His Vigilante

Chapter One- Case Open

It was like from a scene out of a movie; everything was out of focus and fuzzy except for the two of them.

"So, how about it? What do you say?"

She tilted her head to the side and looked down to admire her left hand. The solitary stone of the golden ring was small, but that didn't matter. He could have given her a dirty, moss-covered pebble and she would have been just as happy. She was about to burst through her bodily seams.

"Of course I'll marry you, Ronald Weasley!"

Ron pulled Hermione to him and held her close. God, how he needed her, especially in times as dark as those. He kissed her hair and held her tighter.

That's when it happened. They both heard the whoosh! as the spell was cast into the nighttime sky and the screams erupted around them as the picture of a skull and snake-tongued mouth was painted into the clouds.

"Auror Beck!"

"Auror Nelson!"

The two men comparing notes on their latest case looked up to see who was calling them. Mr. Dobbs, a large man with small blue eyes and black curly hair was frantically making his way toward the pair. Even at a distance, the two men could see the red tinge of his face and the nervous twitch of his mustache.

"My office! Now!"

Beck and Nelson shared a glance and marched toward the door labeled:

Dobbs

Head of SCO

Once inside, the men could clearly trace signs of Dobbs's agitation.

"Since you two are already on the Pettigrew case and are our top investigators, I'm assigning you this new case."

"What are the circumstances?" questioned Beck. Dobbs took a moment to run a chubby hand through his hair and loosen his tie.

"A young woman has just been brought in and we have reason to believe that, uh, she is behind the Pettigrew murder."

Nelson who had suddenly become eager to take on this most recent case leaned forward. After all, he and Beck had kept horrible hours on the Pettigrew investigation. It had taken them days just to identify the body of a man who was supposed to have been murdered more than two decades ago. The facts were limited and ambiguous. He knew that coming close to finishing the case was an unmercifully long distance away.

"What's her name?"

"Hermione Granger."

"How can you be sure?" asked Beck.

Beck had heard of her. Who hadn't? She was one of Dumbledore's personal trainees and fought in the Great Battle against the side of the dark. She was a vicious warrior and gave the side of the light a great advantage due to her loyalty. She was vital to the survival of the wizarding world and was renowned as a heroine of her time.

"She confessed."
