The water was freezing cold. It enveloped her, swallowing her whole, filling her nose and mouth as she screamed out for help. A strong hand held her below the water's surface as she thrashed around for help. The water filled her lungs and her body began to relax.
Eventually, she stopped fighting. She knew she was going to die anyway, and to fight would be useless. She had told her sister, but as people usually are about such situations, her sister didn't believe her.
"I'm going to die," she said in a worried voice. "I saw it."
Her sister lifted a skeptical eyebrow. "Don't be ridiculous," her sister replied. "You look like you're in perfect shape."
"That's not what I mean," she said, growing agitated. "I know something they don't want me to know."
"Like what?" her sister asked, still not sounding at all convinced.
"I can't tell you. It would make the situation worse, and I don't want you in danger."
Her sister was becoming angry now. "You just want attention," she snapped. "Stop it."
"Believe me." She had tears in her eyes, but her sister had already turned away.
She looked up with wide and haunted eyes, as the smirking face of Peter Pettigrew gazed down at her. She closed her eyes and drifted downward, surrendering herself to Death. Visions of her last moments danced behind her eyelids.
She had been walking, taking a short stroll around the nearly frozen over lake when it happened. There was a rustling coming from the Forbidden Forest, and she turned to see whom it was.
"Hello?" she called, stopping to listen more carefully. "Who's there?"
There was no answer. Shrugging her shoulders, she began walking again. Snow was falling lightly, landing on her eyelashes and melting. Christmas was coming, and she felt sad to know she wouldn't be a part of it this year. She happened to glance down at the thin sheen of ice covering the lake, and was surprised to see the outline of a person standing a few feet behind her. Thinking it was a fellow Hogwarts student joining her for a walk, she turned to greet them.
Upon seeing Peter Pettigrew, she grimaced. "I should've known it was you," she said resignedly. Her fate was here, even if it was sooner than she had anticipated.
He was happy to see she wasn't going to fight, and he wasted no time in pushing her toward the lake.
She gasped as she felt her body crashing through the thin layer of ice, and into the freezing depths below. She knew fighting was hopeless, but her body thought otherwise. Her arms thrashed, trying to pull her head above the water for the oxygen her lungs screamed for, but her mind remained calm.
"You should have kept your visions to yourself," Pettigrew murmured, watching her as her body stopped flailing about.
The last thing she felt was Pettigrew's hand lifting from the top of her head...and then the life left her.
