Somewhere Out There

Rachel Adams

Story Summary:
This is a song-fic to the Our Lady Peace song called "Somewhere Out There." This was written after Order of the Phoenix. Harry and Hermione are finally together when he has to leave and hunt down Voldemort. This is a one-shot. I've hung onto it for so long because I feel as though my heart and soul are poured into this story, I was in tears by the end of writing it. But now I feel it's time to share it with others!

Last time I talked to you,

You were lonely and out of place.

You were looking down on me,

Lost out in space.

We laid underneath the stars,

Strung out and feeling brave,

I watched the red orange glow.

I watched you float away.

Hermione laid down on the grass in her backyard. The sun was fading slowly onto the horizon and Hermione looked at the picture frame she had brought outside with her. She looked down at the smiling face of the one she loved. Hermione touched the glass, tears forming in her eyes. She closed her eyes and the tears spilled over and flowed down her cheeks. Hermione forced back a sob and opened her eyes. "Please, God, please keep him safe. Send him back to me soon."

Hermione thought back seven months to the last time she had seen Harry. They had been lying in this very yard, staring up at the sky. They had moved into this house together shortly after leaving Hogwarts. They had been together two years and couldn't be happier. Until that fateful night. Harry leaned over Hermione as she lay on the ground and she smiled up at him. He did not offer a smile in return; his expression was more serious than she had ever seen it. Hermione's smile quickly faded and she reached up to touch his face. "Harry, what's wrong?"

Harry paused for a long moment and his voice sounded shaky when he spoke. "Hermione, I have to leave tomorrow. I've been given notice, and... and the time has come. I am going to go in search of Voldemort. It's time for me to fulfill the prophecy."

Hermione's face quickly paled and she seemed unable to speak. Finally she found her voice. "Harry, no, please don't go. You can't leave me like this. I can't take a chance on losing you, I can't. Please, oh God, don't do it, I'm begging you!"

Hermione was starting to cry and Harry could see she was on the verge of being hysterical. He rubbed her arm soothingly. "Hermione, the wizarding world depends on this, depends on me. I have to do this, but don't you worry, I'll be back. I love you too much, Hermione, I'm not prepared to leave you, okay? You have to have faith in me, because if you don't, I might not survive this."

Hermione was shaking with silent sobs and she nodded, shutting her eyes. Harry gently wiped her tears away and they laid together outside for the longest time. He gently held her and whispered soothing words to her. After a while, she managed to calm down some. Finally, Harry stood up and gently pulled Hermione to her feet.

They walked inside and Harry began packing a bag of various articles of clothing and other items. Hermione sank onto the edge of the bed, watching him move about the room. She could see how tense and stressed he was. Harry couldn't stop moving around and had to keep busy when he was stressed out, and Hermione just wanted to be alone and quiet. She watched him pack up, saying nothing.

After a while, Harry sat the bag on the ground near the door and turned to Hermione. She looked up at him with puffy, red eyes and said softly, "How long will you be gone?"

Harry shrugged. "I do not know. Months, maybe even a year or more. I just don't know, Hermione."

Hermione looked down at her hands. Her voice was trembling. "Will we be able to keep in contact?"

He shook his head sadly. "It's not going to be a possibility. The letters could be intercepted, you know the risks."

She swallowed back the lump in her throat and nodded. Harry stood there for a minute before he said, "Let's get changed and go to bed, I have to leave early tomorrow. I just wanna spend the night holding you."

Hermione took in a deep breath and stood up, moving towards the wardrobe to get her nightclothes. She changed quickly and then walked back over to the bed, sitting down on the edge again. Harry slid under the sheets and said, "Come on, babe, try to sleep."

Hermione climbed under the covers and turned on her side, facing away from Harry. He turned to lie on his side and slid his arm over her body protectively. Harry grasped her hand, intertwining his fingers with Hermione's. She could feel his warm breath on the back of her neck and she sighed. Hermione couldn't help but think: This may be the last time we lie in this bed together. Tomorrow could be the last day I see him alive. She tried to force those thoughts from her mind but found herself lying awake all night, listening to the sound of his even breaths as he slept.

Morning came all too soon and the alarm buzzed angrily on the nightstand. Harry quickly turned it off and slid out of bed. "Time to get up, Hermione."

Hermione climbed out of bed slowly and changed into her clothes for the day. She had lain awake the whole night. Hermione walked over to the mirror and studied her reflection. She pulled her hair up into a ponytail and waited while Harry got ready. He glanced at the clock. "They'll be here to get me in twenty minutes. We'll have to say goodbye here at the house."

Hermione gave him a stricken look. "I thought I'd accompany you to the train station!"

He just gazed at her sadly and Hermione exited the room quickly, feeling a sob rising up in her throat. She put her hand over her mouth as she hurried down the hallway towards the stairs. Hermione made it halfway down the stairs before she collapsed, crying uncontrollably. She kept shaking her head, saying to herself, "This isn't real, this is a dream, a nightmare, I'm going to wake up and spend another wonderful day with Harry."

Hermione jumped as Harry sat down on the step next to her. He reached for her hand and firmly grasped it. He raised her hand to his lips and gently kissed it. She looked at him, the tears still flowing in a river down her crimson cheeks. "Please, please don't cry, Hermione. I am coming back to you; this is just a temporary separation. Please stop crying, I can't bear it."

Hermione managed to stifle her tears some, but they were still pooling in her chocolate brown eyes. Harry led her down the steps and sat his bag by the front door. A car pulled up in the driveway a few minutes later, honking it's horn twice. Hermione could feel panic welling up in her again and Harry turned to her. "Hermione, please pray for me, every night, without fail, and know that I will be thinking of you every second, of every minute, of every hour, of every day."

Hermione nodded and Harry took her face in his hands. He leaned in to give her a long, lingering kiss. Hermione tried to memorize every detail of it, not knowing when she would be able to kiss him again. When Harry stepped back, Hermione gripped his hands tight, never wanting to let go. He looked deep into her eyes for a minute. "I love you, Hermione."

She managed to choke out, "I love you too, Harry. Be safe in your journey, Harry, please be safe."

With those final words, he turned around and walked out the door. He strode to the waiting car and opened the door. He turned back to look at her one last time before disappearing inside. Hermione watched the car drive down the street before shutting the door. She leaned back against it and slowly slid down to the ground, her face in her hands, tears overtaking her once again.

Down here in the atmosphere,

Garbage and city lights.

You've gone to save your tired soul,

You've gone to save our lives.

I turned on the radio,

To find you on satellite.

I'm waiting for the sky to fall,

I'm waiting for a sign.

Hermione's thoughts were broken by a bird screeching loudly. It was completely dark now and she stood up to go back inside the house. She replaced the picture on the mantle and turned on the radio to the WWN. Hermione sat down on the sofa, waiting to hear if there would be any news about Harry or Voldemort.

An hour passed and the news was over. There was no mention of Voldemort except to say that no one knew where he was hiding. That meant Harry hadn't found him yet. Hermione sighed, feeling relieved that Harry had not yet had to face Voldemort, but upset he couldn't come back to her yet. Hermione turned off the radio and decided to head up to her bedroom. She flicked on the lights and realized the room had not changed much in the seven months Harry had been gone. The little things Harry had not put away were still where he had left them last. She changed into her nightclothes and went in the bathroom to wash her face.

And all we are,

Is all so far.

You're falling back to me,

The star that I can't see.

I know you're out there,

Somewhere out there.

You're falling out of reach,

Defying gravity, yeah.

I know you're out there,

Somewhere out there.

When Hermione reentered the room she moved to stand at the foot of the bed. She sank to her knees and slowly brought her hands up in front of her, clasping them together tightly. "Please, God, keep Harry safe, let his journey be quick and successful. Let him return to me soon, I am begging you."

She kneeled in silence for a few minutes before climbing into bed and going to sleep. Hermione had not had a proper night's sleep since Harry left. She was always plagued by dreams of what was happening to Harry, which caused her to toss and turn all night. But she knew she couldn't stop life, so she went through the motions, and tried to carry on like normal. She knew that was what Harry would want her to do.

Hope you remember me,

When you're homesick,

And need a change.

I miss your purple hair,

I miss the way you taste.

I know you'll come back someday,

On a bed of nails I wait.

I'm praying that you don't burn out,

Or fade away.

The alarm buzzed angrily as always the next morning and Hermione reached to turn it off. She rose out of bed and headed straight downstairs without bothering to change. She began to make a pot of coffee when she heard a tapping at the window. Hermione looked up with a smile at the owl waiting for her to let it in. Hermione opened the window up and took the letters from the owl. She gave it water and sent the owl on its way. She flipped through the various letters and paused at an official-looking envelope. Hermione's hands trembled as a feeling of trepidation spread throughout her.

Hermione moved to the bare table and gently sat down, staring at the envelope. It was from the Ministry of Magic. She was terrified of what she would find inside. She shut her eyes and took in several deep breaths before opening it up. Hermione pulled out the letter and unfolded it:

Ms. Hermione Granger,

Two nights ago, Harry faced Voldemort. They dueled, and the prophecy was fulfilled. Voldemort is now dead. But due to extensive injuries, Harry also perished. We wanted to inform you before we inform the media and offer our sympathies. We are truly sorry for your loss.

Hermione stared at the letter in shock. This is some kind of sick joke, it has to be, this isn't possible. He loves me; he's coming back to me.

She looked up as another owl tapped at her window. She numbly walked over to it and took the letter. Hermione ripped it open and an icy knot formed in her stomach:

Hermione,

I am on my way to your home. I am bringing Harry's body to be buried. I will be there in three days.

-Albus

Hermione crumpled the letter as her hand closed into a fist. She tried to control her shaking body but found it impossible. She felt completely helpless and out of control. Hermione dashed into the living room to grab the picture off the mantle. Harry was smiling and waving at her, like always. This isn't possible, it can't be. But Hermione could feel it deep down in her soul. Harry was gone. Life as she knew it would never be the same again.

Hermione opened her eyes and began walking purposefully outside into the backyard. She stopped in the middle of the yard, taking in the surroundings for a moment, still clutching the picture. The memories flooded over her, her and Harry moving into this house, working towards their careers, talking of getting married and having a family one day. All of the possibilities were gone now. He was in God's hands now.

Hermione fell to her knees and looked to the sky. The tears flowed down her cheeks as pink tinged the morning sky. The wind blew gently, lifting her hair and caressing her face. Hermione managed a smile. "Be safe in your journey, Harry, please be safe."

You're falling back to me,

The star that I can't see.

I know you're out there,

Somewhere out there.

Oh, you're falling out of reach,

Defying gravity, yeah.

I know you're out there,

Somewhere out there.

You've fallen back to me,

I know, I know.

You've fallen out of reach.

I know...
