Deja Vu

Story Summary:
Composed of a series of notes passed between the Marauders, Lily, Snape and Lucius Malfoy, this is my take on their seventh year. Written a while ago, it's not very true to characterisation, but I kind of like it anyway and hope you do too.

Chapter 3 - Defence Against the Dark Arts Class

Severus,

Are you ok? I saw what Sirius did to your quill last lesson. Just ignore him; he's only trying to annoy you. I don't think you should say anything about your feelings just yet, because he and Remus have only just got together and I don't want to see Remus hurt. I'll talk to you at lunch, when James is at Quidditch practice. It's very stupid that we have to be friends in secret - why can't we just tell everyone?

Lily.

Lily:

Because they'll get the wrong idea and think I'm taking advantage of you, or something. Also, they'll kill me. The Slytherin's don't exactly like you, either, so that's not going to be the best course of action. I know you don't want to hurt Lupin, but I really like Sirius. I hinted to him a moment ago, but he just said - and I quote - that I was: "repulsive, disgusting, and absolutely foul." Please talk to him, Lily. Just try and make him see some kind of sense. You don't have to hurt Lupin.

Severus.

Lily,

Ok, I'll try talking to him. That was horrible what he said to you. I think we should come out into the open about our friendship - maybe it'll make him 'see sense'. I'll talk to you later. Don't write back.

Lily.

Sirius,

Why did you have to go and set Snape's quill on fire? It wasn't funny; he could have been seriously hurt. It was a stupid trick to play. Are you and Remus going out soon? We should double date, you know: you and Remus, and James and me. What do you think?

Lily.

L - Yeah, that sounds good. We are going out Friday night, but it's a surprise, apparently, so I don't know what's going on. He wouldn't have been hurt, and why do you care, anyway? He should be used to our pranks by now. It's his own fault for giving me the evils.

- Sirius B.

Sirius,

It wasn't funny, it was mean. I don't care, particularly; only if he had been hurt you would have gotten into trouble. Hope your date goes well, though.

Lily.

Lily: Are you talking to him? I've thought about it now, and I agree that we should just put all the secrecy behind us and tell everyone that we're friends. If they can't accept it, then maybe they're not the people we thought they were. That is, except the Slytherins, of course.

Severus.

Severus,

Ok, great. I'm going to send a note around the whole class, do you want me to pass it to you first and you can write what you like on it?

Lily.

Lily: Alright. Pass it to me when you're done, then. I don't know if this is going to be such a good idea, but we don't exactly have much to lose, do we?

Severus.

Everyone,

This is Lily Evans writing, by the way. I just wanted to say that Severus Snape and I are friends. Just so you know.

Lily.

Everyone: This is Severus Snape. Lily's telling the truth; we are friends. We decided to tell you all because we were fed up with all the secrecy. Accept it.

Severus.

Lily,

I just got the note. You're friends with Snape? I'm not opposing your friendship, but I'm not going to start hanging out with him. Sorry.

- James.

L - Why the hell are you friends with that piece of crap? No offence, it's just I can't stand him. You be friends with him if you want, but don't expect me to hang with him. That's all I'm saying.

- Sirius B.

Lily,

That's fine with me. There's no way I'm going to oppose your friendship after everything you and the guys have done for me. Good for you.

Remus.

Lily,

Just one question: why? I don't understand; I thought you hated him as much as we did. You helped us pull off some of our greatest pranks against him. But whatever.

Peter.

S - Are you being friends with Lily to spite us, or get back at us in some way? Because if you are, you're lower than I thought. If you want to get back at us so badly, pull a prank of your own, instead of using Lily like you are. She deserves better than that.

- Sirius B.

PS. I've decided your hair looked better blue than pink, so I won't be trying the purple hair dye again in a hurry.

Black: My hair would look a lot better if you and Potter stopped dying it different colours every other week. For your information, Lily and I have been friends since first year and our friendship had absolutely nothing to do with you. However, as your ego is obviously so large, I am not surprised at the conclusions you instinctively drew, and just so you know two and two do not make five.

Severus.

S - My ego is tiny when compared to your ludicrously large nose. I know perfectly well that 2 and 2 make 4, not 5, and don't actually know what you're going on about. Fine, I'll accept that you and Lily are friends but if you ever hurt her I will personally hunt you down and kill you, as will several other people I'm sure. We don't dye it every other week; it's more like every month. Talk about not being able to count properly.

- Sirius B.

Black: I can count perfectly well, thank you very much. There is nothing whatsoever wrong with the size or shape of my nose. I wouldn't hurt Lily even if the only other choice were to die (not my hair, Black).

Severus.

S - Congratulations, it appears you've finally found your sense of humour. However, I don't think it would be a good idea to dye your hair black, since it's naturally that colour. I'm not even going to reply to that comment about your nose being, ahem, normal. I think we've established by now that we can both count, so let's drop it, eh?

- Sirius B.

Sirius,

Who are you writing to? I know you're not dong class work, so you must be writing to someone. It's not James because he's making moon-eyes at Lily, and it's not me, and it's not Peter because he's sitting next to me, so who is it? Sorry, I'm very bored.

Remus.

R - Hey, I'm writing to Snape of all people. He's going on about his bloody hair, and his nose, and whether or not we can both count (we've decided that the answer's yes, by the way). It's rather boring, really, but not more than this lesson. When's Moody coming back, do you know?

- Sirius B.

Sirius,

No, I don't know. Snape? You must be bored. This book is so old and out of date. It contradicts itself twice in the same paragraph on page 216, by the way. We really need new ones.

Remus.

R - If you don't like the book, take it up with Professor D, not me. I'd better do something; the bloody substitute teacher's checking around. I don't even remember his bloody name, for Merlin's sake!

- Sirius B.

Padfoot,

What are you doing at 5:00pm? There's a space on the Gryffindor Quidditch team, and they want you back. Basically, I'm saying be there, whether you've got something planned or not.

- Prongs.

J - I wasn't doing anything anyway, so I'll definitely be there. I'm back on the team? You mean it? Wow, thanks Jamie!

- Sirius B.

Padfoot,

Yeah, you're definitely on the team. I thought I told you not to call me that, by the way. I'm either James, or Prongs, never Jamie.

- Prongs.

J - Yes! You know you're one of my best mates, don't you, James? And don't you mean that you're James or Prongs, unless Lily's talking to you?

- Sirius B.

Padfoot,

No, Lily doesn't call me Jamie any more either. I'd better do something now, so... just giving you the news.

- Prongs.

James,

I have something to confess: Severus fancies Sirius. Should we tell him?

Lily.

Lily,

He'll go crazy, so we probably shouldn't. That explains a lot, though. Don't worry about it. Oh, I forgot it's a short lesson; the bell's just gone.

- James.

James,

I don't remember them saying anything about it. Why? Ok, then, I won't mention it again.

Lily.

Lily,

It's the last lesson before the Christmas holidays, remember? You were too involved with finishing your Transfiguration essay to listen. Didn't you realize it was the last day of term, though?

- James.

James,

Can you really blame me? It was eighteen sheets of parchment long! Oh, yes, I remember. Petunia's going to love the fact that there'll be two more 'freaks' in the house for Christmas. Are you sure you don't want to come, too? She'd simply adore that!

Lily.

Lily,

No, I'm going home for Christmas. Hey, while you're home, try to set Peter up with your sister. Just to see her reaction, you understand. Ask Remus if he wants to go; he's staying, and he'll be alone if both Peter and Sirius go with you.

- James.

James,

I asked him, but he said something about maybe visiting a relative in Wales, or something. Does he even have any relatives in Wales? And why would he visit them, and not his parents?

Lily.

Lily,

He has a rough time with his parents. Don't worry about it; I'm not sure he'd want me to tell you. I'll ask him if I can, though. Sorry. Ok, we have to go. Love you.

- James.

James,

I don't get it, but please ask him. Love you, too.

Lily.
