Power's Nice, but Only When You Have It

Chapter 1-Heading Out

Sleeping through the evening

Singing dreams inside my head

I'm heading out

I've got some ins who say they care

And they just might

I'll run away with you if things don't go as planned

Planning big could be a gamble

I've already rolled the dice

-Eve6 Promise

"All aboard!" the conductor yelled as all the kids finished saying goodbye to their parents.

I snapped out of my reverie abandoning the bench I had been sitting on to make a run for the Hogwarts Express. As I did so I noticed a lot of people staring at me. Maybe it was because I was wearing a red, floaty chiffon top and my Buffalo jeans that just cling to my curves. Maybe it was my waist length brown hair with red and blond highlights, and honey eyes. I'm about five foot, one inch and am of average weight, though I have wide hips. However, they were probably staring because I'm fifteen and they've never seen me before. I could tell that was is the sort of school where everyone knows most everyone, the ones in their year at least.

Once on the train, I went past all the compartments filled with chatting kids who had probably known each other since they were in diapers, or whenever they started coming to this school, to the empty compartment at the end. I opened it and sat down on the seat facing forward, settling into the soft, red cushions.

"Au revoir," I whispered, looking out the window as the train pulled out of the station - saying goodbye to my old life, but not really saying hello to my new one; I would do that when I was ready. I took out my CD player and Robert Jordan's Crossroads of Twilight, the tenth book in the Wheel of Time Series. I just couldn't wait to find out what happens when Elayne sees Rand next, and what will happen with Mat and the Daughter of the Two Moons!

I had only been reading my book and listening to my CD, for about ten minutes when the door to the compartment opened admitting a tall, slender boy. He was around my age with approximately chin length, pale blond hair and the most captivating blue eyes I had ever seen.

"Oh, I'm sorry," the boy said surprised. "I didn't know that anyone else was in here, I'll leave if you want me to," he said apologetically, as he started backing out of the compartment.

"No, stay," I said, "when I'm not talking, which I tend to do rather loudly- at least when I get excited about something, I'm usually very quiet because I'm either staring out the window, spaced out, or reading. One of which I was doing before you came, so that might be why you didn't realize I was here."

"Well, you don't seem to be talking all that loud right now. That would mean that you're not very excited about my appearance in your compartment," he said rather glumly, but with a smile so I knew that he was joking.

"Yeah well, that's because you're not Emily. So I don't have to yell to get my point across," I said sarcastically with a bit of a smirk on my face.

"I'm not Emily, whoever she is, so you don't have to worry about me not listening to you. Though how anyone could ignore such a lovely lady as you I do not know. I, however, am Draco Malfoy."

"Draco. Dragon. I like it. Emily's my best friend. My initials, ARS, mean art in Latin, but dragon is pretty cool too. We'll have to see if your name fits you as well as mine fits me. By the way, my name is Audrey, but people call me Rachel."

"We'll just have to see about all that Latin, but does a last name go with that Audrey and Rachel?" he asked, with a glint in his eye.

"Satowsky," I answered deciding in that moment that I was no longer Audrey Rachel Sutton, but Audrey Rachel Satowsky, my original last name. Though, if I really wanted, I could have had my first name be Beth or Emily, but I wanted to stay true to myself, to whom I really was.

"Hmm, Satowsky, that name sounds familiar; though I admit I don't remember seeing you around Hogwarts last year. I guess I'll just have to ask my father."

"Well that's probably because I've never been to Hogwarts before. Would you mind filling me in on what life is like at Hogwarts? I have four years of catching up to do, including my own training."

"You're new? I just assumed that I hadn't noticed you before. But what do you mean that you have four years of catching up to do? Didn't you transfer from Durmstrang or Beauxbatons?"

"No. First off, I'm American. Couldn't you tell by the accent, or lack of one seeing as how I'm from Westchester? And second off, my powers didn't exactly show themselves until this summer. Then I got this letter saying that I was to report here today. Of course, getting to England was a bit of a hassle, but they paid for the flight so it was good. I just love first class don't you?" I said, with a wink

"Never flown. My dad hates Muggles. I've never been to the states either. I wish I could go, but my dad despises American wizards as well. He hates so many people; I never get to do what I want to do. All of his prejudices really take a toll on my life. I get along with him though, at least for my mother's sake."

"She doesn't like to see you guys fight?"

"Something like that..." he said trailing off. I knew that there was more, but I didn't want to try my luck. I didn't really know the kid that well, and though he was hot I didn't know what his temperament was. Thus no prying, at least not yet. This might just turn out to be fun after all.

"So, do you still have to use a wand, or do you not need one?"

"What?" he asked surprised, coming out of his own little reverie. He was probably thinking about what he didn't tell me, but there'll be time enough for that later.

"You know. Do you have to use a wand, or can you perform spells without them? Since my powers developed so late I have some extra powers, and I'm a lot more powerful than I would have been if they had developed earlier, something about reserves of magic. I don't have to use a wand."

"So you're a magid then?" he asked his eyes lighting up. "Me too, do you know how to control your powers yet? No, of course you don't, otherwise you wouldn't be on this train."

I laughed, "no, I wouldn't. I really would have much rather discovered that I was the most powerful Aes Sedai since the Breaking. But no, instead I'm just a lowly witch far behind her classmates while being more advanced than most of them in the respect that I'm a magid, was it?"

"Yeah, the term for a wizard, or a witch in your case, who can perform magic without the assistance of a wand is magid. What are Aes Sedai though, if I might ask, and what was the 'Breaking'?"

"Aes Sedai are these people from this series that I read. They can channel the One Power, which is like being a witch, but it's a bit different seeing as how it's an element of a book made up by a man. The Breaking is an event that happened in these books long ago when they imprisoned the Dark One, all the men who could channel went insane, and as a result of that destroyed the world. That time is now called the 'Breaking' in the books," I said very quickly as I knew a great deal about these books, and liked them quite a lot.

"Who's the Dark One? Are you talking about Voldemort?"

"The Dark One is like the super-villain in these books. He's sort of like the devil, except he is beginning to have a very real grip on the world later on in the series. I can lend you the first book in the series if you want. And what's Voldemort? That means 'flight of death', what does that have to do with anything?"

"Yeah, that'd be great, but you don't know who Voldemort is?"

"Ok, I'll find it for you in sec. But Voldemort is a person? Oy! Who would want to name themselves that unless they were like immortal or something like that? However, I obviously don't know who they are seeing as how I am asking whom the fuck they are. I mean they're definitely a fucked up person, as you can tell by their name, but please, enlighten me as to whom they are and what impact they are to have in my life."

"Uh...okay then. Voldemort is an evil Dark Wizard who is trying to control the world by killing all Muggles, and Muggle-born witches and wizards. He is very powerful and rules through fear. He has a band if minions called Death Eaters, and sadly Voldemort has a direct influence on my life. He pretty much controls my fate due to my father, and I really wish he didn't. However, I am always trying to find ways out of it, and having a powerful witch by my side instead of that sniveling, little pug-faced coward Pansy Parkinson."

"Okay then. I'm guessing he's like Public Enemy number one or something like that. As in a very big threat to the Wizarding Community, and if you see him try to kill him?"

"Well actually, no. It would be more like if you see him go run and hide, or find that stupid prick Harry Potter."

"I'm not going to ask who Harry Potter is, I'll leave that for later, or maybe I'll just see who he is for myself. And let me look for that book for you," I said, as I started to go through my bag. "Who is Pansy Parkinson though? You seemed to speak about her with a certain amount of disdain," I commented as I was rummaging through my bag.

"Uh... she's um uh... well my father wants me to marry her, but I hate her because she's stupid, ugly, annoying, and completely shallow."

"Sounds like a great girl. I'm sure you'll make wonderful kids, at least if your genes are superior over hers. Meaning if the genes for that gorgeous blond hair, and high cheekbones are dominant over her genes for her physical traits," I said, while throwing the third book in the series out of my bag along with my favorite book Magic Can be Murder by Vivian Van Velde. "Found it!" I yelled, holding up my battered copy of The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan, pleased with myself immensely.

"Don't you think that book's a bit big?" Draco asked skeptically

"Not particularly. I mean the other books, including the ninth took me very little time, well other than the first one which took me a month, but that was only because I read like twenty other books in that month. I mean the ninth book is like the thickest one, and it only took me a little over a week to read it. Of course, I also had a paper due that week, it was eleven pages on Egyptian religion, and the requirement was only three," I said proudly, "but then again, I am a pretty fast reader. It might take you more time to read these books than it took me. It really just depends on how fast a reader you are, and how into the book you get. It's good though, so it's definitely worth reading, though it might get tiresome at times. It's a long book, and lots of things go on at once. It might get tedious. I suggest you start reading before we get to Hogwarts so that you can decide whether you like it or not."

"Seeing as how big that book is mind giving me a summary?"

"Well...the book doesn't really have a summary on the back, only this little quote thing from the series. It somewhat explains the book, but not really. First I'll read you the little quote, and then I'll try to summarize without telling the entire story which I tend to do when I get into summaries."

"Sounds like you have problems relating to other people, at least ones that don't know where you're coming from. It's okay. I'll just read the part on the back and then I'll just start reading. If I hate it I can just give it back to you, no biggie."

"Only sometimes," I said blushing, "I recommend that you read the glossary first, because the book has all these creatures and concepts. It's like really involved Fantasy. I mean not like this isn't straight out of a Fantasy book, but it's a different kind of magic and such; more of your own abilities and self-discovery, than spells and teachings. In the book, if you possess the One Power you must learn to control and use it. It's weaves and elements, not spells. You really need to read the glossary to have any idea of what I am saying though."

"Yeah, I guess I would. 'The Wheel of Time turns and Ages come and go. What was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the Shadow.' Sounds nice. So I'm guessing these stories are somewhat in the past, but a parallel dimension of some sort?"

"Something like that. I just think that you don't really get Fantasy and Sci-Fi writing. It's okay though. You just have to like it!" I said cheerfully

"I'm gonna start reading then," Draco said picking up the book and settling into the cushions. I decided to do the same and resumed my CD and went back to reading my book. I ended up just staring out the window however, as the landscape went by and I eventually fell into a light sleep.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

A while later, I didn't know how long, but my CD player was off, I woke with a start. Draco's face was looming in front of mine, and his breath was warm on my skin.

"'Bout time you got up. I've been thinking of ways to get you up for at least ten minutes. We're almost at Hogwarts. I suggest that you change into your robes. I've already changed into mine."

"Really? Ten minutes? How sweet!" Draco blushed at that. "You already changed? Darn! I was looking forward to that! Oh well," I said with a sigh. "But which robes do I change into? They had me buy all sorts of clothing! Plain black robes, fancy ones, dresses, just plain normal clothing! What the hell am I supposed to wear!" I exclaimed in distress.

"You wear the plain black ones, at least until you have a house and are given your uniform," Draco said calmly, amazingly unfazed by my spazing.

"Uniforms? We have uniforms? Oh, shit! I don't get to wear my own clothes? What the fuck is wrong with this school?! I mean I know it's like a 'private facility', but really, uniforms!" I exclaimed even more distressed. I tended to like all my t-shirts, especially the stuff I remade to my own designs.

"Why? What would you rather wear?"

"Well what I'm wearing right now for one! I like this top," I said dejectedly. "I think it looks very pretty on me, especially with my jeans," I pouted.

"Well you're right about that. You're certainly very sexy in those clothes, and I'm sure nobody will mind if you wear them, at least not the guys. Some of the girls might get jealous though," he teased.

"Why Draco, are you flirting with me?" I said as I smirked.

"So what if I am? Would you hate me?"

"No, actually. I'm very flattered, especially that such a hot guy as you likes me!" I said, as I smiled very big.

"Really, I'm hot? I never would have guessed. That explains a lot. I thought that over half the female population of the school- as well as some boys, were obsessed with me over my charm, money and presence. That's a bit of a blow. I guess it was the sex appeal after all!" he said with a wink.

"You're very much stuck on yourself, aren't you? I should've known by the way you carried yourself, and talked to me. But then again some of the hottest guys I know are absolutely oblivious to the fact that they're attractive. It could also be that they're geeks, and only I really find them attractive. I mean I am a geek at heart, maybe I tend to like guys for the books they read instead of how they look, though they d have to be rather acceptable."

"Oh? So what would that make me, acceptable or non? And who are these guys in the first place?" he asked suspiciously.

"They're just a bunch of guys that I tend to date. Mostly at camp though, it's pretty slim pickings back home. They're such sweeties though! And you? You would be more than acceptable."

"Ah, so then you're free to date? You're not attached to one of these 'geeks' right now are you?"

"Depends on who wants to date me, but no, I'm not dating one of my little geeks at the moment," I responded to Draco as he moved closer to me.

"And what if, say I wanted to date you? What would you say then?"

"Well if over half the girls in Hogwarts, as well as some of the guys are after you, that would make me ahead of the game wouldn't it? I guess I'll just have to date you then. But just exactly what are you asking me?"

"This," Draco said as he leaned in towards me and kissed me full on the lips. His lips were warm and soft against mine. They were a little chapped, but it was nice. His hands were wrapped around my waist and slowly going upwards. After what seemed like and eternity, or when Draco realized he couldn't unhook my bra, we parted.

"And what was it that you asked me exactly?" I questioned teasingly, but uncertain as to what he would say.

"Well what did you think I was asking?" he teased back.

"Well I couldn't really tell, what with the kissing and all there wasn't much talking, but what I got was if I wanted to sleep with you."

"It'd be very nice if you would, but that's not what I was asking," he said with a mischievous grin.

"Then what were you asking?" I said as I sat down across from Draco.

"I was asking whether or not you would go out with me," he said as he sat down across from me, "So, what do you say?" Draco asked somewhat uncertainly.

"Does this answer your question?" I asked as I leaned forward and kissed him.

"Mmm...very well," Draco said as he leaned into the kiss. All of a sudden the train came to an abrupt stop and I fell forward onto Draco in the middle of our kiss.

"Now Audrey, if you really want to sleep with me you've got to be a bit more subtle than that!" Draco said with a laugh as he picked me up onto his lap.

"Why must I be subtle when I already have you?" I asked kissing him more.

"Because if you're not careful, that twit Pansy Parkinson might just decide to kill you. Like I said, my father wants us to get married, and thus she considers me her sole property even though I absolutely detest her and have told her so on many an occasion. Either that or she might blackmail you so that you have no social standing or something like that."

"Now why would I have to worry about social standing and having friends here when I already have you? So what would she have to blackmail me on? I am extremely powerful, and my worst secrets are that I am a true geek and in that respect am an avid Fantasy/Sci-Fi book reader. I am into dark stuff, and would relish a vampire biting into my neck. Of course I wouldn't want to become a vampire however, even if blood does taste really good- it's all salty and warm. But still, I couldn't have kids if I were to be one, which is why a werewolf is the best way to go. I mean, what could be better than turning into this glorious animal every month and running free through forests taking pleasure in the hunt? As long as I don't kill any people that is."

"Okay...I think that's enough info. You really know a lot of this stuff don't you?" Draco said, I could tell that he was a bit freaked.

"Only what I read, but I tend to do a lot of reading on such subjects."

"I highly doubt you'll come into contact with a vampire at Hogwarts, however. A werewolf maybe, especially after we had one as a teacher in our third year. But as such, you'll just have to do with be nibbling on your neck," Draco said as he started to do exactly what he said he'd on, nibble on my neck instead of a vampire.

"Are you trying to give me a hickey, because I'm sure that that would make a great first impression on everyone else. 'Hasn't even been here a day and is already fucking the hottest guy at school.' Yeah I'm sure that would do wonders for me," I said sarcastically.

"I thought you didn't care what everyone else thought of you."

"I don't, not really, but I'd be nice to have some friends in this place seeing as how the only person I know is you."

"You know if you don't want people to see the hickey I could always bite you somewhere else," Draco said suggestively.

"I'd be delighted for that to happen, however don't we need to get off the train and up to the school?" I asked as I jumped off his lap and picked up my bag. "What do we do with our trunks? How do we get them up to the castle?"

"The house-elves will take care of that. Just take what you want on your person, and lets go grab a carriage."

"House-elves? What the hell are those? Sound like little demonic beings. I mean I know what elves are, but most elves hate indoors. They live and commune with nature. Any elf that would willing live inside must be some kind of mutant."

"You're right, in a way at least. I don't know like the whole history and background of house-elves, but they are sorta creepy looking. They are somewhat like maids though. They take care of families and houses, or in this case castles. Each elf has a place to take care of, and can only be set free if their master gives them clothing. The house-elves at Hogwarts mostly work in the kitchen, but they take care of the castle as well. They clean the common rooms and such."

"Do you know if they make our beds or do laundry?"

Draco laughed, "why yes, they do in fact do the laundry, though I believe it's up to you to make your bed, but they do change your sheets for you."

"Ooh yay! I'm hopeless at changing my sheets, and I don't even know how to do laundry."

"That's my girl! You'll fit in well with my family."

"Fit in well with your family? What exactly is implied there Mister Malfoy? Are you suggesting something?"

"Why yes I am. My father will want to meet any girl that I am dating, and my mother would just be delighted. She hates Pansy too," Draco said with a wink.

"And how would I fit in? It's not like I have anything in common with them."

"Oh how wrong you are. My mother has never even lifted a finger that she hasn't wanted to since she married my father. She has no more idea of how to put sheets on a bed than you do."

"Well of course I don't, I grew up in Scarsdale! I had a cleaning woman who does the laundry and cleans my room for me. We're very posh there, couldn't have it any other way!" I said in a mocking voice for I detest most of the stuck up little bitches that I went to school with.

"So are we going to Hogwarts or not?" I said as I stepped up to one of the carriages in a line near the train.

"Why of course we are," Draco said as he lifted me into the carriage. I could get used to this...

Author notes: Thank you all for reading! Please reveiw! I would love to know what you all think of it because this is my first fic! Chapter 2 is partly written (I left out some details, does anyone know the sorting hat song?) It'll take about a month to type up, maybe longer depending on school work.
Next chapter: We arrive at Hogwarts, my presence is explained to a curious school, Harry and Hermione are revealed as meddlesome and I am sorted in to a house! Can't tell you which one though ;)
