Chapter 4: Memory Loss

James stood outside the bathroom door in the train as Alaina threw up. His arms were folded across his chest and he winced every time he heard her vomit.

He heard running water and a flush a few minutes later. Then Alaina came back, looking dead. Her skin was a yellowish color, her cheeks were puffy, and her eyes were red and puffy. Mascara lines ran down her cheeks. But even though she looked like shit, James thought she looked more normal than he'd ever seen her.

The whole time he had known her she had always looked like a Barbie. With her make up all gone and her hair a mess and her clothes a mess, she looked beautiful.

"All better," James asked.

She grunted and began walking. After taking only a few steps, her knees fell and she landed on her chest. James sighed and picked her up.

Alaina rested her head against his shoulder and fell asleep. James carried her to his compartment and laid her down on one side. For the rest of the trip to Hogwarts, he watched her sleep and sketched pictures of her sleeping.

She wrote in the diary when she felt alone, when nobody was around to confine in. Tom was there. Tom listened. Tom consoled her, and knew exactly what to say to make her feel better. He was a better friend than Alaina had ever had.

Tom, nobody gets me like you do.

Well, little Alaina, that's what here for.

It's just so weird. I've been talking to you for a long time and I feel like I know you, even though I've never seen you.

I'm closer than you think, my dear.

What do you mean?

We could meet right now, if you like. I can tell you where I am.

Okay.

The girl's loo on the second floor. There's a ghost in there that is always wailing. Ignore her. Don't mention my name at all, Alaina. Go to the sinks, look for the one that has a black snake on it. You'll know what to do when you're there.

I can be there in five minutes.

Good girl, Alaina. Good girl.

Where was she? All she could see was water and statues. Then at the end, she saw a figure standing there.

Tom, she thought.

Come to me, Alaina, a voice in her head said. Come to me.

She started running. When she got closer to Tom, he was the hottest thing she had ever seen in her life. His whole appearance was perfect.

"I knew you would come," he whispered, stepping closer to her.

"I said I would," Alaina said, backing closer to the wall. He closed the space between them. "I wanted - no needed - to see you.""

"You'd say we're pretty close, wouldn't you?" His started stroking her cheek.

Alaina gulped and nodded. "I'd say we are," she whispered, wanting him to touch her more.

"Well I would say it's time to get closer," he whispered before crushing her lips with his.

When Alaina woke up, she didn't remember anything. All she remembered was kissing Tom then just waking up. She picked up her diary and began to write.

What happened? she wrote.

What do you mean, Alaina? he wrote back.

I don't remember anything. All I remember is seeing you and um...kissing you then waking up. That's all. What happened to me?

Oh Alaina, it's probably just stress. You probably fell asleep, had a dream about me, and then woke up. Maybe that's why you don't remember anything.

Yeah. You're probably right. But it was so bizarre. You told me you were in Hogwarts. That I could just go down to the girl's loo on the second floor, find a snake on one of the snakes, then say something and then I would be in some place. It's was so weird.

It was just a dream, Alaina. Don't worry about it. It didn't mean anything.

But why would I have a dream about kissing you? I don't even know what you look like - although in my dream I saw you.

You're a teenage girl, Alaina. Your hormones are raging. Trust me, I had the same kind of dreams when I was your age.

How old are you anyways?

Oh, about eighteen.

Then why do you sound so old?

Pardon me?

'I had the same kind of dreams when I was your age.' You sound like your seventy.

Maybe because my life seems longer than it really is.

Oh.

You should probably go now. You have class, remember?

Alaina looked over at her clock and swore. She slammed the diary and ran to get ready. She was already late as it was, but she would not leave looking like she just woke up.

Tom smirked to nobody in particular. Everything was going as planned. He would make this girl fall for him just like he had made little Ginny Weasley - this girl's mother. Then he would use it to get what he wanted - total rule of the world.
