Chapter 5: Fight, Fight!
"Well it's nice of you to join us Constance I believe it is." Constance rushed into History of Magic letting the door slam behind her. The whole class looked back at her, they were doubling with Slytherin.
"Oh new meat," she heard one of the Slytherins exclaim quietly.
"Sorry Professor, I was in the hospital wing."
"Visiting Potter, yes your friends have informed me. Please sit down Ms-"
"Miller." Constance Miller, now that's what her last name was. But... wait, no. Hermione thought to her self but made a audible gasp. Constance took a seat between Ron and Hermione where Harry usually sat.
Later in class Professor Binns surprised them by asking them a question: "Does any one know the name of this famous wizard?" Of course, Hermione's hand shot strait into the air. "Let's try someone else for a change, how about you Ms. Miller?"
" Stew Harris," Constance said as if like she was saying it like it was something everybody knew.
"Very good, Ten points for Gryffindor..." Professor went on rambling about Stew Harris while Hermione just stared at Constance blankly, Constance was almost falling asleep, she didn't notice. Some one was actually as smart or maybe even SMARTER than Hermione! She couldn't believe it! Ron noticed her getting a bit upset: "Constance you want to switch seats?" he whispered to Constance.
"Sure, why not." Ron and Constance made a fast transfer with out the teacher noticing.
"Hermione, why are you giving her the evil eye?" Ron whispered into Hermione's ear.
"I am not giving her the evil eye," Hermione replied smugly.
"Yes you are."
"The girl is as bloody smart as I am."
"How do you know? Maybe this is her best subject? You're overreacting Herm."
"Am not, she has no enthusiasm in her answer, she looks bored, and she's not paying attention to class, but still knows the answer to the question when asked."
"I'm not paying attention, but I still get pretty decent grades."
"But, you never know the answer when asked out of chance. You just sit there like a stupid git."
"Hermione, why do you care?"
"I've always been the top of the class, now I'm not going to be."
"That's no big deal."
"Yes it is," Hermione whispered rather loudly.
"Shh... we don't know this is true, how can you be so certain."
"How can I not?"
"Well..." Then he saw everyone getting up, it was the end of class. "Come on Herm. we've got to go see Harry before-" He looked at his schedule and groaned:" Potions! Oh no, no, no, no, no, no I refuse to go to that stupid class.
"Where's Constance?" Hermione glanced around, Constance was no where in site.
"Where did she disappear too?"
"Shootmyga!" said a voice close to them, but they didn't see who from.
"Who's there?" Ron put a protective arm in front of Hermione.
Some one appeared, "It got away from me again."
"You can... can... "
"I hate not having a wand." Constance had literally disappeared, but now she was visible. "Sorry to give you such a fright, things just happen to me sometimes. Since I've lived in the muggle world these past years I've grown very fond of the memory charm."
"How did you-?" Ron and Hermione were at loss for words. They couldn't comprehend what had just happened. "We don't learn that till seventh year!" Hermione gasped.
"I know, my hands just some how figured it out by themselves. I don't even know how too."
"You're hands-"
"Seem to have a mind of their own."
"They-"
"Guess they were bored or something. "
"Whoa, hold up. Ok, this is to weird. One you seem to be semi-like me. Two you are smarter than me. THREE you're a parselmouth. FOUR you're stealing Harry away from Ginny. FIVE you are born on HALLOWEEN!!" Hermione was furious, she was so jealous it made her mad.
"One I'm not smarter than you. Two I'm not a parselmouth. Three I have an attraction to Harry but he loves Ginny. Four I hate being born on that stupid day!" Constance screamed back at her blinking back tears.
"YOU'RE LYING! You are a parselmouth, I saw you talk to Harry. He didn't notice of course because he's one, too! Harry is falling HEAD OVER HEALS FOR YOU!" Hermione retorted.
"I...I..." Constance disappeared again this time she did it on purpose and didn't come back to them. Invisible, she ran out of the room crying, she couldn't help her birthday. Or that her mom taught her things that you weren't supposed to learn until you were seventeen. She didn't think Harry was falling "head over heals" for her, not at all. She wished and prayed she wasn't the way she was but that's who she was and she couldn't change that.
When she was invisible like that, she could do a spell that let her run through walls. She ran right into the common room, everyone was gone. She was alone. Constance mumbled something, sat down on the floor, curled up into a little ball, and rocked back a forth just thinking of everything she hoped, dreamed, feared, hated, and loved.
"Hermione, what's wrong with you?!" Ron gasped when he was sure Constance had left the class room.
"I...I...don't know Ron, something compelled me to get mad."
"You're jealous of her aren't you?"
"No."
"Yes you are, you're completely jealous of her," Ron said as if he had just discovered a life altering situation. They started walking towards the door, things in hand.
"I don't see how you can find such amusement in this?"
"Hermione Granger jealous of the new girl! It's hilarious!" Ron laughed for awhile about this while walking down the hall, making Hermione almost burst into flames. He suddenly stopped. "Miller... her last name is Miller? I need to go to the library." Ron gasped turning the opposite direction.
"Ron Weasley going to the library, I must be dreaming."
"Her last name is Miller?" Ron repeated in a daze, while walking towards the library.
"Fine!" Hermione jogged up to his side and followed him to the library.
"Constance?" Constance had only been in there for 30 minutes when some one walked in.
"Yes?" Constance said meekly her face tear stained, "Who is it?"
"Me."
"Me, who's that?"
"Harry."
"Go away."
"What happened?" Harry had been released from the hospital wing, he got a note from Madam Pomfrey that said he didn't need to go to the rest of his classes which was luckily Potions.
"Nothing."
"Constance, you can tell me."
"I don't belong here, I should be home-schooled still. I hate it here!" Constance's face was out of Harry's view.
"It's your first day here, you've got to at least try Hogwarts, and it's actually a pretty good place."
"I don't belong here."
"Constance, how do you know that? Maybe here you're going to find your destiny."
"What destiny, I'm destined to be a sorceress already! How can I change that big of fate?"
"You're the one who chooses your own fate. You're the one to make your destiny!" Harry said grabbing Constance by the arm and turned her around to face him. "Listen to me! Never say you don't belong! Everyone belongs! You're kidding yourself if you think you don't belong!" Harry shouted at her.
"How do you know!? Why do you think I belong here? Hmm- what's so important that I should be here for it!?" Constance shouted back jumping to her feet. Harry couldn't answer her question, he didn't know the answer so how could he? Their eyes met at this moment, Amber and Green, intense to the max! Constance was speechless at her own words. Constance started crying again. She fell onto the chair behind her. "I'm sorry Harry. I know you're just trying to help, but I don't think anything will help me. I'm a lost cause."
"You are not a lost cause, you're human."
"Yeah, I'm human alright. I'm anything, but perfect. I don't think this whole magic thing is for me."
"It's not just a thing it's a gift and you've got a gift in a gift in a gift."
"Hubby whobby whatty?"
"You have the gift of magic and in that gift you have the gift of not needing a wand and in that gift you have the gift to show people things."
"Oh, I get it! A gift in a gift in a gift," they laughed, the mood was lightened.
"Right! Anyway, why were you in here by yourself?"
"Hermione and I sort of-" Constance looked at her clock," Look at the time, I have to get to Potions, and I don't want to get Snape on my back. See you later Harry." Constance tossed her bag on her back and ran out of the common room. Man that girl could give you the slip.
"There's.... no....Miller!" Ron exclaimed breaking the silence between him a Hermione. "Come on Herm. we've got to get to ...Potions." Ron said checking his watch, stuffing the book in his bag, and getting up.
"Ok." Hermione picked up her bag and walked with Ron to Potions. How she hated that class. Ron was getting so excited, he didn't understand why Hermione wasn't excited about the discovery. "You ok Hermione?"
"Fine, perfectly fine. Do I not look fine? Because I'm fine." Hermione's hair was getting in her face so every time she said fine it went in her eyes.
"It's just you're acting... strange. Why aren't you excited? We actually know someone who has the power to-"
"I know, I know! Constance this, Constance that! Just ask the bloody girl out! She's all powerful! Can't you just shut up about the bloody girl!" She made an angry noise and went stomping down the hall ahead of Ron.
"I told you already! Three million times now! I'm not meant to be a sorceress!" Constance lied to Ron yelling. " Come on think Ron. How could it be possible for me to have the power to take over the world?"
"But, you do have the power! You are meant to be a sorceress! You're meant to be all powerful! Even more power than he-who-must-not-be-named." Ron loud enough to match Constance's tone. He was confronting her about what he had found.
"Why can't you just say the stupid name?! Voldemort, Voldemort! What is the bloody problem of saying a stupid name?!" Constance was furious! How could Ron possibly know her secret?
"Constance, clam down. You're becoming irrational-"
"Irrational? IRRATIONAL!! I'm not becoming irrational! You're telling me that I'm meant to be a sorceress and I can barely control my magic!"
"You don't know what you could do with this. You could actually change the way things are!"
"I like the way things are, now! I don't want to change anything! I just want to live my life in peace!"
"Don't you get it? You're never going to have a normal life! You're just too special!"
"Special, I don't think it's special that I'm the way that I am. It's more of a curse!"
"Curse?! How can you possibly call this, this a curse?"
"How can you call it other than a curse? You're not the one who has to live with this "gift"! Get it through that thick skull of yours I REFUSE to even analysis I'm meant to me a sorceress!" Her voice echoed through the common room. All the Gryffindor were oohing and awing at all the right moments but it was sort of nerve racking that they were ALL watching them fight. Constance didn't want every one to know! It was hard to comprehend her destiny for herself, but she didn't want every one to try to figure it out, too!
"I'm sorry Ron."
"For what? What are-" everything froze, everything except Constance. She had to get out of there! She needed to think, everything was just crumbling! And it was only her THRID DAY THERE AT HOGWARTS! She ran out of the room, up the stairs, and the window. Constance held out her left hand mumbled a calling spell, her broom flew to her. She opened the window, set her broom out side, and flew as fast and as hard as she could. Any where but here. I have to get away. She made a swift motion with her left hand and time was moving once more.
"Where is she?"
"She stopped time. She is it! She's the one!" Hermione exclaimed finally taking interest.
"Who opened the window?" Neville said coming down from the boys dormitory pointing back to the stair case.
"She's gone!" Ron said and ran to the window upstairs Hermione following.
"She won't be back, not for awhile," Hermione said shaking her head.
