Author's Note:
Hi, it’s Sonarous here. This is not my first fanfiction, but I hope nobody read my first one (it was terrible!). This is as in line with the official series as I can make it, but little details might go wrong. If you spot any glaring errors with detail, don’t bother telling me about it because deliberate. I am British (and ashamed of it). If any other nationalities reading out there don’t understand me, it’s just my slang. Or my terrible spelling. Finally – for those of you who hate

Harry sat on the edge of the South Tower, eyes fixed sightlessly on nothing. He was brooding yet again. Coming back from sixth year, he had thought of nothing but Sirius. He dreams were plagued with the image of Sirius falling through the Veil. At other times, he saw the faces of his friends surrounding him. Their mouths opened in what he guessed were supposed to be sympathetic nothings, but there was an accusatory look in their eyes. They blamed him.

He looked past his shoes to the ground, hundreds of feet below. He considered throwing himself off. At least he would die doing what he wanted to do - flying, not fighting for his life.

He moved forward an inch. His eyes watered as the wind pricked sharply behind his glasses, but his vision remained steady and his head did not spin with vertigo at the sight of the drop. He lifted himself on his arms a little, pushing himself forward again. He was perched on the very edge, clinging to the balcony behind him to stay on.

All he had to do was let go.

As he stared down again, he heard something move behind him.

He whipped his head around. From the other side of the roof, a voice drifted to his ears. The voice was clear, pure, and heart breaking.

You were once my one companion

You were all that mattered

You were once a friend and father

Then my world was shattered.

Harry almost let go of the stone in shock as the words registered in his brain. Quickly, he pulled himself back up and listened again.

Wishing you were somehow here again

Wishing you were somehow near

Sometimes it seemed

If I just dreamed

Somehow you would be here.

Wishing I could hear your voice again

Knowing that I never would.

Dreaming of you won't help me to do

All that you dreamed I could

Harry felt a familiar lump rise in his throat. Whoever was singing could be singing for him. He began to move around the roof, hoping to catch a glimpse of the Shadow Singer.

Passing bells and sculptured angels

Cold and monumental

Seem for you the wrong companions

You were warm and gentle.

Too many years

Fighting back tears

Why can't the past just die?

Wishing you were somehow here again

Knowing we must say goodbye,

Try to forgive, teach me to live,

Give me the strength to try.

No more memories,

No more silent tears,

No more gazing across the wasted years.

Help me say goodbye.

The singer lapsed into silence and Harry let out a long, slow breath.

"Who is there?"

Harry jumped. He didn't expect the Shadow Singer, who was definitely female, to hear him. He stepped into a patch of moonlight and let her see him.

The singer was smaller than him, wearing a black cloak and a navy scarf that had been hastily tied around her face. A pair of breath-taking eyes gleamed at Harry. Her skin was very white. Harry did not recognise the crest on her cloak.

He did not get long to look at her though. She stepped forward and put her hand on his head. All thoughts of Sirius, suicide and the prophecy left his mind and the lack of sleep for two weeks overtook him. His eyes grew heavy.

The singer grabbed his arms and swung him behind her like a cloak, hauling him up onto her back. Harry remained only just awake. She went back into the building, and headed for the Gryffindor Tower. As she went, she sang to him again.

I felt pain before

But none like yours

You're strong and you can get by

You have your friends,

I have the dark

But at least you know me now.

I can help you

Sleep

Harry was dimly aware of being laid down on something, and a warm covering being tucked around him. He felt a pillow being placed under his head. A hand stroked through his hair.

You are so weary

Don't let the darkness take you

I love you

I have watched your tears

I know you don't want to do

What you must...

But forget now,

Rest now,

Listen to the lover's lullaby.

As Harry finally drifted off into his first proper sleep, the girl kissed him tenderly on the head, and melted away into the night.

Author notes: What do you think? *chews nails nervously* I tried to get it to be vaguely soft, but I’m not sure…oh by the way, the songs NOT from POTO in this chapter are registered to moi. If you steal these songs, I will sue your guts, and then roast them over a barbeque. Oh, BTW – pleeease review!
