Remus sat very still for a long time. He and Sirius had been talking for a while in the Death Chamber.
"What's it like in there?"
"Not much different than Azkaban in certain ways. Cold. Empty. Dozens of souls or something left over from the Unspeakables' old experiments. The only difference I can tell is my happy thoughts don't help. If anything, I feel worse. It's terrifying. People who are truly dead just wander aimlessly. I can't speak to them. I don't belong here; you know it as well as I do, Remus. I've been trying to find my way out. Looking for the way back through the veil. I can't find it."
Remus felt a strong pulsing breeze that emanated from the veil. It echoed of running footsteps.
"It should be right here. But... there's nothingness. I don't remember how I landed when I fell through, and there's no definite floor, or walls. I think the only reason I can stand upright is because I think gravity still has control over me. The dead don't seem to follow these same rules. They walk or float through the walls and the floor. One day I saw a pair of feet walking in the middle of the air with the rest of their body upended and out of sight. I'm freezing cold, and starving. But these are the least of my worries.
"There's simply nothing here, at all. Except for the dead. They are silent most of the time, but every once in a while, one screams madly and runs about like a decapitated chicken. Then, the guards come," Sirius's voice quieted and the wind died down.
"The dementors would be a welcome change. The guards take away the screaming one. As soon as they appear, the wandering stops. The dead form a half-circle around the screamer, and stare at the guards. The guards swarm the screaming one, surround him so tightly, then disperse. The dead go back to wandering and all that is left of the screaming one resembles an owl pellet. I tried to talk to one of the guards once. It ignored me. I manhandled one to get its attention. It was like it was made of smoke or water."
"Have you had contact with any of the Unspeakables?"
"I can hear them. They talk all the time about me. They have no idea what it's like or how to get me out, or even if there is a way. They read aloud documents of the old experiments with dead things. Plants, insects, animals, even people, eventually. They say their predecessors never exactly got it right. They keep repeating something about the portal being open for only 10 seconds after they throw something in. But they won't try it again. I reckon I'm stuck in here."
"There he is." Arthur Weasley's voice sounded muted and distant.
"Good-bye, Remus." A final jet breezed by Remus's ear. "Take care of them for me until I get back."
"See you, Sirius. We'll find a way to get you out," Remus whispered as two Ministry workers lifted Remus off the ground and dragged him out of the Death Chamber.
