- Author's Note:
- This prologue was originally written for an alternate story but I then decided to merge both those stories together and this one was born. The story begins with a loosely based version of “Sleeping Beauty”. It’s my all-time favourite Disney movie, and Aurora has always been my favourite princess.
PROLOGUE: Blessing of Midnight's Child
There's a grief that can't be spoken
There's a pain goes on and on
Empty chairs at empty tables
Now my friends are dead and gone
Les Miserables "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables"
Time is a metamorphosis of life and the passage of time begins from the old and new whilst stories told are started and ended. The world is a boat of sadness and happiness fails to come. Uncertainty and insecurity brings a new dimension to a personality. Jealously can end a relationship no matter how strong and serious. The strongest things and the strongest people will break and the weakest and the most fragile will succeed and overcome, and they will be the ones to rule. When you reach the forked road in life and unsure of which way to turn, you can place your decision carefully or you can blindly choose or you can remain to stay and refuse to move from your spot...
I chose the latter for many years because the past can be a cruel and vile thing. With all your effort you can put it behind then while you think things are finally all right and that you finally deserve your rewards for coping so well...Past comes along. He snatches all that you have worked for from you telling you that you do not deserve what you are receiving and reaping in. Whilst the story goes, the saying "it seems too good to be true" is one of the oldest and wisest sayings to this day but perhaps once in a blue moon, "too good to be true" is true...

Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy stood, hands clasped around the other's, admiring their baby son who lay on his back, chuckling in his crib.
The whole of the Malfoy Manor had erupted in a party for the birth of the Malfoys' baby son. Blue faeries danced around the room, crystal chandeliers hung from the high ceiling of the dining room, the expensive, mahogany, gold-rimmed table was pushed into a corner of the room, and the floor became a dance floor of social gatherings whilst the house-elves dodged in between the high and mighty witches and wizards, carrying trays of expensive wine. Four female witches stood in a group waiting for the time when they could bless the beautiful baby boy with a gift from their own heart. The gathering consisted of relatives or close friends of the Malfoys' who currently stood in chattering groups catching up on one another's gossips, waiting for the Blessing ceremony to begin.
The first of the Blessing witches finished her conversation, which was technically about her son's eleventh girlfriend that year, and walked towards the crib. The crib glowed with pale sunlight where the dust danced joyously and basked gleefully in the luminosity. Her dark, espresso brown hair fell in front of her face as she bent down to have her first glance at the child in the glowing crib. He was a pale, milky skinned baby with a few fair strands of white blonde hair. His eyes were large and curious, and the colour of glistening silver with a hint of ocean blue. The baby blinked and grinned, showing the first signs of a growing tooth as he did so. Inquisitive, he stared at the new face before him and grabbed a handful of the brown hair that was dangling.
The witch chuckled softly and gently pried the fascinated hands off her hair. The baby's smile faltered slightly yet his eyes remained as engrossed. The witch smiled kindly and spoke, "I bless thee with the gift of beauty." Tapping her wand on the baby's head, at which he glanced up and blinked in astonishment.
The second witch came forward and whispered whilst tapping the baby on the head tenderly, "I bless thee with the gift of intelligence." Once she had finished, she spun round as her golden honey-coloured cloak swished with her and went to join the rest of the crowd that was watching the Blessing.
The witch after her, Silhennie, who was the third out of the five Blessing witches, thought it seemed odd the last witch had not yet arrived, stood up from her chair and strolled towards the bright, sky blue crib incrusted with pale, periwinkle blue ribbons which stood in the middle of the room. The baby stared in awe at her wand and tried to snatch it. Whilst keeping it out of his reach, Silhennie murmured, "I bless thee with the gift of eternal wealth." Afterwards, she sauntered back to her seat, with her moss green dress robes studded with rhinestone diamonds trailing behind.
The fourth witch jumped, startled as her friend poked her, erupting her world of thoughts as he hissed under his breath that it was her turn. She thanked her friend whilst rubbing her shoulder and scowling at him because he'd underestimated his forcefulness. She made her way towards the empty centre of the room and walked into the shield that surrounded the crib, which blocked off everyone apart from the Blessing witches for the ceremony to be done in peace.
The witch smiled pityingly at the baby and said, "I bless thee with the gift of a choice between good and evil."
She stepped back from the crib and threw a glittering powder inside the shield and it glowed fuchsia for a second. The light faded, and the witch came out of the shield, which closed the instant she left. The witch walked back out to a chattering crowd of people who were in admiration of the display of her Blessing and in curiosity as the last witch of the Blessing had still not yet arrived.
Suddenly, the heavy, golden painted oak doors to the dining room flung open and the crowd turned round. The presence of Helendia, one of the greatest Seers of all time, brought a high feeling of anticipation to the gathering and made them draw their breaths in. They were anxious to see what the last witch would bless the Malfoy's child with, for it would surely be remarkable, though they could not hear what each of the Blessings were.
Helendia made her way through the mass of witches and wizards towards the blue crib surrounded by a shield - the colour of sunshine gold. She peeked her head into the crib and was greeted by a fair, chuckling face. Helendia couldn't help but tickle the child under the chin, and he giggled even more so. She smiled and passed her hand over the baby's face.
She spoke to the child, "I see Aretha has blessed you well with the gift of choice. It seems like she has some prophetic abilities. Why of course! Her grandmother was a marvellous Seer! Aretha knows you'll grow up to live a life being forced to fight for one side so she's given you the choice. I do hope you use it well, for your own sake, child. Choose the one that is deep down truly who you are, rather than what you have been taught to become. You have status, you have power and you have wealth - why Silhennie would bless you with wealth I wouldn't know. Perhaps, she thinks your wealth could falter. I guess I can understand why she blessed you with it; if you lost it whilst being brought up in a life like this, I presume it would be extremely hard to cope. You have a perilous and challenging path to follow; try and stick to who you are as an individual, " she whispered almost to herself.
Helendia placed her warm hands upon the baby's forehead, "I bless thee with the gift of love but the gift will be found on the path of hardship and pain. You will live a hard life but with happiness and rewards unknown to man if you succeed. You fall for the Unexpected, the ironic enemy but she will teach you truth, beauty, freedom and the greatest of all - love. As much as this seems like a curse, it will bless you with the most wondrous Blessing of all if you hold on, and I know you will. You have the power; all you need to do is just believe in yourself. Sleep sweet, child." She bent over and kissed the child on the head. His eyelids fell and once his eyes were shut, he'd fallen into a deep slumber and the shield disappeared to signify the end of the Blessing.
The congregation exploded into a noisy chattering and many rushed forward towards the crib to get their first glance at the Malfoys' son, delighting and squealing over the cuteness and adorability of the child. Others rushed forward to congratulate Helendia on the splendour of her work or to ask her if she would offer her Seer practices to them. Lucius placed a Silencing Charm on his son to block out the raucous babble of the group so he could sleep peacefully without being disturbed. Narcissa smiled gratefully at her husband for thinking of doing so.
Helendia removed herself from the hustle and bustle of the crowd and the interceptions of the witches and wizards, and walked up to the proud parents. "I am so terribly sorry but I have to depart. Someone is expecting me somewhere else and I'm already late."
"Oh no! I thank you for sparing time to bless our child," Narcissa said gratefully and gripped Helendia in an embrace.
Leaning close to Narcissa, Helendia whispered, "A word of warning: be watchful of my nephew for my brother issues harsh discipline."
Straightening herself, Helendia bid farewell to her brother and his wife and the 48-year-old woman strode out, her pale blonde hair, the trademark of a Malfoy, was twisted into a loose bun. The pale faded blue of her cloak just skimmed the floor and was fastened by an aquamarine stone whilst her silver diadem shone and glowed like a halo. She was unaware of the awed silence her presence emitted to the crowd and once the heavy oak doors had slammed shut, they yet again burst into a rowdy gibber.
Lucius and Narcissa, arms round the other, walked towards the crib and watched their peaceful baby son, Draco, sleep. The Blessing had been done and so the party celebrations proceeded...
