How It All Happened

Sarah Black

Story Summary:
This is my favorite story by me! It's MWPP and I think the chapters get better and better as I develop my skills... well there's some L/J and no love/hate thing, I use mostly original characters but it is hard to get away from when writing an MWPP!

"Sirius... do you know where Remus is? I need his help with my DADA project..." James whispered in Sirius' ear.

"What? Sorry James I wasn't listening" Sirius answered loudly earning a stern look from the librarian... Madam Pince.

"Forget it I'll ask Peter..." James said while he wondered how Sirius managed to stay so... Sirius!

"What is it James?" Peter squeaked.

"What is what Peter?" James said although he knew perfectly well what Peter was on about.

"What is it you wanted to ask me?" Peter said, clearly excited out of his wits... he always liked to be important... maybe he just got sick of always being the guard when they were out doing pranks, but Peter was so clumsy that they didn't really have a choice...

Earlier in the year when they let him play the most important role (keeping the bag with toads safe until he was to put them in the stew for the Slytherins) he screwed it all up and put it in the teachers stew instead... they were in detention for weeks...

Well anyway back to the point...

"do you know where Remus is?" James asked

Peter was about to answer when Sirius snapped out of it and said: "Remus went to take care of his sick mother..."

"Thanks Sirius..." James frowned...

"Now who's gonna help me with the DADA project?" He then added in a whiny voice.

"Is perfect Potter having problems in the DADA class?"

A very unwelcome voice hissed.

"get out of here Snape" Sirius snapped.

"It's a library you can't kick me out of here..." Snape said and smirked.

...James and Snape had been enemies ever since their first Potions class. They had been forced to pair up to make their potion. After the class Snape had cursed him because he hadn't done his part of the potion properly. You see James had been passing notes to Sirius (who was working with Remus) and was distracted. The Potions master... Professor Nott always favored Slytherins so Snape didn't even lose house points! And James had to spend two weeks in the hospital wing...

"Yeah... your right about that Snape... but... I could beat you up!" Sirius said hotly.

"No! Sirius don't. Lets just leave I can't get any work done anyway because we can't find Remus" James was trying to calm his friend down a bit.

"What is going on here? Are you boys fighting?" Madam Pince had arrived at the scene and was glaring at them all in turn.

"No, we were just leaving... weren't we guys?" James shot Sirius and Peter meaningful looks.

Sirius murmured something about Snape being a slimy git, and Peter just squeaked something intelligible to the human ear.

Then all three of them walked out.

When they got to the Griffindor common room Remus was already waiting for them in an armchair near the fire.

"Remus! Where've you been?" James said when he saw him sitting there.

"Nowhere." He answered a bit to quickly.

"Is your mom OK?" Sirius asked.

"What?" Remus said, looking rather confused.

"Your mom, you said you had to go take care of her cause she was sick" Peter said before Sirius could answer.

"Your mom's sick?" A caring female voice said.

They all looked up.

Lily smiled and blushed a little at the attention.

"Uh yea..." Remus said uncertainly.

"Oh I'm sorry... I hope she gets well soon..." Lily said and smiled sympathetically at Remus.

"Anyway... Remus can you help me with this DADA thing I have to do..."

*

"REMUS!!!" Sirius called very loudly... actually he called it so loudly that it echoed five times through the common room.

"It's no use Sirius, It's that time of the month again." James said soothingly to a voiceless Sirius (he had yelled too loudly and his voice would probably be permanently damaged...)

"What time?" Peter said out of his Potions assignment.

"You know the time he disappears. Haven't you guys noticed? Remus always disappears once a month... I've been trying to find a pattern... It can't just be random..." James pondered out loud.

"Oh come of it James! It's not like he's a werewolf or anything! They had just got through a chapter about werewolves in DADA class and since then all Sirius would talk about... James always noticed how Remus looked scared around Sirius lately... Maybe that was why he had been hanging around Peter a lot... although when asked he would say he was helping him (Peter) with homework.

Remus was best at school... always straight A's except in Transfiguration... Peter and him (Remus) were terrible at transfiguring objects. While James and Sirius were the best students in the year at Transfiguration. James was a very good student in just about everything but he was having difficulties in Potions... which really bothered him because it was the only class they had with the Slytherins. And Snape was so good at Potions... he didn't want anyone to know, but he actually envied Snape of his Potions talent, sad right?

James often wished that he had flying with the Slytherins instead of the Ravenclaws because he was an exceptionally good flyer. The captain of the Griffindor Quidditch team had already asked him to try out for the team when he got into second year. He could hardly wait.

Sirius was an OK flyer but he said he didn't trust brooms "too small" he would say and grin insanely.

"James! Are. You. a. werewolf?" Sirius gasped each word out while he jumped up and down on the sofa.

"NO! Sirius for the last time I am not a werewolf!" James was getting annoyed and often when he got annoyed he started to massage his temples. All this bouncing was making him dizzy.

The portrait swung open revealing a very tired looking Remus.

"Re-mus. Are. You. A. Were-wolf?" Sirius gasped still bouncing. James threw a pillow at Sirius and to a terrified looking Remus he said, "Ignore him, he's been asking everyone this question all morning... he's obsessed!"

"Am not" said a very ruffled looking Sirius.

"Are too" James answered back

"Am not"

"Are too"

"Am not"

"SHUT UP!!!" Their friends in the common room shouted at them.

James and Sirius quieted and sat down, they tried to look like angels but failed miserably partly because of their hair looked like bird nests made out of black feathers, (James' hair was always like that but Sirius' hair only looked like that because James had thrown the pillow at him) and partly cause the both had silly grins on their faces that said: "Yup we are insane"

Remus giggled a little but still looked frightened.

"So are you?" Sirius said and looked at Remus

"So am I what" Remus said looking ready to run as far away as possible.

"A were-oomph" Sirius tried to say but James nudged him in the ribs so that's all that came out.

"leave it" James hissed to Sirius between his teeth, but in his mind a plan was forming.

*

"Do you have any moon charts?" James asked Madam Pince innocently.

"Of course I do" She snapped at him and stalked off to get them.

"I'm not sure about this" Peter whispered.

"We have to make sure, anyway you didn't see the look on his face when I asked him if he was a werewolf..." Sirius whispered back.

"Here you are boys, you can't take them with you though... And if you tear them you'll have to pay the damage" Madam Pince growled as she handed them the charts.

"Thanks" James said and took the moon charts.

"The three of them walked over to where all the tables were and looked for an empty one. There were no empty ones.

"Hi James, Sirius, Peter... where's Remus?" A girl with red hair and green eyes said, it was Lily.

"Hey Lily... um Remus is um er yeah there." James said.

"Oh... okay then... Why don't you guys come sit with me and Celestina?" Lily offered and smiled.

"okay..." James said and grinned in a very silly manner.

Lily giggled a bit and pointed at the table at the far end of the library.

"There's our table" She smiled and started to walk towards it.

Sirius slapped James on the back side of his head and told him he was and idiot and Peter whispered something that sounded like... "idiot, how are we suppose to do this in secret now?"

"Relax, it'll be all right..." James had doubts, but he didn't show it.

by now they had reached the table, and they could see a blond girl humming a song as she copied Lily's homework for History of magic.

"This is Celestina, and these are James, Sirius and Peter."

Lily grinned as she started pointing at the appropriate person.

"Yea, your the guys who dyed Grace's brother hair purple..." Celestina hissed sternly, they boys looked at their shoes, embarrassed grins on their faces. "nice to meet you" she grinned. "Nice job on his hair by the way!"

The three looked up and James, feeling relieved just smiled. They all sat down and started working.

"So where's the forth one... Remus wasn't it?" Celestina said after a few minutes of uncomfortable silence.

He was rather tired of trying to avoid talking about it, and Peter and Sirius showed no signs of even trying to help so he thought he might as well answer. "Uh he's er... um... yea there" Well that came out right...he looked over to his two companions which were nodding vigorously.

"oooooh K" Celestina said and rolled her eyes.

Sirius, James and Peter started to copy the moon charts down so they could always check them when Remus disappeared. They had left him with Gildroy Lockhart, a second year who never stopped talking... well neither did Sirius but Gildroy only talked about himself and himself and we mustn't forget himself. While Sirius talked about fun, sometimes annoying stuff.

"We're done... sooo I guess we'll be seeing you guys later..." Celestina said and smiled. Then she stood up and knocked all the books and the charts off the table.

"Woops! Oh no! I'm so sorry... trust me to do something like this..." She apologized her face a deeper shade of red than Lily's hair as they all helped to pick the books up.

"Well bye... again" She was still red. Lily just smiled and waved at James. He waved back and watched as the two girls left.

*

"Let's check the charts" James said to Sirius after Remus had vanished again.

"OK I'll go get them" Sirius said and ran up to their dorm.

"Here they are, now all we have to do is find today!" Sirius said brightly.

-half an hour later-

"I can't believe this! Peter! You copied two Aprils and no Mays!!!" Sirius yelled at a cowering Peter.

"I'm s-sorry... b-but all the p-papers got c-confused w-when Celestina k-knocked ev-everything o-over..." Peter stammered.

"How dare you blame your stupidness on the poor girl!!!" Sirius yelled

"W-why d-don't w-we j-just l-look out the w-window" stammered a terrified Peter.

Sirius and James looked at each other and then they raced for the window.

"Dang! It's too clouded! I can't see a thing!" Sirius said and was back to terrorizing Peter in a second. He picked Peter up on his shirt collar and started to shake him lightly, saying something like, "stupid, idiot" over and over again.

James walked calmly into their dorm and came back a short while later only to find Sirius still shaking Peter.

"Stop" he said and Sirius dropped Peter to the floor. Peter ran into their dorm and slammed the door shut.

"Idiot" Sirius mumbled.

"Let's just go look at the original charts at the library." James said and started to walk towards the portrait hole.

"But James! The library is closed!" Sirius whined.

James gave him a meaningful look and said: "so what"

"oooohhhhh" Sirius then said and hurried after James.

When they were out of the sight of the fat lady, James pulled out his invisibility cloak (He had gotten it from his father for Christmas) and threw it over the both of them.

They were almost there when...

"meeeeooowwww" It was Mrs. Norris. She was Filch's kitten... This kitten was always getting lost but in an odd way Filch could hear her and come rescue her if she meowed.

They froze. And sure enough...

"Ahhhh there you are my sweet, I've missed you... yes I have A boo boo boo you're soooo cute aren't you my sweet" Filch said after he had appeared out of a banner. Then he picked up his kitten and walked off.

"I didn't know there was a passage way there... I wonder where it leads..." James wondered out loud.

"We have the best black mail material in the world and you wonder about secret passages! Honestly James! What sort of Marauder are you anyway!" Sirius said mockingly.

"Lets just get to the library!" James said.

They spent almost fifteen minutes looking for the charts but Sirius finally found them misplaced in the invisibility section. James hurriedly looked for May and sure enough it was the full moon.
