Author's Note:
This fic is in response to a seemingly innocent comment made by unsuspecting Arrmaitee. Something about Marietta and Cho and Squid simultaneously. I never thought of that! Way to go, thanks Arrmaitee! If I said that Crys inspired this one, I’ll have to sleep on the couch for a month. She’s too cute for that, so let’s just say she inspires me, not necessarily my work!

Wetter Dreams

It wasn't the creaking of the bedsprings that woke her. It wasn't the athletic body bending over her, inches from her face, testing her slumber. What woke Marietta was the excited rapidity of Cho's breath and the speed of her bare feet across the cold stone floor.

Marietta had been waiting for this. She had left her robes neatly hung over the chair by her bed so that she could throw them on a moment's notice. Perhaps her subconscious brain had been dreading its task; perhaps she did not want to wake up. Whatever kept her sleeping, it kept her from dressing properly for her late night excursion.

The sound of Cho's retreating footsteps was almost gone when Marietta finally gained the stairs. She hurried down, careful not to trip on her flowing nightdress, silently cursing her tired mind for not giving her more time.

Marietta stayed close to Cho all the way from the Ravenclaw Common Room to the Entrance Hall, but following so closely while crossing the grounds was impossible. Marietta slipped through the front doors as they swung closed and dived behind a bush flanking the steps of the castle. She crouched behind the bush, trying to catch her breath and watching Cho sprint towards the lake.

Cho was far too intent upon her goal to notice the world around her. She was running in her Tornadoes pajamas right through the center of the grounds. She was clearly visible from just about every window in the entire castle, thought Marietta with thinly veiled annoyance. She also seemed to be blind to obstacles in her path. She tripped several times over small bushes, rocks, and the Whomping Willow. Her negligence culminated in a nasty encounter with a large tuft of turf that sent her tumbling down a slope toward the shores of the lake.

The turf incident took Cho out of Marietta's line of sight, so she moved quietly from behind her bush and followed in Cho's tracks. Unfortunately for Marietta, Cho's tracks led her on a collision course with just about every natural obstacle on the Hogwarts grounds.

Dodging a few sleepy blows from the Willow, Marietta made it within a few feet of the slope leading to the lake when she saw Cho scratching around on the earth just a few feet away. Marietta's initial thought was a comparison of Cho to a squirrel searching for nuts on the forest floor. This thought made Marietta smile, and thus distracted her for a few more seconds, until, of course, she realized that it would be difficult to hide from Cho if she ran smack into her.

Thinking quickly, a term to be used very loosely when describing Marietta, she did the only logical thing that occurred to her. She took a great leap through the air, diving behind the near fatal tuft of grass. Smiling at her victory, head buried in her arms behind the turf, Marietta silent celebrated her victory.

Unfortunately, the tuft of grass was maybe a couple of inches off the ground.

"You know, just because you can't see me, doesn't mean I can't see you."

Marietta frowned and looked up. Her nose was about five inches from Cho's grinning face.

Following the long awkward pause that usually accompanies the discovery of one person stalking another person across the dark grounds of a magical school at midnight on a Tuesday, Cho asked Marietta, "Um... can I get you anything?"

Marietta responded by spitting out a mouth full of dirt and grass.

Cho raised an eyebrow and was about to laugh when she saw her friend's eyes go wide and mouth fly open in a silent scream. Marietta was gasping and clutching at her throat, and then slapping herself in the head behind her ears.

Cho was reminded forcibly of her kneazle Muffin kicking behind his ear when he had a flea or pixie attack. Cho amused herself with this image until she noticed that Marietta was slowly losing steam and her lips were turning blue.

"Marietta! You found my Gillyweed! I dropped it when I tripped..."

Cho's explanation was cut off by Marietta reaching up and grabbing her collar with a pleading, desperate look.

"Right! Sorry!"

Cho scooped up the rest of the Gillyweed that Marietta had spit onto the ground, stuffed it into her mouth and dragged Marietta of to the water while she chewed contentedly.

Marietta had taken quite a while becoming accustomed to her gills. She had wasted countless minutes trying to scrub them off in the lake water, but found they were pretty well stuck on. Then she had to get used to not be able to speak. Speaking for Marietta is rather like swimming for sharks.

Flailing and sobbing in seven feet of water, Marietta mourned the lost of her greatest skill. Cho, much more accustomed to the effects of Gillyweed, was gesturing madly and mouthing wordlessly.

Suddenly, from the depths of the dark water, two long, muscular tentacles shot towards the two girls. Silently Cho watched with unrestrained glee one tentacle snake its way around her waist, effortlessly flicking away her pajamas. The other tentacle shot around Marietta, gently holding her in place.

Marietta was frozen with horror as she watched Cho's pajamas drift away in soft current created by the Giant Squids movements. The tiny snitches zooming around the Tornadoes print seemed to be moving faster in an attempt to quicken their escape from the debauchery soon to begin.

As one tentacle held Marietta in place, another moved slowly towards the hem of her nightdress...

Fortunately, the other seventh year Ravenclaw girls left early for breakfast. Had they not, they would probably be sitting up against their headboards, smiling and snacking on dry cereal as they listened to Marietta thrashing about in her bed. Most of the noises she was making were incomprehensible moans and gasps, but every now and then a 'Squiddy! Oh Squiddy!' would escape her lips.

When Cho first woke she had been a bit jealous of Marietta's dream. The Giant Squid was, after all, hers. She had huffed and pouted and sent herself into quite a state, planning the harsh words she would direct at her friend later. That is until she gathered a few bits of phrases that made her realize she too was part of Marietta's dream. After a few anxious moments, Cho was somewhat disappointed to hear that her part in the dream was as rival only. Her name was mentioned most often as 'hogging the best tentacles'.

Much to Cho's disappointment, Marietta began to lose steam, and eventually, woke abruptly from her dream.

"Waah?!"

Her sheets were soaked with sweat. Cho figured Marietta had been thrashing around for at least a half-hour. Marietta sat bolt upright in bed, looking wildly around. When her eyes fell on the grinning, wide-awake Cho, they widened with horror.

Cho thought of many responses. Most involved the large stash of Gillyweed under her bed or half-hearted attempts to offer helping Marietta reenacting the dream. The response she settled on was far less intelligent or mature, two words that rarely describe Cho in the first place, and more, well, Cho-esque.

"Told you he was good didn't I?"
