Chapter 1: Meeting Todd
On a quiet summer afternoon, Hermione Granger lay on her living room couch looking totally bored. Normally, one would find Hermione knee deep in work with rolls of parchment and extra quills scattered around her as she wrote essays four feet longer than necessary. Or, more often than not, she would be found with her head in a big book reading up on, well... anything. However, being home for over a month for the summer holidays, she had completed all her homework within the first two weeks, and read all fifteen books she had borrowed from the Hogwarts library. Now she was stuck at home lying on the couch with nothing else to do except to stare idly at the ceiling.
This is just great. There's absolutely nothing to do around here. I'd even rather be at Grimmauld Place than here. Cleaning out those foul doxy infested rooms is much more entertaining than staying here all day wasting my time, Hermione thought to herself. After a few minutes of uninterrupted ceiling gazing she stood up and sighed. Might as well go for a walk, she said to herself.
"Mum, I'll be right back," she called as she made her way to the front hallway of her home. She headed towards the mirror in the foyer to inspect her appearance. She was wearing a pair of jeans, a plain white fitted t-shirt and a light maroon jacket. Her normally bushy hair was up in a simple bun with a few loose tendrils coming out. All in all she looked like a normal fifteen year-old teenager.
"Where are you going dear?" her mother asked from the kitchen.
"Just out for a walk," she replied. "I'll be back before dinner."
"All right then, you be careful."
Mrs. Granger walked out to the front hall to meet her daughter. She was wearing an apron around her waist and had a bit of flour on her face. Hermione's mother was one of those caring but understanding mums. She always allowed Hermione to make her own choices. She had faith in her daughter to fend for herself and trust her own instincts. However, after Hermione had informed her and her husband about the happenings of the Wizarding world, well, let's just say she was a little more than worried. She wished there was something for her to do to protect her only child, but what could she do? All she knew was that she couldn't wait for the Order to find a new headquarters so her daughter could return to her friends and be in safe hands.
"I will Mum, don't worry," Hermione assured the older woman with a smile. "I won't be long. I'll probably just walk to that new café a few blocks from here."
"That's fine dear," Mrs. Granger said, giving her daughter a hug before she left. "Do you need any money or anything?"
"No thanks Mum, I've got some change," Hermione replied. After saying a goodbye to her mother and grabbing her purse, she walked out of the house, happy to get some fresh air. The café was about ten minutes away and had opened earlier that month. Hermione had never been there, but she'd read in the paper that it was quite the place to be. Critics raved about its excellent coffee and beverages and praised them for having the best scones in England.
After ten minutes Hermione walked into the busy café; the aroma of coffee immediately filling her nostrils. The small place was packed. There were several tables in the middle of the room, three or four stuffed arm chairs, and a comfy looking crème colored loveseat by the wall. All of which seemed to be occupied. She made her way over to the counter to look at the menu on the wall.
After ordering a hot chocolate and an almond scone, Hermione decided to check if there were any seats available outside. Turning away from the counter to make her way out, she bumped into a person standing behind her, causing the scone to drop from her hand.
"Oh, I'm so sorry," a male voice said. "Here, let me get you a new one".
Hermione looked up preparing to give the man her gratitude, but when her eyes met the face of the stranger her voice caught in her throat. Standing in front of her was a young man that looked exactly like Draco Malfoy. He seemed around her age and had the same platinum blond hair and pale skin as Malfoy. He even had similar facial features. He also seemed about the same height and body build as him. The only difference was his eyes. Instead of having the cold grey eyes like Malfoy's, this guy had warm and beautiful blue eyes.
Hermione's eyes widened in realisation. Maybe this guy's related to Malfoy, she thought. She stared back at the young man who now had a perplexed look on his face. But, he seems too nice to be a Malfoy. I mean he even offered to get me another scone. And besides, he's in the Muggle world. What would a Malfoy be doing here? No, he can't be a Malfoy. Can he? she asked herself. Well, there's only one way to find out.
"Malfoy?" she asked, hesitantly. The confused look left his face almost instantly and was replaced by a timid smile.
"Um, yeah. I didn't know anyone would recognise me here," was his tentative response.
Hermione looked at him with surprise. Meeting a polite and almost shy Malfoy was something she would have never expected to happen, and meeting him in the Muggle world alone was a complete surprise in itself.
"What are you doing here?" she blurted out before she could stop herself. She wanted to know what a pureblooded, Muggle-hating wizard would want from a café filled with Muggles that served nothing but Muggle food and beverages.
Malfoy cocked his head to the side slightly, wondering why she sounded so shocked. "Well, we just finished shooting a scene a few blocks from here, and I decided to get myself a drink." He looked at the menu behind her and asked politely, "I've never been here before. Do you have any suggestions?"
She turned to look at the menu too, forgetting she was talking to a Malfoy because of his civil disposition. "Well, this is my first time here too, so..." She stopped mid-sentence as she realised what he said earlier. "Wait, what do you mean by shooting a scene?" she asked, bewildered. Was that some sort of code for saying he was hexing some innocent Muggles for the hell of it or something?
"Oh, it's a scene for the fourth movie. You know, Goblet of Fire. It 's the one where Moody turns me into a ferret." He chuckled softly, his eyes still on the menu. "I swear it's probably the funniest scene in all the films."
Hermione's eyes widened once more as she turned to look at the stranger next to her. What the bloody hell is this guy talking about? Goblet of Fire? Moody turning him into a ferret? That stuff happened two years ago. Plus, Moody turned Draco Malfoy into a ferret, not this bloke. And what's this about a movie? OK, now I'm confused.
She looked at his face to see if she could tell if he was serious or not. He was still reading the menu, but he gave no obvious indication of mockery.
"Excuse me," she started, unsure of what was going on. She knew he was a Malfoy and she should just leave him alone, but she was too curious to find out what this guy was playing at. "I don't understand. What movie are you talking about?"
He looked away from the menu and faced her. "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire of course," Malfoy said simply.
Hermione gasped slightly, uncertain of what to think. A movie called Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire? Yeah right! Now I know this guy is joking. But why would he be?
He continued to stare at her, waiting for her to respond, but she just gaped unblinkingly at him. She was starting to feel very uncomfortable but she wanted to find out what the deal was with this guy. Suddenly a thought entered her mind.
Maybe he's after Harry.
She narrowed her eyes and asked harshly, "Who are you and how do you know Harry Potter?" She took a few steps toward him, trying to make herself seem intimidating.
He jumped at her tone and held up his hands as if in surrender. "Whoa, hold on a second," he said, stepping back a few inches so she wouldn't be in his face. "I thought you knew who I was. You did call me Malfoy didn't you?" He had a curious look on his face like he wasn't sure what was going on.
"Yes I know you're a Malfoy," she snapped, unable to control her anger. Several people sitting at a nearby table looked at her. Seeing this she lowered her voice. "I want to know how you know Harry Potter. And what's all this about a movie of him?" She closed in the gap between them yet again.
"What do you mean how do I know Harry Potter? Everyone knows Harry Potter," he said confused. "And about the movie, well, what do you want to know about it?"
Well that's true. Everyone in the Wizarding world knew about Harry. He is the Boy-Who-Lived after all, she reasoned to herself. She began to wonder if maybe she jumped to conclusions with this bloke. He does seem rather kind, and he didn't even raise his voice at me when I confronted him, she told herself. It could be possible that there is one decent Malfoy out there, right?
"Look Malfoy, I just..."
"Todd," he interjected.
"Huh?" Hermione asked, confused.
"Call me Todd. That's my name. Todd Williams," he told her.
Her brow furrowed as she looked at him. "But I thought you said you were a Malfoy?" she asked as she shook her head.
OK, if his name is Todd Williams then why did he say he was a Malfoy when I asked? Before she could even voice her question, he answered her.
"Well yeah, I play Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies. I thought you knew that," he stated offhandedly.
She stared back at him, an unreadable expression coming over her face. He plays Draco Malfoy in the movies? Is this guy for real? She tried to read his expression once more. Well, he looks honest.
"Oh my gosh, Todd Williams!" a female voice exclaimed from Hermione's right, interrupting her thoughts. She turned just in time to see two girls a few years younger than her run up to Todd with smiles on their faces and pens and paper in their hands.
"You're such a great actor!" One of the girls fawned while the other nodded her head enthusiastically. "We're really big fans of yours. Can we please have your autograph?" she asked as they both handed him their scraps of paper and their pens.
"Yes, we absolutely love you!" the girl that was nodding added. "We just came back from watching Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban for the sixth time," she confessed proudly. Todd handed her his autograph and she tightly clutched it to her heart.
Hermione's eyes glazed over as comprehension dawned on her. He is serious, she thought as she placed a hand over her mouth in surprise. She backed away slowly so she could rest against the wall.
Hermione was too preoccupied with this new revelation to notice the two girls leave and see that Todd was walking over to her with a concerned look gracing his handsome face.
He placed a hand on her shoulder and asked softly, "Are you OK?"
However, she was unaware of this because of her own distracting thoughts. Being such a logical person, Hermione wanted to try and figure all this out rationally.
All right, so his name is Todd Williams and he's an actor that plays Draco Malfoy. A person I know in real life has his own character in a movie. And it's a movie about one of my best friends! No, this can't be possible. Can it?
"Miss, are you OK?" Todd started waving his hands in front of her face to get her attention, but it was to no avail.
Oh Merlin, this is too much. I need to find out what's happening. Maybe this guy can help me. He seems nice enough, Hermione thought. She broke out of her contemplation and focused her attention back on Todd.
"Hello? Can you hear me?" he was asking, his voice filled with concern.
"Huh? Oh yeah, sorry about that," she finally managed to say, looking slightly embarrassed.
"It's fine. I was getting worried there for a moment though," he said with a small smile. He was relieved to see she had finally come to.
She smiled back at him; glad he wasn't mad at her for acting so paranoid.
"I'm sorry, but can I ask you your name?" Todd asked politely.
"Oh, how rude of me," she began. She straightened up and stuck out her hand to shake his. "My name's Hermione."
"Yeah right," he remarked with a laugh, but shook her hand anyway.
Hermione tilted her head and looked at him perplexed.
"Is it really?" Todd asked with a raised eyebrow.
She nodded.
"Oh, well that's a weird coincidence. Is she your favorite character from Harry Potter as well?"
Hermione froze; Todd's hand still in hers as realisation hit her like a ton of bricks.
I'm in the movies too? No, that's just preposterous! Isn't it? But then I guess that would make sense. I am one of Harry's best friends after all, and if Malfoy is in the movie, I must be. So that means Ron's probably in it too! I really need to know what's going on now. This is all just too weird.
"Look, can you do me a favor?" she inquired, forgetting the previously asked question. She dropped his hand and placed both her hands on his shoulders and looked him straight in the eye.
"Er, sure, I suppose," Todd replied apprehensively.
"Can you tell me everything you know about Harry Potter and the movies?"
"OK..." he said slowly. "I mean, I can't give anything away about the new one, but I can tell you about everything else."
"Really? Thank you," she replied happily, throwing her arms around him in a grateful hug.
"Er, no problem," he said, hugging her back tentatively. "Umm, can I just get my scone first?"
Author notes: Thanks to my two wonderful betas Irene and Jane! You guys rock out!
Just to clearify once more, yes, Tom Felton is the name of the real actor that plays Draco Malfoy, but I decided not to use his name, or any of the other actors’ names for several reasons.
First of all, some fanfiction sites don't allow you to use non-fictitious characters, and I wasn’t sure if this site did, so I left it. I've also been taught that before using someone’s name and image for a story you should always get their permission.
For one thing, it's sorta rude just using something that belongs to someone else without asking first. It can offend that person if you make them do something in your story that they wouldn't normally do. That’s the good thing about fictitious characters because they aren’t real and you can’t really offend them… hehe. And plus, by using someone’s name and/or image without their permission, they have legal grounds to sue you (that's why movies, tv shows, and books need to get permission before they can mention product names or use songs, and also why actors can sue tabloids for printing false stories sometimes).
I know I probably won’t get sued because I doubt any of the actors would read fanfiction (or mine in particular), but I still think it’s kinda rude to use their names without asking.
Next chapter: "Movie Night" - Hermione, Harry, Ron, and Ginny's reactions to the Harry Potter books, movies, merchandise, and... fancition!!! You'll love it! I promise.
