Forever Falling (T/G)

September 1st, 1997 - 7:10 PM

What a boring evening. The Sorting was particularly long this time, with many new Hufflepuffs. About twelve new Gryffindors - one of them is extremely headstrong, as she originally refused to be lead to the common room, saying she'd find it by herself. It took both McGonagall and Dumbledore to convince her to follow the rest of the group...what a brat. It's only now I find out that it's Lee Jordan's younger sister. And because I'm the sixth year female prefect, she's under my care. Wonderful.

Dumbledore also announced that Moaning Myrtle's bathroom was now available for use, as they repaired it over the summer. I'm sure Myrtle wasn't happy with that.... actually, I'm off to check the bathroom now. I'll write more later.

I can't believe it. I went to check Myrtle's washroom, and as I opened the door, this little girl came flying out, holding a book. She was a Slytherin, but terrified nonetheless. Her face was quite pale, and she looked frightened. When I asked what was wrong, she just said that she didn't like Hogwarts and she wanted to go back home, where the bathrooms weren't scary. And when I asked her why it was scary, she thrust the book she was holding into my hands, and ran off towards the dungeons.

It wasn't until I examined the book that I understood why she might've been scared - I'm not sure how, but Tom Riddle's diary is back. It's the exact same one I held in my sweaty hands on my first day at Hogwarts, which means that Tom was still inside there, waiting for someone to control. I tried to throw it back into the washroom, and to flush it down the toilet, but I just couldn't let go. So now I have it again.

Oh God, what am I going to do?

I'm writing this in boring old History of Magic, with Professor Binns the ghost. Does he ever do anything other than talk in monotone? It wouldn't be too bad if he added some expression in his voice...honestly. But ever since I charmed my quill last year to take dictation from teachers in class, I never pay attention.

Which is good, considering the problem with the diary is still on my mind. What am I to do? Should I write in it? Should I go to Dumbledore or McGonagall? Or just keep it hidden somewhere? I need to think.

That's it. I've decided that I will write in Tom's diary. I know how he controls me, so I'll know how to stop him. It'll be easy. I hope. Actually, I think I'll start writing in it now. I'll write later to tell you how it went.

'Tom?' Ginny wrote, expecting the words to disappear like usual. Instead, words appeared underneath it.

'Yes, who is this?'

Ginny laughed inwardly. 'Oh Tom, why do your words stay on the page?'

'I'm not sure. Now then, who are you? I like knowing who I'm talking to.'

'Tom, it's me. You know, Ginny.'

'Ginny? As in 1st year, painfully shy yet bright Virginia Susan Weasley?'

'Well,' Ginny scribbled, 'I'm in my 6th year now, and I'm not shy anymore. But it is Virginia Susan Weasley.'

Nothing appeared for a couple of minutes, but then:

'Oh. Well, Ginny, how nice to see you again. Or, at least, hear from you.'

'I'm sure it is nice to hear from me, Tom.... how are you?'

'Very good, Ginny. You've learned the art of complimenting yourself. You definitely have changed.'

'I told you, Tom, that I'm no longer an ickle firstie. Did you expect to remain meek and mild forever?!'

'I didn't expect anything,' the invisible hand wrote, 'as I thought I had been destroyed.'

'Oh, I thought you were gone too. I went to visit Moaning Myrtle, however, and found the diary again...'

The hand now seemed scornful. 'You still visit Moaning Myrtle? Do you still think of her as your only friend too?'

'No, Tom. I send her your regards.' Ginny wrote furiously. This wasn't the real Tom. Suddenly, the diary started shaking a bit.

'Oh, Ginny, dear. I'm laughing right now. I just wanted to make sure it was really you.'

'And how did you do that?' Ginny scrawled. She was still annoyed, but not as much as before.

'By seeing if you were still sarcastic. One of your greatest gifts, you know. Other than your singing, of course.'

Ginny felt relieved. This was her Tom, who cared deeply about her, and remembered that she loved to sing.

'Thank you, Tom. I wish I could see you again.'

'Ginny, all you have to do is ask. Would you like to come right now?'

'I'm in History of Magic. Professor Binns won't notice.... but I have 45 minutes until Potions.'

'Good. Ginny, you know what to do.'

Before going in, Ginny passed a note to her friends, telling them that she was going into the diary. They looked a bit concerned, but they nodded anyway. Ginny brought the diary close to her face, and suddenly she felt the world tilt. Then she was falling...falling...falling...
