out of Gryffindor Tower, Harry begrudgingly realizes that he has feelings for Hermione. But how will that affect Hermione's and Ron's new relationship? And with the Quidditch game between Ravenclaw and Gryffindor, Harry once again sees his old crush, Cho? Does he still have feelings for her too? Confusion abounds and the mystery deepens.

The fall season is approaching a close, and Harry finds his social life beginning to overwhelm him. Ron and Hermione are still bickering, Cho is ignoring him, and Harry must struggle with the fact that any relationship with Hermione will be very difficult. Add to this a recurring dream and a heartbreaking dilemma for Neville, and Harry's life has become extremely complicated. Drama abounds, and a surprise cameo from a slightly aloof Hogwarts student.

The mystery intensifies when Harry, Ron, and Hermione practice their Defense Against the Dark Arts. A run-in with Malfoy, a scathing and enigmatic encounter with Lucius and Mrs. Figg, and a night time meeting with Snape in the Owlery leave Harry with much to contemplate and very little information go on...

However, he does not get rest at night, when his dreams are invaded by visions of the past, concerning the mysterious sentinel, the battle at Hogwarts so long ago, and the Orb of Power, which still has not been found...

Christmas holidays are beginning at Hogwarts, but Harry finds no rest. Still plagued by complications between Hermione, him, and Ron, Harry, along with Ginny, must help Neville keep his parents in a ward where he can be allowed to visit them. Harry sees first hand the horrors that Voldemort and his followers have done, and their lingering effects, in this emotional and tragic chapter.

While Neville and Ginny address the review board on Neville's parents, Harry stays in the ward room to make sure the Longbottoms take their medication. But when Harry has the dream he had on his birthday, and witnesses the prophecies that Malagar, the seer, has made, his mind makes a connection he should have made long ago. Now, as Harry discovers the legacy of the Longbottom family, things at St. Mungo's spiral out of control, and turns into a fight for survival. A pivotal, can't miss chapter.
