You May Be Right - A songfic to the Billy Joel song of the same name

Friday night I crashed your party
Saturday I said I'm sorry

Sunday came and trashed me out again

I was only having fun

Wasn't hurting anyone

And we all enjoyed the weekend for a change

Sirius Black looked at the girl who sat next to Lily Evans and he smiled fondly. His smile turned to a mischevious grin as he looked at his best friend, James Potter. "Well, Prongs, do you think the girls are still mad at us?" The two, along with their other two best friends, Peter "Wormtail" Pettigrew and Remus "Moony" Lupin, had made a surprise appearance at a slumber party the girls had that weekend, at Selene's house, because Lily's sister would have ruined everything if it had been there.

James grinned. "Nah, Padfoot. Lily's already talking to me again..." He blushed here, but didn't give any more details, for which Sirius was grateful. He really didn't care to know anymore about the snogging of his friends than necessary. Sirius returned his attention to Selene. He had apologized by owl on Saturday, but well, by Sunday she was annoyed with him again. He'd been a bit late for their date and then had proceeded to drink way too much butterbeer. But he did think she'd enjoyed it when he sang to her in the Three Broomsticks...

I've been stranded in the combat zone
I walked through Bedford Stuy alone

Even rode my motorcycle in the rain

And you told me not to drive

But I made it home alive

So you said that only proves that I'm insane

The war against Voldemort had been raging for a long time now. Sirius had been fighting with every resource he could. Professor Dumbledore and he had often sat and discussed the situation, and Sirius often felt better afterwards. The only other thing that really helped was his new motorcycle. He'd enchanted it to fly and he loved riding it, even in the rain. Saturday night, Selene had begged him not to drive home, but he did, with no adverse consequences. Her response to his "I told you I'd be fine" owl was simply three words. "You are insane."

You may be right
I may be crazy

But it just may be a lunatic you're looking for

Turn out the light

Don't try to save me

You may be wrong for all I know

But you may be right

He thought there was a strong possibility that she just might have something there. After all, Remus was always mumbling something about him needing medication. Actually, the only one who didn't seem to think he was crazy was James... And everyone thought he was crazy too... He shrugged it off. They weren't really crazy, they just thought a bit differently than everyone else...

Remember how I found you there
Alone in your electric chair

I told you dirty jokes until you smiled

You were lonely for a man

I said take me as I am

'Cause you might enjoy some madness for awhile

He thought back to how he'd met Selene. She'd been cornered by a bunch of Slytherins. They'd been tormenting her, until she was almost in tears. He scared them off, and then sat with her on the steps, telling jokes and stories to make her laugh. He'd noticed her before, ever since first year, but that was when they really started to get to know each other. It was funny, they'd been classmates for five years before that and had never really spoken beyond an occasional hello. It wasn't long until he realized that she was best friends with the very girl James had been mooning over. When he mentioned this, the two had started plotting to get James and Lily together. And of course, they'd succeeded. The whole school had known by third year that whenever Sirius Black set his mind to something, it happened, sooner or later. In this case, it was sooner.

But then things had changed. Selene had become upset when he wouldn't tell her what he did every full moon, when he simply vanished at night for no reason. Lily had accepted that James was gone then, but he wasn't sure how much Lily knew either. He just wasn't ready to tell Selene that he was an unregistered animagus, and he couldn't tell her about Remus' condition... Lily did know about that. Remus himself had told her, with somewhat more confidence than he'd told his own best friends all those years ago. Of course, that confidence was from the fact that his best friends were still his best friends when he told her.

He and Selene had stopped speaking. It hurt too much to be accused every time he turned around. At Lily and James' wedding, he was best man, she was maid of honor, and they never spoke a single word to each other. During the dance they'd had to share, he could have sworn he saw a tear hiding in her eye, but she blinked and looked away. When she turned her eyes back, it was gone. His own tears had long since dried up, but the ache was still there. He missed her terribly. And then, then there was Harry. His godson. James had never known how much it meant to him that they chose him to be such an important part of young Harry's life. He poured his entire heart into the boy, and into his friends. Then the darkness came closer. James and Lily had to be hidden from Voldemort. He debated with himself about being their secret keeper, but had thought Peter would be a more clever choice, never dreaming that Peter was the spy in their group. After it had been too late, he'd understood. He took his motorcycle to where his best friends lay, staying with the bodies until they were taken away. Hagrid took his motorcycle to take Harry to Dumbledore, and to Lily's sister. And he, he had gone after Peter..

Years later, after his escape from Azkaban, and the clearing of his name, helped considerably by the capture of Peter Pettigrew, complete with his silver hand given by Voldemort himself in a ceremony witnessed by Harry James Potter, he still used the name Wormtail as an insult. Most of the time, he was much like his old self, but he still dropped silent at certain moments, or turned away to blink back tears when Harry acted much like James would have done.

And now he stood outside her door. He'd tracked her down, with Dumbledore's help. He stood there and wondered what he would say when he saw her, or what he should do. It didn't really matter though, they'd wasted enough of their time. He knew she was still single, Remus had found out that much for him. He raised his hand to knock, just as she opened the door....

Now think of all the years you tried to
Find someone to satisfy you

I might be as crazy as you say

If I'm crazy then it's true

That it's all because of you

And you wouldn't want me any other way

You may be right

I may be crazy

But it just may be a lunatic you're looking for

It's too late to fight

It's too late to change me

You may be wrong for all I know

But you may be right

You may be right

I may be crazy

But it just may be a lunatic you're looking for

Turn out the light

Don't try to save me

You may be wrong for all I know

But you may be right

You may be wrong but you may be right

You may be wrong but you may be right
