Harry lay on his bed; it was three o'clock in the morning and the Weasleys were going to be there at twelve to pick him up.
'Finally', he thought, 'I've been waiting for months to go to the Burrow and now I can. It's a shame it's only for a day, I hate it here.' As he got lost in his own thoughts a small golf ball-sized owl came through the window.
"Pig?" Harry went over to it. "No, you're not Ron's owl...But then whose are you?" It was pink! 'How...?'
But before he could think much more about why this owl was pink, it dropped a letter into his hands.
'To: Mr. H. Potter
From: Wouldn't you like to know?'
That was all that was written on the envelope.
'This looks like Ron's writing...But more neat...' He ripped the top open (He hadn't seen the owl leave) and pulled out a short letter.
'Dear Harry, I know you don't know me, but please pay attention. The Dark Lord is near, very near. When the Weasleys come to get you, DONT LEAVE THEIR SIGHT! This is a matter of life and death, YOU MUST NOT LEAVE THEIR SIGHT UNTIL YOU'RE AT HOGWARTS! He's waiting until you're vulnerable, until you're out there, with no way to help yourself and no way to stop him from hurting you...From killing you. He won't stop until you're dead at his feet. PLEASE BE CAREFUL!
Love from...'
'Dobby again?' Harry wondered. 'No....No, Dobby can't write this well...but if it's not Dobby, then Ron maybe...no, he doesn't write this well either. It's close, but not quite his style...Hermione maybe...no, she writes much neater then this...But then who? I know it can't be Hagrid, he's off somewhere and won't be back until September, and he said there would be no post wherever he is...Mrs. Weasley maybe? No, she wouldn't do this kind of thing; she won't let me out of her sight once I'm at the Burrow anyway...Mr. Weasley? No, he wouldn't do this kind of thing either...Maybe...' Someone knocked on his door suddenly.
"Ron!" Harry said, as Ron walked into his room.
"We were late last time so we're early this time," Ron said, smiling.
"Great! I'll get my stuff!" Harry said, smiling back.
"Should you tell those Muggles that we're taking you?" Ron said, as Harry grabbed some blank parchment pieces and stuffed them into his trunk.
"No, they'll be glad I'm gone," Harry said, grinning.
"Ok." Ron said, grinning back, "I'll get Mina to help with the
trunk."
"Who...?" began Harry, but Ron called down the stairs before he could ask who Mina was.
"HEY MINA! COME AND HELP ME WITH HARRY'S TRUNK!"
"COMING!" a girl's voice called back. Harry could hear the 'thump, thump' of someone running up the stairs.
"Me an' Mina will get your trunk; you get any extras, 'kay?"
"Who's Mina?" but as soon as he said it his question was answered. Mina walked in. 'She's a veela!' was Harry's first thought.
Mina had long, curly black hair tied high atop her head, storm blue eyes that seemed to dance in the dim light of his room. She was dressed in short jeans and a shirt that was cut off at her belly button, showing a belly button ring.
As Harry's eyes scanned lower, he saw that she had a few words in a language he didn't recognise tattooed on her right ankle.
"Harry, this is Mina, my cousin." Ron said.
"Hi," Mina said, walking over and holding out her hand, "you must be Harry."
"Y...yeah," Harry said, shaking her hand.
"Ok then," Mina said, turning from him to Ron, "So, Ronniekins, where's his trunk?"
"I told you not to call me that!" Ron was red now.
"Did you?" Mina asked slyly,
"YES!"
"Okay, I won't call you that...for now." She winked then asked again, "Where's the trunk?"
"Over there," Ron pointed to Harry's trunk.
"Ok, I've got it."
Ron and Mina pulled the trunk downstairs, Harry following and holding all the stuff he could (he had put it all in his cauldron) as well as Hedwig's cage, she was off flying.
"Hi, Mr. Weasley," Harry said when they reached the living room. "Hi, Fred, George, Ginny." He dropped his cauldron and Hedwig's cage on the sofa as everyone said hello. "Floo powder again?" he added, his voice a bit shaky from the thought of floo powder.
"No, no, I've got two ministry cars for us; they're rather small though." Mr. Weasley said.
"Oh yeah, they're really small." Fred said, sarcastically.
"Yeah, there's only a space about the size of a bench for each of us," George said, rolling his eyes. Everyone but Mr. Weasley and Harry laughed.
"Very funny." Mr. Weasley said in a flat tone.
They all got into the two ministry cars, and Harry saw that Fred and George hadn't been exaggerating. There was a gap about the size of a small bench between each person and the next. Fred, George, Mr. Weasley and Ginny got into one car, while Ron, Harry and Mina got into the other.
Mina put headphones on as soon as they got in the car, and Ron turned to Harry.
"Wizards have headphone?" Harry asked.
"Yep, now we do. Run on magic, not batteries." Ron said. "So any news from Snuffles?" he asked.
Harry looked over Ron's shoulder, 'But what about her?' he mouthed silently.
"Eh? Oh, don't worry; she'll have those on at full blast until we get home." Ron said.
"Are you sure?" Harry watched her nervously.
"Yeah, she will, I know her too well." Ron smiled.
'He seems so happy', Harry thought. "Ok," he said, still staring at Mina.
"So, any news?" Ron pushed the subject.
"No, nothing but 'Be careful'." Harry frowned while he said this.
"Hmm...well, anything from Hermione?" Ron asked.
Harry hesitated then said, "Yeah, she still at Krum's."
Harry stared at Ron's face. His eyes seemed black. 'No, I must be going mental.' Harry thought.
"Oh." Ron looked down. He and Hermione had got into a fight because she went to stay with Krum for the summer. Ron told her flat out if she went out with Krum she wasn't his friend any more, and they hadn't spoken since.
"So, who is Mina again?" Harry asked, trying to pull Ron from this sudden silence (Mina was still singing to herself).
"She's my dad's sister's daughter," Ron said offhandedly.
"Oh. So, you know each other well?" As he spoke, Harry wondered why Ron had never said anything about her before.
"Yeah. When she was a year old her mum was killed by you-know-who and her dad disappeared, so she came to stay with us. We grew up together, but when we were ten my grandmother took her to America, and I haven't seen her until now..." Ron's eyes seemed normal again.
'What is wrong with my vision?!' Harry thought, rubbing his eyes. "Wow, that's a long time!" He replied. 'Sounds like what happened to me...'
"Yeah, but now that she's back she's going to stay with us and go to Hogwarts!" Ron's smile was the first thing Harry saw when he moved his hands from his face.
"Really?" Harry smiled too.
"Yeah. Hey! Maybe she'll beat Malfoy up!" Harry looked at her again.
"Her?"
"She may look weak, but she's got steel fists, trust me," Ron winced.
"If you say so," Harry said shrugging,
"Want to play a game of chess?" Ron asked.
"Yeah, but do you have your chessboard with you?"
"Of course!"
So they played chess all the way to the Burrow, and Ron beat Harry every time.
