It all started on a warm summer's night in America. A daughter was born; a beautiful violet-eyed, silver haired daughter, and was then rejected. She was an earth daughter, a magic user among her people. She was banished from her birth parents and sent to live with the elders. She didn't even have a name. The elders called her "Doe" which stood for "daughter of earth". She had no last name, for what could you call the most powerful priestess born in almost two millennium?
Doe grew rapidly, and learned even quicker. She was a healer by age three, and was deemed too pure for mortal man by age five. Her only friends were animals. No human dared touch her, since that night...
She was four years old. It was late into the summer months, and Doe was running with her wolf brothers and watching her eagle sisters. Not as a human, but as a wolf. She had learned that Animagus form when she was told that she was too young to be out at dark. She had already touched her wolf brothers and knew the shape to take. Her brothers had run too close to a populated area. A white man shot her while she was in that wolf form. Losing her concentration, Doe transfigured before his eyes. Her memories after that were nothing, but her wolf brothers told her that the man with the gun came to her. As soon as he touched her, he gave a cry of great pain. All his life force left him, and Doe was healed. She had taken his life to save her own. Doe mistakenly told her guardians this. Now no member of the tribe will come near her. Doe could not understand their fear. Who had bathed her when she was young? Who had fed her? Who had taught her how to walk? Could they not see that she was not a life stealer?
At the end of her seventh summer, Doe was sitting by the river when an eagle landed next to her. The eagle's eyes told her of the freedom one could have when in flight. It was then, at that very moment, that Doe decided that she would have wings. She asked the eagle to spread her wings far apart, so that the pattern could be learned. Doe touched the talons, then the beak, and then the rest of the body. She was ready. She knew all she needed to know to be able to make the body. The only thing was flight.
Being a wolf was no problem; it was like crawling, real fast. She could not think of an experience that would allow her to understand flight. "Oh well," she said. "I will have to learn that later." She closed her eyes and thought of the eagle. When she opened them, she noticed that she could see in greater detail. She looked down into the reflection of the river. She had done it! She was an eagle. Unfortunately, she still had her violet eyes and silver coloring, but she didn't care. She wanted to tell everyone!
"Look at me!" she cried. "Look at me!"
The eagle beside her looked and said, "Impressive, priestess."
Doe was scared. "You can talk to me? What is your name? Why have I not heard you before?"
The eagle looked at Doe. "My name is Fierl. You have heard me many times, priestess. I call to you to join me every day."
Doe thought for a moment. "I understand. Now that I'm an eagle, I can speak your tongue."
The eagle smiled. "That is correct, priestess. But even more, now that you have talked to me, you have the ability to understand me when you are in your human form. As you do with the wolves."
Doe changed back to a human, and bowed before her sister. "You must think me a great fool. Knowing I can speak to the wolves, and forgetting that I would be able to speak to you."
Fierl said "No, priestess. I do not think you are a fool, I think you are a child. You shall overlook easy ways to find the harder. It is in your nature."
Doe looked at her new friend. "Please, grant me a request. Call me Doe. All my wolf brothers do, and I would feel honored for my eagle sister to do the same."
Fierl looked at Doe. "It would be my greatest honor, priest--Doe. In return, may I grant you a request as well?"
Doe hugged the eagle. "If it would not be too much trouble, could you teach me to fly?"
Flying was all Doe thought it would be and more. She flew with her sisters from morning until midday. She rested then until dusk, and ran with her wolf brothers. But as she was playing with her brothers, she would look at the sky and a great joy entered her heart thinking of her next day's flight.
Doe's life went mostly unchanged for the next two years. She did manage to learn how to form three new animals. A snake, for sneaking out at night, since her guardians have learned to look for the violet eyed silver wolf. A puma, for looking at the white men, since that animal was now protected. She didn't change into the puma often, since a silver puma would be hunted for the white men to study. The last, and hardest, to learn was the shape of a horse. She had to make herself so much bigger than her normal size; the pain was not something she relished. Getting smaller, as in becoming a snake, didn't hurt. Doe believed that the enlarging of her bones was the trouble. Maybe when she was older, she could do this with no pain.
On her ninth summer, she was summoned before the council. Her prison keepers (as she had come to think of them) brought her to the tribal hut for her meeting. She was blindfolded and instructed to sit in a corner, to avoid any unnecessary touching. She listened to the council talk about her as if she were not alive.
"We need to test her."
"And if she fails?"
"Then we know for sure."
"But remember what happened last time."
"I have to know for sure."
"Stand up, young one." A deep rich voice called to her. Doe realized that they were finally talking to her. "Follow my voice."
Doe walked toward the disembodied voice. "Stop, young one. Hold out your hands."
She did as she was instructed. Something was placed into her hands. She was scared as she felt the item change shape. After a few moments, the thing stopped moving, and the hut was quiet. Then the hut erupted in screams and cheers. Doe screamed with fright, and transfigured into an eagle. This removed the blindfold and she was able to see again. She changed back into a human, and was wary of the humans she has never seen before. One, who looked as if he was the eldest, approached her. His twinkling blue eyes relaxed her.
"Do you realize what just happened?" he looked at her and smiled AS HE TOUCHED HER SHOULDER!!!
Doe never loved someone as she loved this man for his trust of her. "How do you know the language I was taught? No one else in the tribe speaks this language, besides the pris-elders."
His long white hair and beard framed his face as he gazed down at her. "You were taught English, so that you may leave this tribe some day. But that's neither here nor there. I must tell you that I am very pleased at your performance today. You were able to hold the scepter, and it reduced its size to fit your smaller hand." Doe looked at the stick; it looked no different than the ones that she threw for the wolves. "That scepter burns the hand of anyone that touches it. Well, anyone that isn't a priestess." His twinkling blue eyes hypnotized her. "And the fact that it changed for you tells me that you are more than what you think. Although I do wonder how long you have been able to become an eagle."
Doe wanted to make him happy. That was all she could think about. This man who had no fear of her. She saw none of the others in the council, couldn't hear their discussions about what they witnessed. "I am able to change into other animals as well."
The council stopped all discussions. Doe saw them staring at her, and started to back out of the hut. Before the man with the twinkling blue eyes could stop her, she was out of the hut and changed into a wolf.
It was after dark when she dared to return home. Her guardians were happy to see her, even if they would not touch her. She was to go to The Salem Academy. There she would learn to use the gifts she was given. Doe was packed the next day and then was on her way. As she looked back at her home, all she could think was "Goodbye, my brothers and sisters. I leave with a crying heart for you, but I feel nothing for the prison keepers." What wonders would await her at the end of her journey?
Seven years have passed, and Doe has learned to control her emotions and hide her true powers. She was now known as Doe Enigma. The Headmistress of Salem gave her the last name, due to her mysterious nature. No one at the Academy wanted to be her friend, and she had not pursued them to become theirs. All that was in the past now. It was her Graduation day, the day that she could leave this prison behind forever and be her own person.
Or so she thought.
As she was packing her things, she felt a presence behind her. She turned slowly, giving the person time to announce themselves. When she was fully turned around, her eyes grew wider with fright and recognition.
"What are you doing here?!" she was almost screaming.
Those eyes, those blue eyes, that she would do anything for, gazed back at her. "I have come to ask you to accompany me on a special journey."
Doe was tempted to tell him where he could put his journey. "Who are you? I was never given your name. And will I have to change robes?"
"No, your robes are fine. My name is Albus Dumbledore. I am the Headmaster of Hogwarts. I will go into detail later, if you will allow me. Touch this book, and we will be on our way."
Doe closed her eyes, touched the book, and once again said goodbye to her home. What was to become of her now, she wondered.
She didn't have to wonder long. She opened her eyes and saw that she was on a very populated area. "Where are we? And what is Hogwarts?" She looked around and saw a sign "Privet Drive? I have never heard of this place. Why are we here?"
Dumbledore said, "We are here to meet a friend. Her name is Arabella Figg. She will be here soon to help us. The rest will be explained later."
No sooner than he finished saying that did Mrs. Figg come up the walk.
"Albus, is this her?" Doe took an almost immediate disliking to her.
"Yes, Arabella. Her things made it to your house?"
"A few minutes ago, that's how I knew to come."
Arabella looked as if she was not happy with her life. Doe almost wished she was a life stealer, that way she could end this woman's misery. Doe knew that she was only able to take a life if hers was in danger.
Dumbledore looked at Doe. "You are to go with Mrs. Figg, Doe. I will contact you at a later date." With that he was gone. Doe looked at her, the Figg, and wondered where this woman would take her.
Doe followed the Figg to a house. The Figg pointed up the stairs. "Your room is the second on the left. Loo's first on right. Oh yes, I forgot. What I call the 'loo' is what you American's call the 'bathroom'. Go unpack and get some sleep. We have lots to do tomorrow." Doe went up the stairs to her new cell. With a heavy heart she looked out the window at the houses surrounding her new prison. Why was she brought here, and how was she going to escape?
Harry Potter was writing to his friends, Ron and Hermione. He wrote of his boredom, and the feeling of imprisonment. He was tired of being at his aunt and uncle's, but Dumbledore wanted him here to reap the benefits of the blood magic that has protected him.
He attached the notes to Hedwig, his beautiful snowy owl. "Ok, I need you to get these delivered right away. I don't need an answer, so you're free to fly around and have some fun before you get back."
With a last loving pat to her head, Harry sent the bird off and closed the window. He tried not to think of his godfather, Sirius Black. Harry could not help but think that the void that he fell into was not death, but a gateway. There had to be another side of that emptiness that would allow Sirius to leave. Surely he was not destined to be alone and unloved forever. He knew that he was almost another son to the Weasley's, but he can't help but think that he wouldn't be thought of that way if the Sorting Hat had it's way. He would have been placed in Slytherin, and his best friend would probably have been Draco Malfoy. He frowned at that thought. What would he think of Ron and Hermione then? Would he be like Crabbe and Goyle, always hanging on Draco's coattails?
Harry laughed at that thought. It felt good to laugh. He allowed himself to really feel this laugh, and enjoy it. Then there was a pounding at the window. Harry turned and saw a snowy owl, but it wasn't Hedwig. As he opened the window, the owl flew up into the air, then came through the window gracefully. Harry waited until the owl had landed before reaching to retrieve the scrap of paper attached to its leg. He unfolded the note and read the disturbing words:
This owl has a mate.
Only one for him.
You must find his.
And you find yours.
A.
"How strange." Harry said. What did the note mean? How was he supposed to 'find' a mate when he couldn't leave the house? Was this owl meant for Hedwig? If so, did that mean that the owner of the owl was to be Harry's 'mate'? Who was 'A'? Too many questions for one night. Harry gave the owl some food and water, and decided to write Hermione about this. "Dammit," he muttered. He has just sent Hedwig off, with no requested time for a return. Harry went to bed, deciding to worry about this in the morning.
Down the street, Doe listened to the sounds of the city. As she was about to get into bed, she sensed a great sadness. She began to sing a calming tune, the one that helped her sleep whenever she thought of her freedom as a child. How could she believe that hut where she was partially raised was a prison? Her guardians never told her 'no', nor did they stop her from being herself. She was happy there, although she didn't know it then. All she wanted was to go back. But she believed her destiny had to do with this smelly, overcrowded area. Doe listened to the sounds of the Figg sleeping, and quietly opened her window. She closed her eyes and remembered the freedom of the eagle. She was able to transfigure! Doe hadn't tried this since she was in front of the council. A few wing stretches and she was airborne. Doe wanted to cry for the other eagles in the area to join her, but was afraid that someone may get confused and shoot her again. She flew towards the only thing she knew, the Privet Drive sign. She landed and looked as a beautiful snowy owl flew towards a house. A wizard lives there, Doe thought. She took a few minutes to get her bearings again, and followed the owl's path. She saw a rather thin boy read a letter that was attached to the owl's leg. She sat on the windowsill, but the boy with the lightning-shaped scar on his forehead never noticed her. No one ever does. The owl looked right at her, though, and his eyes narrowed in recognition. Doe was immediately frightened. She was seen! She let herself fall towards the ground before taking flight again. She could not allow that young wizard to see her. He would try to kill her, like that other man did. She slowed down and realized that she had flown so far in fear that she was lost. There were no lights for her to see any streets.
Doe landed in a field. She was scared, so she changed into her human form. If someone came along, she couldn't just ask if they knew the Figg. What was the Figg going to say when she found out Doe was gone? Would Albus send her away again? She had to get back before the morning. Doe looked around and then changed again, this time into a wolf. She raised her nose to the air, sniffed heavily, and found out that the Figg was to the south. She began to run towards the smell of cats that she knew was the Figg's house. As she came closer to the smell, she noticed that the sun was coming up. Doe ran between two buildings and changed back into an eagle. Once she was airborne, she recognized the surrounding area, and flew towards the house she was brought to the night before. Doe could only hope that she made it back before the Figg was awake.
