Chapter 2

Call of the Evil

Harry Potter awoke with a start. He looked around. The familiar sight of the Hospital Wing greeted him. Madam Pomfrey and Dumbledore were bending over him, a look of anxiety on their faces. Harry smiled weakly at them.

"What happened?" he asked.

"Don't you remember anything, Harry?" said Dumbledore quietly.

Hesitantly, Harry slowly recounted everything that he could remember, till the time he had felt angry when Voldemort had said things against Sirius. He couldn't remember anything further.

"I see," said Dumbledore.

"What happened?" Harry asked again.

"I'll tell you later. You need rest now, Harry. Poppy, give him the potion. We shall talk tomorrow morning, Harry."

The next morning, when Harry woke up, he was feeling much better and much more relaxed than he'd felt since Sirius' death. The thought of his Godfather brought tears to his eyes, but he blinked them away and rose from the bed. Madam Pomfrey appeared immediately.

"You're up? Take a shower and get ready." She indicated a fresh set of clothes laid out for him.

Harry obliged. After his bath, he went over to the Great Hall and found Dumbledore waiting for him. They had a pleasant breakfast, talking of casual things. Harry was glad to see that he didn't have anymore hateful feelings towards Dumbledore, and couldn't feel Voldemort trying to attack his brain anymore. After they'd finished breakfast, Dumbledore said quietly "Now, Harry, you need to know what happened. You've succeeded in creating a wall around your brain to fend off Voldemort. I think it was accidental, though. Anyway, it has done you some good, as Voldemort certainly won't be plaguing you anymore."

"But how could I do it, Professor?" said Harry.

"You are a powerful wizard, Harry, and you've been marked by the Dark Lord himself. Now, I want to know whether you'd like to spend the rest of your holidays at Hogwarts or go back home."

"I would rather stay here, Sir."

"I was hoping you'd say that. I was looking forward to your company."

Harry merely smiled.

"Anything troubling you, my boy?"

"No, nothing."

"What is it?"

"I was just wondering, I wanted to find out some things about my ancestors."

"What do you want to know?"

"About the Potters and the Evanses."

"Well, Harry, the Potters were a family of renowned wizards. All of them were extremely powerful, and excellent fliers. The Evanses were all Muggles, so I cannot tell you much about them. You'll have to ask your Aunt."

"She'll never tell me anything."

I'll tell you.

Harry got the shock of his life. "I don't want to know from you."

That's really unfair. I can tell you what no one else can, Harry.

"Get out of my head!"

Dumbledore looked at Harry with concern. According to the tests he'd performed, no one could penetrate Harry's brain now. If Voldemort had done that, it could mean only one thing. But that wasn't possible, was it? Thoughts raced through Dumbledore's head as he watched his favourite student battle with his own brain.

Believe me, Harry. I am your grandfather. Lily was my daughter.

"Nice try. Now get lost."

I am not lying, Harry. Because you have my blood, I can still access your brain. Ask Dumbledore.

Harry did. Dumbledore nodded, though looking very confused. Harry nearly fainted, but he managed to pull himself up.

"Why are you telling me this now?"

I didn't know earlier. If I had, do you think I would have killed my only child? I was trying to trace my one time sweetheart, your grandmother. I had fallen in love with a Squib. She had married a Muggle, but we still had our affair going on. She already had a daughter by him, but Lily was my child. I discovered the fact today.

"I don't care. You can go to hell for all I care. Now leave me alone. I am NOT your grandson!"

You are, Harry. You are my heir. Come, join me, Harry.

There was another blast of white light and Dumbledore's office shattered. He was just in time to catch a fainting Harry in his arms.
