Author's Note:
This is my first songfic and also the evidence of what happens when reading a Harry Potter fic while listening to a Mandy Moore CD at 2:30 in the morning. I hope you like it.

I'll always remember...it was late afternoon

She wanted to get away. Away from her family, her so called friends, and especially away from the stench of the dungbombs set off by her older brothers in the common room. Not knowing what else to do on this quiet Saturday afternoon Ginny Weasley found herself walking out onto the school grounds towards the lake. That was when she saw him.

It lasted forever...and ended so soon

You were all by yourself, staring up at the dark gray sky

I was changed

Sitting on the edge of the lake was Draco Malfoy, knees pulled up to his chest and staring off into space. He was completely oblivious to the fact that Ginny was approaching him. Upon reaching the spot where Draco sat Ginny noticed something was different about him. He was not the usual cocky and cruel Draco Malfoy who insulted her and her family on numerous occasions; this Draco Malfoy almost seemed fragile and weak. After thinking for a moment she sat down next to him determined to find out what was bothering him.

"Are you all right Draco," asked Ginny. Slowly he turned to see who dared to disturb him.

"I'm fine," he said in a whisper, "go away."

"You're obviously not fine Malfoy, you actually said five words to me and none of them were insulting," she said attempting to joke with the platinum-haired boy.

"What, did you decide to stop swooning over Potter for five seconds and try a real man?" Draco managed to say this without any emotion or even his usual sneer, just a monotone voice and two glazed over eyes. "Was that good enough for you Weasley? Now go away."

"Not a chance. You look like hell and I want to help," she offered.

"What could you possibly help me with?" He regained his distanced look. "You could not possibly fathom...never mind, go away. I want to be alone."

"Maybe I couldn't possibly fathom whatever it is that is bothering you, maybe I could. Maybe it would help if you talk about whatever it is that is going on in that slick little head of yours. I've always been told I was a good listener and I can keep a secret." She smiled hopefully at the sad boy. In her heart she believed that not even someone like Malfoy should ever look that sad. And that made what she said next sound crazy. "I want to help you. You can trust me Draco." The two sat there for what must have seemed like forever just staring out at the lake while Draco contemplated on weather or not to confide in the red-headed girl.

"My father is a Death Eater," he started. Ginny didn't say a word to this, she just listened. "When I was growing up he always told me that if the Dark Lord were still around I would be a Death Eater. He raised me in his ways, Muggles and Mudbloods are bad, Purebloods are good. I've never know any other way to be. But I also never thought I would ever have to become a Death Eater, and then he rose.

"There is this process you have to go through before you can become a full Death Eater, a series of tasks and rituals. One of the tasks is to join the others on a raid. My turn to go with them was last night. My father came for me and took me to meet with the other Death Eaters. We raided a small Muggle village. They set fire to the houses and then tortured all of those people using the Curciatas Curse and other cruel curses and hexes. I was in sort of a shock, I just stood there watching them do this to these poor people, I didn't know what to do.

"Then they killed everyone, the whole village, until only this little girl was left. She was holding a teddy bear standing there in her nightgown crying, she couldn't have been more than five years old. She came up to me and asked me to help her wake up her mum and dad. I told her to run away to the next village but she wouldn't leave. Then my father came up to me and told me to kill this girl. He wanted me to kill a five year old girl. And I just stood there, I couldn't think, I couldn't move. So he did it. He killed the girl with one flick of his wand, as if it were nothing, as if that poor little girl was nothing more than an annoying fly.

Those poor people were defenseless, they didn't stand a chance, and there was nothing they could do about it. And the Death Eaters were just..." Draco's voice trailed off as he began to cry. He buried his face in his hands and turned so that Ginny hopefully wouldn't see him. What she did next took him by complete surprise. She put her arms around him and held him close to her, gently rocking back and forth, saying nothing.

In places no one would find, all your feelings so deep inside

It was then that I realized, that forever was in your eyes

The moment I saw you cry.

She didn't know what to do or say. Draco Malfoy was crying in her arms because he had finally seen the cruelty of Voldemort's ways. Part of her was in shock, part of her was sad for all of those people, but the biggest part of her was happy that Draco had finally seen the light of all that is good. She held him closer as he continued to cry.

I wanted to hold you; I wanted to make it go away

I wanted to know you; I wanted to make your everything alright

"Thank you, Ginny for listening," Draco said looking her in eyes for the first time. "I truly appreciate it."

"Where do you think you'll go from here?" She turned her face and met his eyes.

"I'm not sure, but I can't do what Lord Voldemort asks of me, I can't kill. I won't kill." His features started to harden, "I don't want to be like them. I won't be like my father."

"You won't," Ginny echoed with strong emotion. "You've already proven you're better than him."

"But my father won't allow me to turn away from the Dark Lord. I think that if I told him that I don't want to be a Death Eater he will kill me," he said seriously.

"Then we'll go talk to Dumbledore, he'll do anything to save a soul from the Dark Side," said Ginny standing up extending her hand to him. "What do you say?"

"Let's go to Dumbledore." Draco took her hand and they walked to the castle.
